Sebastien Bassong was back in the Newcastle defense today and the Newcastle team played well in the first half at KC Stadium and are a little unfortunate not to be ahead at the break.
The Newcastle side started off very brightly with Carroll prominent in attack, and it wasn’t long before Andy was combining well with captain Michael Owen after 5 minutes, and Owen’s cross was hit towards goal by the Geordie striker but goalkeeper Matt Duke made a decent save low to his left.
Then on 9 minutes Butt lost the ball to Geovanni in the middle of the park, and Geovanni tested keeper Shay Given with a good dipping shot from 20 yards out. Shay had to parry the shot before Taylor cleared the danger.
Then on 13 minutes Owen almost scored, as Guthrie teed up the striker, but his shot was blocked by Ricketts at the expense of a corner. That was very close for Newcastle, who started the game much more alive than Hull City.
Then Andy Carroll almost scored his first senior goal for the club, but goalkeeper Duke produced another good one-handed save to keep the ball out. Andy is looking dangerous up front for the Magpies.
On 36 minutes it looks like Newcastle have sustained yet another injury as Charles N’Zogbia limped off and is replaced by Argentine Gutierrez. 🙁
On 39 minutes Newcastle almost conceded a goal as Craig Fagan, back in the side after breaking his leg at St. James’ Park, skipped by Butt and Taylor on the left wing, and put in a decent cross for Daniel Cousin at the near post.
Cousin prodded the ball towards the goal but Given was able to palm the ball onto the post before finally collecting it, for another great save by the Irishman.
Two minutes are played at the end of 45 minutes and the half ends with things all square, but Newcastle have played much better than last week, and with any luck could have been ahead at the interval.
Newcastle need to press on and see if they cannot get that all important first goal.
Howay The Lads!!
