Bassong Has Been The Find Of The Season – Kinnear

Joe Kinnear has come out today and said 22 year-old French defender Sebastien Bassong has been arguably out best defender this season so far.

Sebastien Bassong – find of the season – celebrates with Zog

The Paris-born youngster had to come to the club for a week on trial and played in a pre-season friendly at Doncaster Rovers in July, when the Newcastle fans had no idea who the new center- half was in the first half, and who was playing extremely well.

And Bassong, after impressing when given some early chances this season at both left back and center-back, has now done enough to win a regular starting place at the center of the Newcastle defense, at the expense of  local lad and England Under-21 captain, Steven Taylor, another 22 year old.

Bassong’s presence, self-assurance, strength and coolness at the back have seen the Newcastle defense keep four clean sheets from the last seven matches he has started at center-back. And Newcastle fans are hardly used to this solidness in defense, that he ahs brough to the side, with his excellent partnership with Fabricio Coloccini.

And we all know what happened when he didn’t start  11 days ago, and so we’ll not even mention it.

And such has been his impact that Newcastle manager Joe Kinnear spoke to nufcTV ahead of Saturday’s game against West Ham, and praised the youngster – a lot:

“He was fantastic against Hull on Saturday and I think he’s been the find of the season,”

“Since I took the risk and put him in at centre-back against Chelsea he hasn’t looked back.”

“He’s got stronger and better as the games progress and he’s a dominant force.” “He’s arguably our best defender at the moment.”

“He’s very strong aerially and it showed against Liverpool what a big miss he was.”

“I’m delighted to have him back and it was a major plus to keep another clean sheet.”

Bassong we a terrific signing for us in the summer, and whoever scouted this lad, we hope we can get some more good young unknown players that can come through as quickly as Seb has done this season.

It certainly shows that with some good scouting we can find some good players that we can bring to the club rather cheaply.

Comments welcome.

The awful truth is apart from Bassong i’m struggling to think of another player who could challenge him for player of the season.

(Given, but will he be here?)

  • Doing Exactly what Keegan did last window…loads of player spin..I predicted this would happen to try and distract us from the lack of transfers.

The Entertainers – I would have said Jonas could have rivalled him, but he hasn’t been outstanding.

Just shows the real standard of our season so far!

    Was he scouted by Wise?

I didn’t think wise was a scout, thought he was DoF, there to do the deals after the scouts or manager had picked their targets.

I know we are all being hard on Wise, but what has he really done, can he take credit for anything?

Yes I remember most on here saying £1.5 million for a defender!!! He can’t be any good..

Again just goes to prove young french players can be bought for peanuts. They have all the talent and skill to make it. It just comes down to attitude mainly with the young french players.

Look at N’Zogbia as an example of this, the only thing I question with N’Zogbia is his consistency level and his attitude. With Bassong you can’t question that, reminds me of a young Distin!

I think he will go on to be a full french international in time I really do. All the best Bassong!

I disagree with Jonas. I think he is a quality player and a real bargain but I think even Jonas would say he needs to show his real talent more often.

Against Man Utd I said he could go on to be one of the best wingers with his superb all round play (tracking back, never losing the ball) and of course getting forward. He needs to show that level more often but remember he did have the injury to his shoulder which can affect you a lot because you can barely train with an injury like that.

He will get better and better though as he gains his confidence back.

    Anyone remenber the Bassong chant:

“No 46 who the f’ck are ya?” (or somit like that).

Now look at him – his commitment on the pitch speaks volumes in itself. Furture geordie legend.

The French National team are in a crisis with their defence, particularly at CB. They are even still relying on Bousong cos there are so few defenders available to them. They should take a look at our lad.

Well JK should have made the risk already at Fulham because Cacapa was awful!

Player of the season so far contenders(in order)

    1. Bassong
    2. Given(if he stays)
    3. Jonas
    4. Coloccini
    5. Martins
    6. Beye
    7. Guthrie
    8. Owen
    9. Ameobi
    10. Enrique

One of them will win it, gaurantee, but which 1?

Is this why N’Zog is looking to get away to further his international career? Although they appear to be mates, would Zog be devastated if Bassong got a senior call-up ahead of him?
I don’t know whether the coaches have failed N’Zogbia as he seems to have stagnated. He certainly hasn’t proven he is the central midfielder he once thought he was destined to be. I hope he gets a chance there on Saturday ahead of Cacapa, perhaps alongside Guthrie, Geremi or LuaLua. But I wish he’d button it and knuckle down to improving his game. Lack of progress personally and for the team is always somebody else’s fault.
