The Newcastle Journal is reporting today that Joe Kinnear has identified three of his squad who he hopes will generate around £16M in transfer funds in the January window.
Geremi – could be on his way in January
That will certainly help Joe bring in the five new additions to the squad he thinks Newcastle require to stay competitive in the Premier League for the rest of the season.
Michael Owen and Shay Given are not on that list, but we would expect Geremi and young Xisco to be two of them, since Joe never uses either player, unless he has to.
But exactly how Joe thinks they will bring in £16M is somewhat puzzling, unless he has Alan Smith down there too.
But that’s hard to imagine since Alan is not fit until the end of the month.
One of things Joe will have to guard against is not to sell any of our players until we are sure we can get replacements, so we expect the players to be sold only when we have new players at the club or lined up for definite.
New players arriving at Newcastle is not looking too positive at the moment, with clubs unwilling to sell in January, half way through the season.
Kinnear was asked if he now knew how much he would have to spend in January, and of course he shouldn’t answer that question, because it will only alert other clubs as to how much we have to spend, and they will price their players accordingly.
“I am aware of how much we have bid for players,”
“There are certain players I am trying to sell at the moment so a lot will depend on how much I get back for that.”
“There won’t be any surprise exits. None of the big boys will go but other players may, with a value of £16m for three of them.”
“It is in Dennis Wise’s quarters at the moment. He is the one wheeling and dealing, he is the one selling them.”
“We’re trying to get funds back in and he is aware of the players I want.”
We have to hope Dennis Wis is putting in long hours right now, since it seems his responsibility to both sell and buy the players, although Joe identifies who they are, which is how it should be.
We are assuming that’s the way it is now, because that’s what Joe has told us.
Let’s hope we see some action shortly in this transfer window.
