HT: Hull City 0 Newcastle 0 – Magpies Looking Good

hull_city_badgenufc-crest3

Sebastien Bassong was back in the Newcastle defense today and the Newcastle team played well in the first half at KC Stadium and are a little unfortunate not to be ahead at the break.

The Newcastle side started off very brightly with Carroll prominent in attack, and it wasn’t long before Andy was combining well with captain Michael Owen after 5 minutes, and Owen’s cross was hit towards goal by the Geordie striker but goalkeeper Matt Duke made a decent save low to his left.

Then on 9 minutes Butt lost the ball to Geovanni in the middle of the park, and Geovanni tested keeper Shay Given with a good dipping shot from 20 yards out. Shay had to parry the shot before Taylor cleared the danger.

Then on 13 minutes Owen almost scored, as Guthrie teed up the striker, but his shot was blocked by Ricketts at the expense of a corner. That was very close for Newcastle, who started the game much more alive than Hull City.

Then Andy Carroll almost scored his first senior goal for the club, but goalkeeper Duke produced another good one-handed save to keep the ball out. Andy is looking dangerous up front for the Magpies.

On 36 minutes it looks like Newcastle have sustained yet another injury as Charles N’Zogbia limped off and is replaced by Argentine Gutierrez.   🙁

On 39 minutes Newcastle almost conceded a goal as Craig Fagan, back in the side after breaking his leg at St. James’ Park,  skipped by Butt and Taylor on the left wing, and put in a decent cross for Daniel Cousin at the near post.

Cousin prodded the ball towards the goal but Given was able to palm the ball onto the post before finally collecting it, for another great save by the Irishman.

Two minutes are played at the end of 45 minutes and the half ends with things all square, but Newcastle have played much better than last week, and with any luck could have been ahead at the interval.

Newcastle need to press on and see if they cannot get that all important first goal.

Howay The Lads!!

awful decision from the ref, can he spot a foul!? jonas starting to see alot of space when we’re breaking down that left flank like.
we’re starting to come forward alot more but the quality in the final third is really poor, especially the finishing!

Have to admit that we looked very good today and we almost deserved to win! But replay is ok, except that we do not need another game 🙁

Will Butt be out against West Ham? Interesting to see who will replace him! But maybe it’s a chance to prove JFK that he is absolutely useless!

Butt is horrible and does not deserve a contract extension. He is fully past it now. Owen has let us down once again and is not worthy of the praise he recieves. Carroll is just crap and the majority have known this for a while now. JK’s disregard for Xisco has cost us.

Better second half, pity we didn’t have 2 strikers on the pitch-someone pass to Owen. He has to come back to midfield to get a touch FFS.

    Well done Bassong & Enrique.
Duff & Jonas got going in the 2nd.

    The ref was a tw@.

Its all back to ours then.

Butt is a missing player for us, its like we’re playing every game with 10 men.

Guthries shattered by half time because Butt doesnt move.

Carroll wasted his first team chance.

Overall i reckon if we replaced Butt with a good Attacking central midfielder we’d have a decent side. He lets it all down in the centre & Guti has to learn to run at defenders like that in every game.
He only did it once he got aggravated by that foul.

Both sides have decent chances and scary moments but in general I thought we are quite even out. Carroll looks raw given his inexperience and Colo was losing some aerial battles with Cousin.

Butt nearly cost us dearly when he lost possession and I must say his performance isn’t up to par. Too slow for my liking. Else everything is ok and Bassong makes the defence stable again.

Didn’t think it was a great performance to be honest. We just lack quality all over, really. Didn’t like the look of Owen and Carrol up front either. Maybe it would be best if Owen did actually leave. Don’t think we know how to use him in our team. Would like to have seen Xisco get a run up front, especially in front of Carrol. But maybe JFK kept him on the bench so he could sell him.

    Not getting too carried away.

Yes we were the better side, just!
But it was against Hull’s reserves!

    We were poor up front.
Thought Owen wasnt at his sharpest and Carroll should have taken his chance with both hands, for me i saw nothing in him i dont know already.

Getting frustrated with Joe not giving Xsico a shot, can only think hes protecting him from injury, now the windows open!

Defence was better, had to be really.
    Bassong excellent as always.

Over all an average performance and a tentative step in rebuilding our confidence.

Bright side, the defence and were still in the hat.

I am just happy that Bassong didn’t look rusty. He is immense. The whole defence done well today apart from the odd long ball over the top, which no one apart from Bassong can deal with.
Coloccini was awesome in one on one situations today and has shown himself to be a class defender, just a little weak in the air. Enrique was superb in the second half and Taylor looks a good RB. This should be his normal position. Given was impressive when called upon. Guthrie is class but we need to pair him with someone he can rely on. Butt just doesn’t exist anymore. Duff was good and probably our most consistent midfielder today. Gutierrez was awesome for the last 20-25minutes. Our strikers, well what can i say, they were poor and cost us today. I can’t see teams jumping at the chance to sign Owen. I agree with Mourinho, he is past it.

Ive said for a long time that jonas needs to play on the left this is his position for argentina and all the clubs he has played in he has always played there. He skins defenders on the left and is unplayable. he also links up and complements enrique well.

Carroll isnt ready for this level yet and needs to be eased into the team.. not sold! he is a young lad and very raw.
Butt again the wickest part of our team cant pass too slow rarely has the pace to get close to player to nick the ball thus he fauls alot.
