Newcastle at least got over their defensive hangover from last Sunday and did well to keep a clean sheet against Hull City in a game which at the end could have either way, but Newcastle were denied an obvious penalty just after the break.
Newcastle will argue they should have had a rather obvious penalty after Michael Owen was clattered by goalkeeper Duke, after the goalkeeper hade made a bad error.
Duke had kicked the ball directly up in the air just after half time, and when Owen got to the loose ball first, the Hull City goalkeeper simply brought Owen down – an obvious penalty.
But amazingly referee Chris Foy waved play on, and you have to wonder what the referee was thinking.
In a first half where Newcastle had the better chances Andy Carroll went close after 21 minutes but was denied his first goal for the club by a good save from goalkeeper Duke.
But either side could have won it at the end with Jonas Gutierrez who started the game on the bench but was brought on in the first half for the injured N’Zogbia. Jonas had a good game down the left hand side in the second half and could have won it for the Magpies near the end.
Then on 71 minutes Geovanni had a free kick on the edge of the area and the Brazilian and brought a good save from Shay Given, who had another good game in goal for Newcastle.
Only moments later Hull City went close again when Turner’s header from a corner hit the inside of the post and appeared to cross the line before Given claimed it, but the referee ruled otherwise.
Then Newcastle went close when Gutierrez cut inside Doyle and fired towards goal, but McShane deflected the shot into the side netting. McShane is on Sunderland’s books of course, and it looks like he will be recalled to Sunderland for the rest of the season.
All in all this was a decent performance from Newcastle, following last weekend’s disaster, and the defense must be happy with another clean sheet – Bassong must be back in the team. 😀
The two teams will have to fight it out again at St. James’ Park, although we’re not sure of the replay date yet. Both teams still get to be in the pot for the 4th round draw tomorrow, and most Newcastle fans will be satisfied with that.
But Joe Kinnear will no doubt question again why these referees make such a hash of things at times

Stuart – It isn’t a site that has been cobbled together, it’s been regularly updated by an economist who is also a long time season ticket holder at SJP, the link to the site was available on nufc.com for years but was taken down after Ashley bought the club because results were not available anymore.

Comment #83Willie, I’ve found the bit about the 30m, but it does seem if we lost 28m in 8 years then 30m in 1 year there is a bit more to it than is shown here. Possibly something to do with writing off assets in the sale process?
Either way, if Ashley didn’t know about that then it doesn’t exactly help his credibility.

Comment #85People seem to be criticising JK for being too loyal to players like Butt, Owen etc – and he might be loyal to Smith too when he’s fit – I don’t know. But every manager we’ve had in recent years – including KK – have been the same.
Most of the time I like Owen, but generally speaking I’d like whoever is in charge to let go of the rusty reigns and be a little bolder – if we can get into a more comfortable league position where we could afford to do so! Maybe phase in Lua Lua for example, or buy a player like Sissoko for the first team.

Ashley has made 2 mistakes in his time at the toon.
1 never done due diligence.
2 Appoint Kevin Keegan. Its was a recipe for disaster under the structure Ashley wanted.

I would rather see an official site.
If we look back at the Hall & Shepard running of the club, the team faired far better.
Yes we had some debt re the mortgage, but I don’t class my mortgage as debt. Debt on players is another situation, but getting into europe most seasons covered that along with Sky wanting to show us more.
I’m not going to defend those 2 no end as I think John Halls son & Shepard made some terrible mistakes, but there you had fans running the club wanting the best for the club, but yes taking as much money as possible out of it in the process. Now we have a buisness man running the club who wants to take as much out as possible (understandble) but doesn’t really care about what goes back into the team. He bought the club to be used as a cash cow, failed there so far and now will hope we dont go down so he can maybe sell later and get as much from the players as possible

Comment #89I worry we could be in another Roeder situation with Kinnear.
I am a fan of his and if we survive we owe him alot!
He has pulled us out the mire, no doubt and offers alot to football.
However i just worry as a manager he may be limited.
Just like Reoder, he deserves his chance. But just like Reoder are we being short – sighted?
Its difficult, Joe deserves his chance this season, but come the summer do we start again or stick with Joe? Particularly when there may be quality managers about like Mark Hughes !!
I’m being a bit hard on the guy, but i only want the best for Newcastle United.

Comment #90i think we played poor really. our strikers are not good enough. Ameobi, Viduka and Smith are crap, owen will leave. We have Oba and Xisco left. Carrol played ok today, he’s still 19 and didn’ get a proper chance so far. but why on earth jfk doesn’t even mention Xisco. I mean… his goal per game average looked impressive for deportivo. MAn…I hate this guy joe, he doesn’t want to play youngsters and he keeps playing that useless **** Butt. why didn’ t he make any substitutions. I can’t wait for summer, hopefully this guy kinnear will leave and we will get a real manager.

Comment #92Owen denied a penalty, aye.
But he was shocking, he could and should have won us the game on a number of occasions. I’m speechless that people keep defending him, keep saying that he’s as good as he was, he is a shadow of his shadow of himself.
Given proved yet again why the wee lad is one of the most important players in our squad. He had a moment where maybe his mind was somewhere else, but other then that you would swear that everything that had happened over the past few days didn’t happen at all. Consistant best as per usual.
We should have won, wasted chance us cost us the win, typical Given and a solid enough defence..ish. Meant we kept it 0-0. Another clean sheet, maybe that, and the crowd who kept cheering his name through out, cheered wee Given up.

Comment #93Waddle, failure to do due dilligence is a pretty basic failure on such a large transaction, particularly when the debt could be pretty much calculated from publicly published accounts – 30 minute job.
I agree that for what he had in mind then Keegan was absolutely the wrong appointment, but you also need to add disastrous lack of communications with both players and fans, a series of public relations disasters, failure to deal with player’s contracts, appointment of several senior staff with no qualifications for the positions to which they were appointed …

Comment #96The thing is Driver Shepherd was doing a decent job up until 2003, they were robbing the club through dividends but the finances were pretty good, the problems started happening after we were in the CL as he started handing out big contract to players, if you click on PAYROLL it will show you how our wages have increased over the years.
The problem was made worse with all of the money he gave Souness, he borrowed against everything including the stadium and the training ground, we were that much of a risk that we couldn’t even get a bankers note to sign Owen to say we were good for the money, the only way we could afford him was to take out an overdraft with our account with Northern Rock at 8% interest which is how we’ve spent all of the sponsorship money before we even got it.
Ashley’s mistake was not looking at the books properly first, I’m happy he didn’t though because if e didn’t buy us then we would be in a position like West Ham and Portsmouth are facing.

Comment #105disorder – the trouble is Enrique needs still to learn more. He needs competition for his place, preferably with an experienced LB, not someone of the quality of N’Zog!
As a side note, he has improved a wee bit since he came here, but this is different football than they play in spain. I also think he will come good in time, trouble is we dont have any spare at the moment. (time that is)

Comment #106Ashley had to pay the mortgage off because it was gauranteed by SJH. He wouldn’t paid it off if he didn’t have to.
The other debt that we had accumulated Ashley lent the club the money pay it off. We still hav to pay that money back. He says interest free but I don’t think so.
Ashley has the worst reputation in the city it’s untrue!
He never does anything for nothing.
Can anyone explain why he bought a football club and didn’t intend to invest any money in it. No one forced him to buy the club.
It’s quite clear that 4 transfer windows in he has not bought the club to take it forward spending his money. No other way of doing it i’m afraid.
Man U, Liverpool, Chelsea, Arsenal all are heavily in debt due to player purchases ect…
There isn’t a successful club in the world that isn’t in debt.
What would you rather be?
A ridiculous laughin stock who is never gonna win anything or a successful football club/team winning regular trophies and be a bit in debt that can be serviced through the success?
I know what i’d rather have!

Comment #111Stuart – He didn’t lend it the club to pay him back, he paid it off and now it’s equity, even Keith Harris has said that.
Unless you think a club is worth £150m with £100m of debt, yet you pay the debt off and the club is still only worth £150m.

Comment #112You forget Lew, this is a club more than 1 million supporters.
We would have thousands on a waiting list for tickets if we were successful, CL money, more merchandise sold and more TV money.
We more than most of the clubs could well be self sufficient if successful and would therefore be in a position to service such debt.

Comment #114Spyro that is so weird JK was quoted as saying we have gone after him Today
Newcastle United boss Joe Kinnear has confirmed Scotland and Rangers midfielder Barry Ferguson is one of the men on his transfer window wishlist.
The Magpies have made an inquiry about the 30-year-old, who underwent ankle surgery last year, as Kinnear attempts to bolster his depleted squad for a Premier League survival fight.
Kinnear, who admits he may have to sell before he can buy, said: ”I have enquired about Ferguson, but we will wait and see what the outcome of that is.
”We are finding it difficult to bring certain players from clubs. Our bids haven’t been accepted so far.
”The problem is two or three clubs are in for the same players. At the moment, there could be teams bidding more than us.
”It would help if I could move some of the players here and get the finances in that way. But we have had no bids for them.”
Newcastle have also been linked with Ferguson’s team-mate at Ibrox, Algerian defender Madjid Bougherra.
Kinnear admitted on Friday he is targeting at least five additions this month, perhaps some of them on loan, to cover the deficiencies of a squad which prepared for today’s FA Cup third-round trip to Hull with 10 injuries, six of them long-term.
However, he did so having to fend off reports that unsettled goalkeeper Shay Given may be sold after growing frustrated with the club’s plight following more than 11 years on Tyneside.
In addition, skipper Michael Owen has insisted he will not make a decision on his future until the end of the season, while Nicky Butt, Shola Ameobi and Steve Harper are still haggling over terms.
Kinnear said: ”The January transfer window is hardly ideal. ‘We have a lot of players missing at the moment who are out for six weeks or more.
”That means it’s tough. If we pick up more injuries, we are in trouble for West Ham next week. ‘We really need to get some bodies in. We need versatile players in who can play in a number of positions.
”We have got injuries all over the pitch. But we have to grin and bare it.”

Ashley said so himself in his rare interview with the club magazine in August.
He said I don’t want interest paid on the money i’ve lent to the club?
Anyhow, he hasn’t invested any of his own money in the playing squad, we can agree on that surely?

Comment #119Things just don’t seem right about this Ferguson interest. WHY get rid of Geremi and bring in Ferguson who are of a similar age and apart from that Geremi has years of experience in the EPL where as BF only has three and he was injured for most of that. Just doesn’t make sense.Spyro you have something there mate it MUST be a smoke screen. Or JFK could be playing tricks knowing the toon fans would NOT want Ferguson so anything else that came in would look better. Lower our expectations and then bring in someone slightly better so we think its a WOW signing.
