Manchester City Early Favorites To Sign Shay Given

It certainly looks like Shay Given has had enough of all the promises made by Newcastle management over the last 11 years, and the club still hasn’t won anything for 40 years, and we don’t think we’re anywhere near to changing that statistic – at least anytime soon.

Shay Given – down and out at Newcastle

The betting on where Given will end up has Manchester City at 3-2 favorites, and we think the reason for that is that a silly money bid is expected from them for Given. Let’s rephrase that – we hope a silly money bid will be made from them for Shay.

We’re fairly sure Shay is already almost out of the club, so if we are indeed to lose him, it’s then in the club’s best interests to get some decent money for the world class goalkeeper, who still has plenty of years left at the top level.

And we can presumably start rebuilding the squad with that money – presumably.

Newcastle could do worse than trying to get Manchester City’s current 6’3” goalkeeper, 21 year old Joe Hart in part exchange from the Eastlands club.

Joe’s a very good goalkeeper now, and already has Premier League experience, and at only 21 years old will only get better as he matures.

Joe’s already in the full England squad, and probably the best young English goalkeeper around at the moment.

Another good goalkeeper we could pursue is Manchester United’s 25 year-old Ben Foster, another good young English goalkeeper, who has one cap for England so far, and seems lost at Manchester United, yet has significant experience after playing for Watford on loan for a couple of seasons.

Online betting company Paddy Power has Arsenal and Tottenham at both 7/2 with former club Sunderland 25/1 outsiders.

Here’s the latest betting on where Shay will end up.

Manchester City 3/2
Newcastle 9/4
Arsenal 7/2
Tottenham 7/2
Sunderland 25/1

No need for GK’s exchange Ed,we have more than enough in that department.

Straight swap with Jo i’d say…you never know,it might work.

Given doesn’t deserve Newcastle, and I mean that in the positive sense. He doesn’t deserve constant turmoil, a lack of cash, a ridiculous owner, players most of whom would rather be elsewhere, more managers than you could shake a stick at – none of whom are up to much (except maybe Sam, otherwise decent, who couldn’t cope with the Newcastle chaos), horrible jerseys [;-)], ugly, ugly colleagues, and the prospect of an equally dismal or worse future. If he can get into Arsenal then he should go, otherwise his options are unappealing: Tottenham and City are the NUFC of London and Manchester respectively.

As someone has already said, a substantial bid for an ageing player, when we have a good replacement already in place, would have to be seriously considered. Dont get me wrong, i am well aware of the value of Given, but to be fair to him, he has served NUFC well and if he wanted to go i couldnt blame him …
Havent been on here for a while and sadly people still banging on about how bad MA is for the club – which im still not convinced about .. this story about Given serves to remind how s hite it has been for a long time .. MA inherited the problem of MOwen, inherited NButt as the lynchpin of the team despite being way too old and his replacement JBarton being in jail to name just a few major issues …. If you consider the purchases MA has made, you have to give him credit – Gutherie / Bassong / Collicini / Guiterrez .. i dont really see how people can complain .. economy is in financial meltdown and sadly we have been so poorly run in the past that we are going to suffer .. getting on MA case wont help – you cant expect him to shoulder the cost of us having brain dead chairmen in his position before him … I like JFK and he is probs the best we are going to get at the moment but he is not the stuff of dreams and i dont see him making world class players … reckon people shud just stick to supporting the club and everyone involved as best they can as any criticism is just going to compound an already treacherous situation ….

    We’re two points above relegation.

Is now the time to be getting goalkeepers “for the future” ????
If we take citys goalie for Given we’re just making our side worse.

Whats worrying is that Harper hasnt signed a new contract yet either & Krul is unproven in the prem.

Not sure this situation is as simple as it seems.

I think he will end up at City..they have got plenty of dough to build a good squad and I expect them to spend loads this window..any guesses how much city will spend in this window? I am thinking around 80-90million.

Wonder how much we will spend…really undecided.

He will probably go to Man City….

According to reports Arsenal are on the verge of signing Arshavin for somewhere around 13 mill. so they may not have enough funds to sign him.
Tottenham only recently signed Gomez from PSV, so they may not want a new keeper.

Hopefully City will pay 12-15 mill. for Shay and hopefully Ashley will allocate all these funds for expanding our squad.

    We need it badly….. 🙁

Wenger has come out and said he isn’t interested in a keeper which leaves man city the likely destination. I can’t see how Spurs would be much of an improvement. It’s strange though that
Sky Sports are still running with the headline that we aren’t interested in selling, however knowing Ashley as well as we do that could mean the opposite.

Agreed toonpipes! Lets just see what happens, Granted we have some major issues but these have been inherited by Mike and not created by him. Although, i’d have not let Mike Owen run his contract down, i’d have him signed up or shipped out pronto. Lets just wait and see what happens, Shay might not leave! we might buy some good players and push up the league! lets just wait and see before calling for peoples heads.

Realism question – what if no one wants to sign for the toon? Follow me on this one.

I have read alot of use money to buy x y and z but that all depends on who would want to come to us.

Realsitically I would think that we would be attractive to Championship players, bench warmers and reserve players or someone who can look at NUFC and find it a chance to make a name for themselves.

This is my train of thought at the moment and seems to get backed up by every article I read at the minute.

Its one thing after another with NUFC.

Do you think we are cursed? Get an exorcist to exorcide those demons and perform a blessing on the pitch, dressing room, dug out, board room, managers office, treatment room, kit room etc etc.

That last one was a joke-well sort of!

If he goes then its bad news, but not a tradegy. Harper is world class and would be good for the england squad as well for him to be playing regulary. He deserves to be frist choice if given goes.

Although i like what Ed has said about Hart, or Foster as they are both young dependable British keepers.

I recon joe’s convinced Shay to stay till the end of the season and re-think his position then. If joe refuses to let shay leave I recon he’ll just get down and play, he obviously loves the club and I doubt he’d do a berba and sulk till he gets his dream move.

    Morons sticking up for Ashley

You can bang on and on about him “inheriting” the issues. A good Owner DOES SOME ABOUT THEM. Thats the whole point.

Ashley has NOT cleared our debt. He has NOT strengthened our side, he has let our GREATEST CHANCE at having a decent manager go because of some dissagreement with an idiot lawyer. He has also basically made it known before that our entire side is for sale.

If Givens statement should show you anything, its that he does NOT see a good future for Newcastle. This comes AFTER Ashley announcing he was staying on ffs.

Use ya brains. You think the players like Ashley???

Hes done nothing beneficial for us ATALL. I live in hope that he will improve our situation this time & i do not want him out……stability is sadly the best option we have right now.

But claiming none of this is to do with him is completely idiotic.

Man City are a moneybags owned club. They are also equal to us on points and as much going to challenge for honours as us. So why would Shay go there? So, is it becoming a case of just getting out of toon? We have Harper who, as our regular keeper, could challenge for England caps. And I would make him club captain too!

This is probably Newcastle’s lowest point in this decade.

First of all, although our squad is thin, we should offload some players as they are a liability to us.

    1. Cacapa
    2. Smith
    3. Viduka
    4. Geremi
    5. Nancho (who is this guy anyway)
    6. Butt
    7. Owen (Yes, Owen)

With these players out of the way, we can invest in better quality players and draft in our youngsters such as Nile Ranger.

Players I should highly recommend we sign.

    1. Kolo Toure (I hear he wants to leave)
    2. Santa Cruz
    3. Upson (Leftback and Centreback)
    4. Scott Parker (Yes! bring him back! to replace Butt so that Barton can run around)
    5. Faye (Bring him back too! He can play DM and Centreback!)
    6. Defoe (I hear he is available at the right price)

Also, I think as long as Taylor does not play as centreback, we’ll do fine. Taylor in rightback seems reliable.

We should really start to build a rock solid defence around Bassong. As long as we don’t concede, the probability of us winning is higher! Look at how Portsmouth climbed the table last season and even won the FA Cup! they had a four rubgy-like players in front of the keeper with Papa Dioup and Diara covering the Centrebacks!

    Please! Kinnear! Listen to me!

Why don’t you go to a Villa blog and explain to them why he is a good player because he is already being slated on their blogs. So it is not just US who feels he cant beat a man and cross.

Have we got the ambition TM……don’t think so.
