While Kinnear Thinks Top Six – Given Thinks Goodbye

Newcastle United manager Joe Kinnear still believes the club are capable of a good finish in the Premier League’s top six.

Joe Kinnear – will probably be losing Given and Owen

But wherever we finish this season, it looks like the two defeats over the holiday period, 2-1 at Wigan and 5-1 at home to Liverpool, may have cost the club big time.

Because not only do we look to be losing Michael Owen in the summer, but it could well be that Shay Given leaves the club in January.

Shay’s lawyer Michael Kennedy, has come out today and said his player is considering his future at the club, after serious interest has been expressed by Arsenal, Manchester City and Spurs.

This will encourage all 3 clubs to bid for the player in January, and Manchester City may come in with a large bid, given their tendency to overpay for players.

It looks like the Eastlands club will sign Wayne Bridge today from Chelsea for £12M, but who in their right mind believes he’s worth that much? Only Manchester City we think.

Joe Kinnear has a contract until the end of the season and the only way to keep Given and Owen at the club is to get Newcastle up the league quickly with a decent run of wins, and get some stability back at the club.

The appointment of Chris Mort as Chairman will go a long way towards that, although the club look to be losing some of their best players because of the catastrophic way the club has been run over the last 6 months.

But it may be all too late for Given, who we now expect to be transferred, probably to Arsenal, before the end of the month, which will end eleven and a half years at the club for Shay.

Joe Kinnear is in a difficult position but that’s nothing knew to Joe at Newcastle and he is still upbeat as he told the Daily Mirror today:

“What price a flutter on us reaching the top six?”

“I am proud of what we have achieved so far and I feel we can build on it.”

“I am only looking ahead and only looking upwards, and I think we can get a respectable finish because this division is so close.”

Joe has yet to comment on the sad news today regarding Shay Given, and only yesterday Joe assured Newcastle fans that Given did not want to leave Newcastle.

We think Joe will need to comment on the situation relating to Shay sometime today – because the Irishman could be out of the door very quickly, because Manchester City, Arsenal and Spurs will all be in a frenzy to get him, that’s for sure.

Comments welcome.

Can’t see him going to Arsenal as they apparently don’t have much to spend, Man City will outbid them probably.

Shay will be gone within days. Man City, if there interest is genuine, seem to be moving very fast and decisively. It’d suit us to make any sales as early as possible, so that we can make the best use of the money we receive. I can see us selling Shay to Man City or Arsenal – probably Man City due to the amount of cash they’ll throw into the ring – within days.

As for whether we’ll get anywhere near to the top 6, I doubt it, but it depends on what signings we make over the transfer window. Five or six (or more) clever signings, like those we made in the summer (ignoring Xisco and the other guy), funded by a bit of money from the club along with the sales of Given, Owen and/or N’Zogbia and we could see a vastly improved squad.

At the risk of running the mob – the loss of Given would not be the end of the world – we have good cover, he is getting near the end of his career and 15million could be put to better use on strengthening the squad – however the money must be used for the team and not Ashleys pockets. If the money (including that of Milner, season tickets and AShleys 20milion a year ) are not made available we are stuffed.

As for money grabber ExEMO, he should at least allow us to get some money for him and go to italy – cant see it happening as he is intent on walking for free and getting a huge signing on bonus.

jfk is a total idiot and is either a liar or does not know what his own team are thinking cos every time he says one is staying, the player pops up and says he is leaving. i fully expect ALL of our good players to be slapping transfer requests. it is inevitable. martins will be gone soon too, i see that blackburn want joey barton too. its all gone to shit. ashley needs to signal his intent NOW by spending big and showing his completley current disalusioned team that he does have ambition and heart. Instead of spending 20 million quid on a new family pad in dubai he should put his football club in order first – its in total melt down.
I think we will not be able to even attract any good players now anyway, would you come to newcastle – we are a shambles! any fan that still pops up now and says chill out, or give ashley time is a wanker – he’s had chill and he’s had time. it just gets worse. i am 100% certain we will go down this season, we deserve to as no other club i can think of in the prem is ran in this pathetic shambolic way.

I can’t work out whether Kinnear is stupid or he thinks were stupid!

    Top 6? Honestly.

On the Given subject if this happened to any other club there would be a statement on the club website confirming or deying the story and stating the clubs position regarding this situation.

Are the people who run the club so far up their own ars8s that they can’t see TV or papers!

I can understand Arsenal, but City? and even worse SPURS!!!!?. Those clubs are not only below us in the laegue, but they also have far worse defenses than we have… If he wants to move to any of those clubs, then let him, it will only cause him more grief and we get a chance to get young Krul more involved, so the loss might turn out to be a good thing in the end.

GraemeR, totally agree. Almost any team would miss a player like Given, he’s top class. However Harper will be almost as good and can finally push for an England spot. He in turn will have the likes of Krul, Forster and Soderberg pushing him.

The money in turn will go to good use bringing in new players, which we desperately need.

However we must sell Owen – the idea of keeping him and getting him to sign a new contract are pretty much ridiculous.

ARSENAL- dont offer the over 30s longer than a year
    SPURS- fellow unachievers,like ourselves
MAN CITEH- far from finished product, i yhink this massive job is above hughes’ station…
Do these look like good options shay?? i agree with most that shay deserves a big chance cuz he does, but all 3 clubs linked have had their problems this season…arsenal have had problems in changing room and may even struggle to get champs league…. i feel shay should maybe stay till summer with owen, see where we are then although i think thats wishful thinking and something he’s probably heard before.

everyone on here knows i am a fan of owen but i think we should choose martins over him for every game now, owen is leaving, we should focus on keeping martins happy nad retaining his services – if possible. owen represents the past and we need to look the big picture now. we should try to sell owen in jan if possible. what is the point of keeping him now. its a shame but the whole thing is fcuked.

I don’t think we are destroyed..come on lads we will hardly miss Given..Harper is well up for it and so is young Tim Krul.

If we can get 12m for Given and the money is reinvested in this window I don’t mind if he goes so adding that to 12m for Milner that should be 22m in the kitty…or should I say the casino owners back pocket : )

Owen is not going to try 100% as he does not want to get injured and risk his big pay off – whilst he is a class player he is a mercenary – be a shame if he picked up another long term injury and was out of contract in June with no club wanting him lolololololol

    Craig – get a grip.

Wait until the end of the transfer window. When we’ve lost a load of players and bought nowt but a new door for the club shop, then feel free to loose your grip in spectacular fashion; I’ll be doing the same.

Until then, let’s just see what happens. Given’s timing may utterly suck and has hardly helped things, but this is the first real day of the transfer window. If we get just 3 key players in (perm or loan) then top six isn’t impossible.

Lads I was well known for being really negative towards Ashley soon after the takeover when the penny pinching started.

Since he took over the spending has been dire to say the least.

He is not daft and must know now that the only way to get the fans back onside is to spend and I think he will do that..If he doesn’t then I will go mental.

Last chance saloon for Mike and he knows it.

so anyone who thinks by selling given and owen whoever will be good for our club, fat hope!

fat ashley desn’t know what he’s doing.

To be fair, JK never actually said we’d finish top 6 – I think he’s just trying to sound positive.

As to Shay, he’s served us well for 11 years and I’d wish him well wherever he ends up.

It would be a shame to lose him but it’s perfectly understandable for a player of his stature given the nonsense that’s gone on at NUFC since the 1st KK era and the inadequacies of our current owner.

It’s a real shame if Given feels it’s time to go – he can hardly be blamed, after 11 years with us, an incredible number of appearances, and most years spent with a poor defence in front of him we should appreciate his efforts and thank our luckly stars that we have decent cover in that area of the team….however, over to the board and Kinnear now to deliver us a transfer window that gives us some optimism – another window like the last two will see us in a bit of a battle to stay up I think!!! 5 players in minimum if you ask me.
