Joe Kinnear said yesterday that Newcastle United were interested in Ranger’s captain Barry Ferguson, but the Glasgow Rangers manager today said he had received no bid or even an enquiry from the Tyneside club.
Walter Smith – no interest from Newcastle in Barry Ferguson
The Rangers manager said today:
“If the comments are accurate then it is strange,” “As far as my chairman, my chief executive and myself are concerned, there’s been no contact with Newcastle or any other club regarding Barry.”
“I have no influence over who wants to bid for any of the players at Rangers,”
“But what football manager can say that if somebody comes along and makes a bid for one of their players that they won’t consider it.”
“You have to and that is what we did with Alan Hutton and if anybody comes in then we will give them an answer, but so far the only offer we have had is for Alan Gow from Wolverhampton.”
“The players that are looking to move on are the ones who are outside of the group and are unhappy about not playing,”
“However, all I keep reading about is speculation regarding players who are playing.”
The Rangers boss admitted that if a club were to make a substantial bid for Ferguson then they would have to consider it – and it seems that Rangers need to sell some of their players in the January transfer market, perhaps top reduce the wage bill at the Scottish club.
Rangers will have certain players they would like to offload, but would presumably be tempted with any good offer for any of their players.
Newcastle have been linked with interest in both Barry Ferguson and Algerian and Rangers’ center-back Madjid Bougherra.
The 26 year old 6’2” defender only moved to Rangers last summer from Charlton Athletic for a £2M fee, but Rangers are said to want around £5M, or as much as they can get probably. 😀
It seems strange if Newcastle have not made an enquiry, although Ferguson may be further down the transfer list Newcastle have and the club may not have received answers back from their initial enquiries for players further up the list.
That’s at least one reason that would explain this.
Comments welcome.

Comment #41The truth is Kinnear has given instructions to do something i.e make an enquiry for Ferguson and it hasnt happened. We know JK hasnt got a say in who comes in anyway so who is honestly surprised. For those who say this is negative would you have all of us just be sit and apathetic and think everything will sort itself out ‘anger is an energy’ sitting and going ‘your being negative’ is acting like a fool.

Comment #47“I have enquired about Ferguson…”, is what JFK said.
If he’d said, “I’ve tabled a bid for Ferguson…”, this might be interesting.
Negative illiterates OUT!
He said there was no interest from Newcastle

Comment #48as i have said in the past the club at the minute is rotten to the core right from the top down and dont be surprised if we end up in the championship….coz that is where s**t head is leading us with basically asset stripping til he gets his money back.

Comment #49beyethegreat-There is a tiiiiny chance that Smith is lying. We could have enquired and he could just be bluntly denying it. i dont think Rangers fans would be too pleased if Barry left.
However, i think you’re probably right. one or the other. Either JK is being lied to, or he’s lying to the press. If he is lying to the press, lets hope its nothing more than a smoke screen, rather than a desperate attempt to keep fans satisfied. lets be honest, i dont think anyone wants us to spend on Barry Ferguson in January, lol

Comment #51Dan, he just said “interested”, that is not the same as making contact. I read the stories and I know a bit about gutter journalism. As usual, they were using every trick in the book to make the situation seem more than it is. Many of us fall for it hook line and sinker and turn against our own team. This constant hysteria and catastrophic mentality is our downfall.

Comment #52Does this not prove that everything Kinnear says in regards to Given, Owen, Nzogbia csn be taken with a pinch of salt. Though i believe he means what he says it has no affect upon the was Wise conducts our dealings in the transfer market. We have to remember that JK is grateful for having the job and is easier to push over than Keegan. They could sell Given, Owen, Martins and Bassong yet Kinnear would go nowhere as 4 months ago he couldnt even get a job in the championship.

Comment #53I’m still amazed at the pro Ashley fans on here. I know everybody has a right to air their views, but please can they tell me what good he has done for this once great club. If someone mentions the debt other that the mortgage, I want to see the proof that it has gone. Used to get this as a shareholder, but now we are told so many different things from the odd Ashley statement or from Harris

Have a read, Joe Kinnears quote.
“I have enquired about Ferguson, but we will wait and see what the outcome of that is.” “We are finding it difficult to bring certain players from clubs.”
The word enquired jumps out there. If it said interested then Ed wouldnt of even written this article as there would be no story at all.

There is no manager out there at any other club who comes out and says they have enquired about a player and the other club say they havent. Most instances of denial are regading paper talk however JK we make our own false headlines.

Comment #59The system under ashley has been set up from the start. Ash pays a decent wedge to Barrer boy Wise to get good players on the cheap. Ash gives him limits on spending, and minimum disposal values on all players. These values change according to Ashleys perception of the Clubs current position. JK’s input is just to say what’s needed, and who isn’t. Now thats a reasonable set up, given skill and judgement from all parties involved. Where it falls down lies with Ashleys perception and judgement. He always thinks he can beat the Market, and will never back down when the going gets tough. He is gambling with the club right now, hoping that EPL survival will buy time for the young cheap players to start making the grade.
Do not hold out any hope of saviour signings under this Guy. It is not in his policy.
All decisions affecting every aspect of the club are made by Ashley. Ultimately he will take the credit or the blame, and this to Ashley is the part he really loves. He hardly cares what anyone says, and will do things his way, because its his club.
We must continue to clench our arses until things change, one way or the other.

Comment #60The press know nowt, we know nowt about who we may be after. Remember the last window? Know one knew who we where after and where a bit suprised with Jonas, Bassong who have turned out to be very good aquisitions. Bassong in particular could be worth more than a mention, he has been imense for our defense. If we could get more players like him I would be more than pleased.

Comment #64If Joe “makes an enquiry” it means he asked asked the dwarf to look into a certain player. The dwarf being a dwarf will probably tell Joe that he has looked into the player even if he has not. Thus Joe is misled as we all are. We all know what dwarfs are. Other than Gimli son of Gloin well, frankly, you can’t trust any of therm

Yeh, enquiry means they would have contacted Rangers and asked about Fergusons availability and price. If Walter Smith didnt know about it then at least there is another club out there who a run the same way as we are.

Comment #67Yes Dan, I read the Independent today. He only said it yesterday afternoon. Enquired with who exactly? It doesn’t say, but the first person would be Ashley, not Rangers. However it has twisted this into “Joe Kinnear said that he had made an offer for Rangers captain Barry Ferguson” without any other substantiation whatsoever.

You’d be suprised mate, it seems 50% WANT him to leave and 80% dont want him as captain or in their starting 11, that is how poor he is, not to mention old and injury prone.

Comment #69Ferguson is probably not the answer, though who knows.
But, generally, does anyone else think that we could be much stronger by only adding to our central mf? We have enough attacking options for now, our defence – bar the Liverpool display – is mostly okay. We need to work on things in training, admittedly…Jose’s passing, and find someone other than Bassong who can play with Colo when we have injuries (also freeing Bass to play lb when Jose is injured, etc)
But we often look lightweight in mf and don’t seize the game there. The area in front of our defence seems to have the been the weak spot for a very, very long time…even going back to when I saw us play Barcelona is the Champions League.
If we kept all we have but could somehow add two very good mf’s – who also contribute goals – it’d be a vast difference. Admittedly, Butt to make way because Guthrie is doing fine (though may not play every game if we got the right players in).
If we had to sacrifice Given then so be it.
I’d be very happy with any 2 of Sissoko, Bullard. Johnson, Noble, Skjelbred, Diabi, Eboue etc etc. Add Barton back later on and it’s looking a much stronger side. And maybe occasionally change to 4-5-1 for games like Liverpool if we had to.
Or loan/buy another wide player and play Jonas in the middle and then just get one more central mf.

Comment #72tom_toon-you get that impression from rangers boards, forums etc? i havent had a chance to speak to many of them about it like.
as far as my mates go, they all want to keep him purely because they think morale will drop if he goes, “big barry” is a legend to them.
I see Rangers quite regularly living in scotland and my best mate being a fan like, i have no real admiration of him. He’s old and slowing down, doesnt do much. He’d be a minor improvement on Butt at best.

You would hope that like normal clubs we would have made a transfer budget and when kinnear says we have enquired about a player it actually means beginning the process of signing someone. I hope that we are not that screwed up where we have to ask ourselves twice about a player before actually going to the club with the player we want.
