Newcastle assistant coach Chris Hughton was not surprised at the professional performance Shay Given put in yesterday at Hull City , after all of the hullabaloo that broke out on Friday over his lawyer’s statement that Shay would consider his options in January.
Shay Given – could still be on his bike in January sales
Chris has admitted that he expected nothing less than a professional performance from what he calls a top-class individual such as Shay Given.
While Shay was not Man of the Match yesterday, as some news reports would have us believe, he did put in another bevy of good saves and his steadiness was again a boon for the Toon. But it’s still an open question of whether a good offer will see move on in January.
The Ireland goalkeeper’s future has been the subject of much speculation this last week, and it erupted into almost a frenzy on Friday, with the news that Arsenal, Man City and Tottenham were interested.
A super bid from either Man City or even Tottenham, who need a goalkeeper opf Given’s class desperately, could still see the Irishman end his over 11 years stint on Tyneside.
Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has said that while he admires Given as a goalkeeper, the London club is not in the market for a goalkeeper and are not interested. They have certainly not bid the £8M for Given that has been widely reported. But just watch the continuing headlines that will link Shay with Arsenal.
After the game Hughton paid tribute to the Newcastle Number One:
“We wouldn’t expect anything less from Shay,”
“He’s a top-class individual, top-class goalkeeper and he’s been pulling out performances like that ever since I’ve known him.
“And he’s an absolutely top goalkeeper which we’ve always been aware of.”
And so this story will no doubt continue, as we await possible bids from Tottenham and Man City.
