Midfielder Danny Guthrie Fighting Flu For Saturday’s Game

12:42 pm, Wednesday, January 7th, 2009 by Ed Harrison · 92 Comments

It seems that Danny Guthrie has the flu and it’s touch and go whether he will be fit for the game against West Ham at St. James’ on Saturday.

Danny Guthrie - fighting the flu for Saturday

Joe Kinnear spoke to the Newcastle Evening Chronicle today:

“At the moment we’ve got one fit central midfielder in Geremi.”

“Nicky Butt is suspended, and Danny Guthrie is down with the flu, so we’ll have to see if he recovers sufficiently.”

“The people we have available are not regular starters, and some not orthodox center midfield men, so it’s serious.”

And with only Nicky Butt expected to return for the FA Cup replay with Hull City next Wednesday evening, Kinnear is praying hard that nobody else picks up an injury against West Ham on Saturday, because then we’ll be in desperate trouble.

Newcastle need some reinforcements as soon as possible in January, so we just have to hope Dennis Wise and the Newcastle Board are putting in the hours this month.

Kinnear added:

“I’ve made this statement to the owners so that they are aware of the situation.”

“The people that we’ll have on the bench against West Ham are only kids.”

“Tamas Kadar, Kazenga LuaLua, Ryan Donaldson – they are all young boys.”

“They are all on standby for West Ham and Hull, though, as I don’t see us getting anyone else back.”

“I’m working with a small crew of players.” “Training is like dancing on eggs at the moment.”

“We just keep it simple and hope that we can get 11 players out.”

Kinnear also has the experienced Habib Beye out for the foreseeable future, with the player traveling to Marseille to get a second opinion on his ankle problem, which seems another sign that the Newcastle medical team are second rate, and don’t know what they’re doing.

There are also fears that Oba Martins may have to have an operation for his groin problem, which he’s now had for over 3 weeks, so Kinnear is trying to stay as patient as he can as he added:

“Oba Martins has lower abdominal pain and muscle pain.

“He needs another scan, but he hasn’t had an operation yet.”

While we’re trying to bring in some decent players in January we may also want to add some additional skills to our medical team, which is hardly covering itself in glory right now.

What a way to run a club. :(

Comments welcome.

if he is out, who do we have to play in the center of midfield? no one.

I’d say maybe this will continue to open ashleys eyes to our troubles, but it wont. ltes pray he’s back or we’ll have a joke shop team out.

  • 2 Ross // Jan 7, 2009 at 12:50 PM

also, i’m unsure we can even afford a cup run in the long term. put the kids out against Hull and see how they do. if we crash and burn so be it. they deserve their chance and its one that cant afford to be taken in the league. Give them a go, give us a look and see what happens.

  • 3 TooKing // Jan 7, 2009 at 12:51 PM

    ohhh FFS !!!

Just put out 4 defenders and every striker, attacking player we have in the reserves and youth teams……maybe we can outscore them,

    7-6 we’ll win on Saturday.!

PS: it’s dire lads….seriously…we could really go down this year….i just realised it…

  • 4 neeraj // Jan 7, 2009 at 12:52 PM

i guess lua lua, godsmark, kadar would get their chance this week……

    …………………………given

    tayls……….colo…..bass…….kadar

    jonas……….godsmark…….lua …..n’zog

    ……………owen………….carroll……

  • 5 Murphy // Jan 7, 2009 at 12:53 PM

Jesus, when does the bad news stop? If he’s got flu on wednesday there’s no way he’ll play on the sat. That leaves us with what options in midfield?

“I’ve made this statement to the owners so that they are aware of the situation.”

“The people that we’ll have on the bench against West Ham are only kids.”

I recon this statement from Joe is a plea to Ashley to cough up money.

  • 6 Xisco Stu // Jan 7, 2009 at 12:59 PM

Give Zog a video of his performance in the Stoke replay this time last year and say “Same again, please”. He dictated that game after Emre got his marching orders, and we could really do with an encore in that position.

  • 7 Tom_Toon // Jan 7, 2009 at 1:01 PM

    Neeraj – Are you mental?

Playing 2 wingers in CM and one of them is 5ft 6.

    Lualua/Godsmark-Geremi-N’Zogbia-Jonas

    Thats the best available.

Another option is Doninger in CM, or even Donaldson.

I dont want to see Jonas play there, and I dont want to see Duff play at all!

  • 8 neeraj // Jan 7, 2009 at 1:02 PM

    tom_toon

    i forgot we had geremi
    is he fit

  • 9 neeraj // Jan 7, 2009 at 1:03 PM

    tom_toon

godsmark nufc profile says he is att mid

  • 10 Tom_Toon // Jan 7, 2009 at 1:07 PM

    He is a winger.

  • 11 VikingToon // Jan 7, 2009 at 1:08 PM

    bassong is suspended as well

  • 12 Danish_Magpie // Jan 7, 2009 at 1:09 PM

    Team for West Ham:

    ……………………..Given……………………

    Taylor……Colo……Bassong…..Enrique

    ……………..Geremi…Zoggy/Guthrie….
    Jonas…………………………………….Duff

    ………………Owen…….Carroll……………

Depends on Guthrie and Zoggy’s fitness I suppose..

  • 13 The Alchemist // Jan 7, 2009 at 1:12 PM

It seems our medical are a joke…Oba goes all the way to italy for a second opinion and Habib goes back to france. Like I have mentioned before it wouldn’t cost us that much (relatively) to get top class doctors, phsyios and other medical people in. Hull city are one of my clients at work and I go down to there training ground alot which is basically a bloody rugby club. When you compare that to our resources the injury situation is unacceptable!

  • 14 Danish_Magpie // Jan 7, 2009 at 1:12 PM

If neither Zoggy nor Guthrie are fit, I would play:

    ………………………..Given……………………….

    Taylor……..Colo………..Bassong….Enrique

    …………………….Geremi…………………………
    ……….Jonas………………………Duff………….

    …………………….Owen…………………………..
    ………….Xisco……………..Carroll…………….

and bring Lua-Lua on for Duff and let Jonas jump over to the left, and possibly bring on Ranger for Xisco/Carroll in the second-half. We don’t have many options though, do we?

  • 15 wsq // Jan 7, 2009 at 1:14 PM

    two words LEM SIP!
    no no no

    two words
    ASHLEY OUT!

  • 16 It Could Be Worse... We Could Be Spurs(DC) // Jan 7, 2009 at 1:16 PM

Just seen what happened at Spurs over the weekend RE Ghaly not getting sent on so sorry if I’m re-earthing a spent conversation but doesn’t he sound like the perfect addition?

Spurs (Harry) must want rid quick = cheap
Skilled CM w/ prem experience = what we need
Showed a total disregard and lack of respect to Spurs = Shoe-in to be a cult Toon hero
Did I mention he’d be cheap.

I remeber a few performances of his when he was on loan at Derby and he looked the best player on the field.

Ghaly, Mendes, Onohua + a LB would do for this window.

Also, why hasn’t JK even acknowledged Nile as one of our players even when taking about the ‘kids’?

  • 17 TooKing // Jan 7, 2009 at 1:19 PM

oh snap…..now Geremi wants out too….apparently there is even an offer for him by Besiktas……gotta love the Toon.

  • 18 Partizan // Jan 7, 2009 at 1:21 PM

Is there anything good about Newcastle lately……Ashley needs to invest at least 40 mill this January to save whats left to be saved.

    We need 2CM,1DM,1LB,1RW,1AM

Sell:Cacapa,Butt,Smith,Xisco(i really want him to stay, but he ain’t nothing but a benchwarmer under JK),Geremi.

Newcastle used to be a powerhouse name here where i live but now all i hear is ..”f**k NUFC,
    Newcastle’s a joke etc.
The recognition……totally lost i’m afraid, but not cos of the club itself, its the person who owns it.
I honestly can’t see Newcastle in the CL for the next 5-6 years if Ashley’s stays.
I apologise if i hurt someone’s feelings on this blog but thats the cruel truth.

  • 19 TooKing // Jan 7, 2009 at 1:27 PM

Thank god i’m also a Cleveland Cavaliers fan and they are nr 1 in the NBA right now ….or i would loose all my sanity……

Still Newcastle is an integral part of my life and what Ashley is doing is unacceptable. I’ll wait till the end of January and if nothing improves i’m getting the flags and boards out again and see you guys at St James.

  • 20 Whumpie // Jan 7, 2009 at 1:27 PM

It is odd that he’s not mentioned Ranger, but perhaps that’s just a slip.

Losing Guthrie would be a blow but I agree that having the old head of Geremi in there behind a young loon like Godsmark could be a worthwhile experiment. Not a good time to be experimenting, but “need’s must when the devil vomits in your handbag” as someone once said.

So for me, assuming Enrique’s fit, it’d be:

    - Given
    Taylor – Colo – Bassong – Enrique
    Jonas – Geremi – Godsmark – Zog
    - Carroll – Owen

And I agree with Danish_Magpie that if Zog’s either unfit or being a tit again, go 4-3-3 and just try to blast ‘em.

  • 21 TooKing // Jan 7, 2009 at 1:33 PM

Rather play Lua Lua then Godsmark Whumpie.

  • 22 Partizan // Jan 7, 2009 at 1:34 PM

    TooKing…..I’m Cleveland fan also.
Tough game this Friday for them

    Cavs vs Celtics

  • 23 SpartanChris // Jan 7, 2009 at 1:34 PM

    We’re all doomed!!!!!!!

N’Zogbia actually prefers to play centre midfield, so I’d stick Geremi in beside him and hopefully that will keep him happy til the end of the season and then flog him.

  • 24 Partizan // Jan 7, 2009 at 1:35 PM

Godsmark’s better than Lua Lua in every possible aspect…..except height :-)

  • 25 tino97 // Jan 7, 2009 at 1:35 PM

We have to play Geremi and the Zog. Though I have a feeling the JK fancies Jonas in the centre.

Probably be this if Guthrie is out:

    Given
    Taylor Colo Bass Jose
    Duff Geremi Jonas Zog
    Owen Carroll

  • 26 SpartanChris // Jan 7, 2009 at 1:36 PM

People keep saying we need a Left-Back, but don’t we also need a Right Back as cover for Beye. He’s the dog’s bollocks when he’s playing but Taylor/Edgar are woeful at right back when he’s injured.

  • 27 M.Stockley // Jan 7, 2009 at 1:37 PM

where did you hear geremi wants to go?

  • 28 tino97 // Jan 7, 2009 at 1:39 PM

We do need a RB. I think we should buy Onuoha as he can play anywhere across the back 4. But Beye is a big miss. Not just his defending, but at his best he is good going forward to.

  • 29 Partizan // Jan 7, 2009 at 1:39 PM

Jonas was used as a CM from time to time while in Mallorca. When i saw Jonas for the first time 2 years ago,he was playing that game as a DM.

  • 30 Sir Erec // Jan 7, 2009 at 1:39 PM

i think we will win, west ham’s 2-1 win over stoke does not tell the story as they did not play very convincingly

their full backs are terrible and their strike force should be able to be dealt with if we keep tabs on carlton cole and the occasional di michele moment of trickery that rarely is pulled off correctly.

    should be an interesting match!

  • 31 tino97 // Jan 7, 2009 at 1:40 PM

Its on Sky Sports about Geremi. If he leaves that will leave just Butt and Guthrie as centre mid. Thats appalling!

  • 32 SpartanChris // Jan 7, 2009 at 1:43 PM

Its on Sky Sports refarding Geremi and he says he’s heard that there is a bid for him.

I reckon we should sell him and see how quickly we can beat West Brom to the 20th place.

  • 33 TooKing // Jan 7, 2009 at 1:43 PM

@Partizan , hello there fellow cav then. :)

can’t wait for friday, gonna be a cracking game but a hard one, especially whit out Ilgauskas, but hope we win, Celtics in a little slump now, 2 losses on the trot.

  • 34 Tom_Toon // Jan 7, 2009 at 1:43 PM

Jonas has looked poor in CM for us and Godsmark ni the centre in the premiership is suicide.

DC – I have been sayn get Ghaly for months.

  • 35 M.Stockley // Jan 7, 2009 at 1:45 PM

sky sports also saying barton is pompey’s top target

If Zog and Guthrie are fit if not..

    ——–Given———
    Taylor–Bassong–Colocini-Enrique

    —–Owen—Carroll

  • 37 M.Stockley // Jan 7, 2009 at 1:50 PM

letting barton go would be a huge mistake imo

  • 38 tino97 // Jan 7, 2009 at 1:51 PM

I think if people are fit. JK will play Duff up front, he has done that before, but it never seemed to worked to be honest. I would give Carroll a shot again. He was good in the 1st half, but faded.

  • 39 keith // Jan 7, 2009 at 1:51 PM

i dont think germi would be a massive loss , fact of the matter is the league table doesnt lie so we are the 14th best team in the league at this moment in time so we need to completely overhaul the squad to be where we all want to be…up the table, it will take time but we will get there

  • 40 toonj // Jan 7, 2009 at 1:52 PM

Its saying on ss that ferguson is available and that nufc may make a bid,i hope not

  • 41 TooKing // Jan 7, 2009 at 1:53 PM

We can’t sell Barton ffs, he’s one of the handful of good players we have.

  • 42 tino97 // Jan 7, 2009 at 1:54 PM

There is no way Joey can be allowed to leave he is our best Centre Midfielder. Who cares what money we can get, we need him. I’m sure he wants to stay after the club and the fans have stood by him. Though the club have tried to sell him already. The transfer window is turning into a disaster.

  • 43 CLINT FLICK // Jan 7, 2009 at 1:55 PM

Geremi to Besiktas is ancient news, as is Barton to portsmouth-keep up lads.

  • 44 SpartanChris // Jan 7, 2009 at 1:56 PM

Geremi is a useful utility playerwhen we have injuries. I would rather play him at right back than Taylor.

It would cost a lot more to replace him in January than the actualy money we will receive for him.

  • 45 Partizan // Jan 7, 2009 at 1:56 PM

TooKing……I hope they’ll keep their undefeated status at home this Friday.

If you remember the Playoffs last season….it was Cleveland who almost dumped Boston in the 2nd round in the playoffs of the Eastern Conference.

  • 46 Dan157 // Jan 7, 2009 at 1:57 PM

I think it will end up being Geremi and N’Zogbia in the middle however i would like to see Zog stay on the left and bring in Lua Lua. It is getting desperate. Also Geremi is quoted as saying he wants to leave and that there is a european club with a bid in for him.

    http://www.skysports.com/story/0,19528,11678_4759489,00.html

We cannot surely let a single player go now after todays news. And it’s true as well that Portsmouth are after Barton who knows Tony Adams quite well through the sporting chance clinic. We must be mad though to consider selling anyone.

  • 47 tino97 // Jan 7, 2009 at 1:59 PM

I wouldn’t be surprised if we sold Barton. Pompey have some money now. They will probably put in a decent bid. Fat Mike will accept and see it has good business. Losing Barton would be the final nail in our coffin. Especially if he is replaced by Barry Ferguson. Get ready for the championship!

  • 48 TooKing // Jan 7, 2009 at 2:01 PM

off course i remember Partizan, it was an epic battle and the Cavs were so close to knocking them Celtics out…….we’ll get them this year though and then easily beat the Lakers in the Final. :D

  • 49 Dan157 // Jan 7, 2009 at 2:02 PM

Joey Barton is on 70k a week wages as well and Ashley has already attempted once to get them reduced when Barton was in trouble. The way things are with money at the moment i think Ashley would be glad to get rid of Barton and replace him with some young 17 year old on £400 a week.

  • 50 keith // Jan 7, 2009 at 2:03 PM

lads some of you have to relax , ill admit under mike we have not had the best record in the transfer windows ( understatment i know ) , but you cant belive most of the rubbish in the papers and rumors we just have to wait and see what happens and hopefully daniel craig is right and we got all the players we want :)

But main point of that comment is relax

  • 51 halftimebovril // Jan 7, 2009 at 2:05 PM

  • 52 It Could Be Worse... We Could Be Spurs(DC) // Jan 7, 2009 at 2:07 PM

TT as I have I, but he couldn’t have done anything more to endear himself further to me than by pissing off all the Spurs fans. What an amazing scene with Harry having to ask his assistant ‘what’s going on?’ If I were JK I’d have been calling Harry immediately after the game. 1M?

Oh and the Cavs suck! Loved the traveling call against Lebron in our (DC) win over them. If only they’d call it more consistently, biggest moaner in all of sport!

  • 53 Dan157 // Jan 7, 2009 at 2:08 PM

This is just madness. We have the biggest injury list in the premiership and one of the smallest squads any yet all the talk is of SELLING. You can now add Guthrie to this list on here as well:

    http://www.physioroom.com/news/english_premier_league/epl_injury_table.php

Also will N’Zogbia definitely be back for the West Ham game cos he limped off against Hull.

  • 54 tino97 // Jan 7, 2009 at 2:08 PM

I’ve seen the real David Craig on Sky today. The only coming out of Newcastle is Ameobi, apart from that its all quiet. Not where the other david craig is?

Stoke are on the verge of signing Joe Ledley!

If we were in for him and we can’t compete with Stoke we are in a right mess!!!

  • 70 Danish_Magpie // Jan 7, 2009 at 2:23 PM

…and Pompey want Barton :-) Now just sell Butt and move for:

Appiah (free but big wages), Nigel de Jong (7-8m considering what they got for v. der Vaart) and either Elano or Bullard. Give us a midfield of:

    DM: de Jong
    CM: Appiah, Guthrie
    AM: Elano/Bullard

    Would do fine by me!

Unrealistic, I know, but that would be a really nice centram midfield quartet.

  • 71 Dan157 // Jan 7, 2009 at 2:25 PM

  • 73 Danish_Magpie // Jan 7, 2009 at 2:29 PM

I’m not seriously suggesting selling either unless we have replacements lined up. I am just saying if we were able to sign let’s say:

    Appiah (free)
    de Jong (8m)
    Elano/Bullard (5m)

    and sell:

    Barton (5m)
    Geremi (2m)
Butt (keep on until summer then let go on free/sell for small fee)

That would be 6m very wisely spent.

  • 74 Dan157 // Jan 7, 2009 at 2:30 PM

and struggle till end of season
