The Sun is reporting today that Newcastle manager Joe Kinnear will try to sell a number of Newcastle players so he doesn’t have to sell his number one star goalkeeper Shay Given, in order to fund new players coming into the club.
Joe Kinnear – needs to sell before he can buy – why??
The Sun is reporting that Joe Kinnear will try to sell Spanish pair Xisco and Jose Enrique, who cost Newcastle a total of around £12M, and have hardly displayed that kind of class. although Xisco hasn’t even been given the opportunity.
But with owner Mike Ashley unwilling to fund any deals with up-front cash, Joe must sell some of the players he may not want, in order to get the players in he does want.
And in the January transfer window that has to be a very difficult task.
After all the hullabaloo that’s gone on at Newcastle since September, and with Mike Ashley announcing a week ago he will keep the club, we would have thought a good will gesture would have been to give Joe say £10M to £15M to get some new players in, and then he can could wheel and deal selling players after that.
It certainly doesn’t put the owner in a good light with Newcastle fans because Mike owes it to Newcastle and the club, which he almost decimated over the last few months.
£10M would allow Joe to get in 2-3 players quickly and at least we would have some momentum going, but as long as nobody comes in for the Magpie players on sale, presumably there will be no incoming transfers, and that has to be a possibility, unless Mike relents and gives Joe some money, which he may have to.
We would even be willing to give some cash, if that would help, but a quick look in the piggy bank shows we are around £10M short of the £10M required – oh well.
Two of the midfield players Joe is said to be keen on are include Rangers captain Barry Ferguson and Portsmouth’s 6’4″ powerhouse, Papa Diop.
Kinnear said:
“One deal will automatically trigger the next one. So I’m banging on the door hoping that the buying club will make a decision.”
“I just hope it never comes down to Mike suggesting I sell Shay Given.”
Mike – are you listening?
Presumably that means that at least some clubs are interested but if Joe really does sell Enrqiue he will need to bring in two lest backs in January, and we don’t see that happening.
And a couple of players he could try to sell, and this will change as January progresses, are Alan Smith and Charles N’Zogbia.
We getting a little tired of Charles always talking about wanting to leave Newcastle so perhaps that would be a way to get the cash but we shouldn’t let Charles go on the cheap either, and if we have to do that we had better make sure we have another winger coming in, and also that we are secure at left full back.
We’d be OK letting Alan Smith go, but the problem with Alan is that he hasn’t played since August, because of his Achilles injury, and it may be hard t0 sell him in January, and that may have to wait until the summer.
But one thing is for certain, and that is we’ll be doing quite a number of deals in the summer, and it will be for those players whose clubs wouldn’t release them in January.
As fas as players leaving Newcastle in the summer, they could include Michael Owen, Mark Viduka, Alan Smith, Claudia Cacapa, David Edgar, Steve Harper, Xisco, Jose Enrique, Ameobi and Butt. That’s 10 players right there.
It will depend on who we manage to unload in January, and who signs their new contracts this month, since Ameobi, Harper and Butt still haven’t signed their contracts, and are still mulling over the offers.
Owen, Viduka and Smith leaving in the summer will free up around £230K/week in wages – and the only one we’d miss would be Michael.
Comments welcome.

Comment #41Farawayfan has hit many a nail on their heads. The Press are a disgrace and just peddle lies and distortions about any club that does not fit into their fab top four. We must not be guided or misguided by these Grub Street hacks. They may get paid for shite but that does not mean NUFC fans have to pay for or believe shite. We are lumbered with Ashley and the dwarf and without 350 million quid between us we can do bugger all about it. So, we must get behind the team (whoever we end up with in the side) and give them the passion and support. I am starting to wonder what pills Joe is taking – they are certainly affecting his memory and his posture!

Comment #42Are they any Newcastle fans on this site, you are destroying the club with your attitude, yes mistakes have been made but Mike is 100% committed to the club and is intent on bringing the club success but it won’t happen overnight.
I just can’t understand all this negativity what is it achieving?
Signings will be made in this transfer window but they will be made by the recruitment team and Mike and not Kinnear. Kinnear has identified targets however he cannot insist on a player being signed it is more a case of identifiying a position Kinnear suggesting a target and the recruitment team deciding on who to target based on who’s been scouted and what gets offered to them through agents.

You have to remember as well that the wage bill has been significantly reduced with Dyer, Parker, Emre etc all leaving. I know Guthrie, Bassong and Gutierrez wont be on as much as they were.

Comment #50Stardust im kinda confused here?… 5 years ago we where a European club who had just been in the champions league 2 times in a row. Now we are fighting relegation without any tranfer money and our best players jumping ship… Tell me pls… Why should we back Fat Ash?, do you think that supporting him comes with supporting NUFC?… No no mate… Supporting NUFC comes with a responsibility to protect the club against the disruptive influence of people such as Fat Ash.

Comment #51You know what? I’m sure that like everyone else, we’d love to believe that ‘David Craig’ is MA by another nameand all of the JFK statements are a smoke screen.
However, the indications so far do not auger well do they. Do we seen Spurs, Man U Man C etc talking themselves down and manifesting all the signs of a very unhappy club? Do we hell!!
Unlike his illustrious namesake who was a really steady right back, I’m afraid that the blog DC is talking tripe!! Mind you, I’d love to be proved wrong – I doubt it though

Comment #52David Craig – If that is the case, can you please let everone on this site know when in the history of the game in England that this way has worked?
What is the point of having a manager if he can’t choose the players?!!
Also I don’t believe you!

Mike is 100% committed to the club, dear, dear me. I feel like sticking my head in the fire. Can you remember the day Keegan was threatening to quit and Mike was swilling back champagne in New York making a tit of himself. I’m not even going to continue as 99% of people on here including the editor don’t need convincing.

Comment #57broon ale – totally agree. I’d hate to think JK is being used because it’s yet another slight on MA’s regime and also on JK. Far from wanting Ashley to capitulate, I’d like him to prove us all wrong but has everything to prove and yet every bit of PR so far has been amateurish, antagonistic and/or misleading. He does himself no favours whether it’s intentional or not. If there has ever been a quote which precursors the sale of one of our heros better than “I just hope it never comes down to Mike suggesting I sell Shay Given.” , then I’ve never read it.

“Are they any Newcastle fans on this site, you are destroying the club with your attitude, yes mistakes have been made but Mike is 100% committed to the club and is intent on bringing the club success but it won’t happen overnight.”
Because everytime we question whats going on at NUFC an angel dies…
How is wanting to know the truth about the thing you love destroying it?
No-one I know wants instant success, that’s a lie peddled by the media, stop believing it.
To me this season is a success if we stay up (improving the 1st team would be good too).
By the way, I want Ashley to stay. Stay and invest in the team. Improve the set-up (communications from the club for starters) and stabilise things. Getting rid of him won’t improve our situation unless someone better comes along, the same with the players.

i dont trust them full stop
kinnear should speak less on transfers
if we are in for these players then why talk about it youre just alerting every1 else
especially when you dont have much of a say in who actually comes in
what pisses me off with the current regime though
is they keep lying
but not just lying
they lie for the sake of it (at least thats what it would seem as the yare so bad it)
if youre going to lie you lie about something that isnt going to be found out or contradicted
for example kinnear stating that he enquirred about ferguson

Comment #64He’s 100% commited to selling the club!
He wpn’t spend more money on it as he stillwants to sell and is hoping the economic climate willbe slightly better in the summer!
If he’s 100% commited to the club god help us!
The realistic fact is he hasn’t got the money! Richer people than him have become a lot less rich over the last year.
Not his fault but he needs to cut his losses then and get out! He can’t afford to own a football club simple!!!!

Comment #65@David Craig – get used to it, the people on this blog whinge all the time regardless of events.
Zogs has to find a club that wants him – Arsenal doesn’t seem very realistic in my opinion and I reckon Shay will stay if the only clubs interested are Spurs and Man City
Wouldn’t be surprised to see Barton or Smith go but again I’m not sure who would want them
to be honest I’d rather see Butt go than Barton, Butts passing this season has been non existent and unless we get a CM we’ll never go forward.
We also need to start planning for life without Owen, with Viduka, Xisco and Owen all gone we’re going to be reliant on Carroll or Ameobi to play alongside Martins, if Martins gets injured then its just them two – which is worrying to say the least

Comment #66David Craig… Listen, im sure your saying what you do with the best intention. but all we have had since MA took over is talk… thats it… I dont really think we can get players like Sweinsteiger if im honest, but we could get the Bullards, Heskeys and Upsons of this world and if Mike just put the money where the talk is then we would all be more behind him… He cant stick with joe though… The one place where we need true class before we can even consider class players is the manager post. And with Erickson avialable and Rijkaard too, there is class out there.

Comment #67”Sell before we buy”……Does he realy think he could come back to SJP if he fcuks up another transfer window aswell.
I have i strange feeling that if we buy Boughera….Taylor will be sold to Arsenal.
Then our back line would look like this….till Beye comes back
Colo……………Boughera…….Bassong……..Baines
Wow….triple B 🙂

Comment #68For God sake, its 5 days into the window, nothings yet happened and most people on this blog are baying for blood. We are ‘supporters’, so lets get behind the club and support. Its all paper talk at the moment and nobody and i mean nobody on here knows what is going on in the club for sure. Lets judge on February the 2nd and see where we lie then.
PS – David Craig, are you by any chance the David Craig from Sky Sports News or can you not say?
PPS – Please dont shoot me down guys, i’m as underwhelmed as the next fan however us getting irate so soon isn’t going to help the team, the club or the players. We are supposed to be the best fans in the country, lets show people that we are by getting behind the team. Judge in February

I don’t think Colo can play at right back. I would go as far as saying that he’s probably never played there in his career. We know too well what happens when we play people out of position i.e Nzogbia at left back.

The names being touted over the weekend are just not what I had hoped for. I know all about the financial constraints, but for christ sake, 2 players at rangers who did NOTHING at charlton/watford and blackburn, and lita?! And what on earth are they thinking if they sell given to free funds, but then buy another GK when we have 4 in reserve?!
I am trying to be positive and wait until things happen but it dont look good people

Every toon fan on here supports the team when they play, week in week out, when we lose it ruins our weekend. There is a difference with supporting the team and supporting Ashley who has got nothing to do with the players or tradition of our club. He is a parasite that is leeching of us and is the main reason why we are where we are.

Comment #77Anyone else here think we should sell Given for £8mil+??
We have Harper in reserve, who IMO is just as good, and we have Krul who is going to be an excellent keeper in the next few years.
Given has been outstanding for us but he does need to leave, he’s done all he can here, thanks for 11 years but I would sell him 🙂
