Manchester City have made a £3M offer for Newcastle goalkeeper Shay Given, which has been described by the club as laughable.
Shay Given – £3M from Man City offer is laughable
Shay Given may also feel the offer is a derogatory one, given he is world class and still has a good 5 years left at the top level.
And of course Man City are the richest club in the world and are backed by Multi-Billionaire Arabs, who seem not too shy about spending money, unlike some other owners.
A senior Newcastle source told the Newcastle Journal this morning:
“We received a bid for Shay in writing from Manchester City and we dismissed it out of hand.”
“It was for between three and four million pounds, which is laughable really when you consider we are talking about the best goalkeeper in the Premier League.”
Newcastle seem unhappy about the low bid, and Joe Kinnear was also aware of the bid when he was contacted by the Journal last night at his Jesmond Dene home.
However, the bad news for Newcastle fans is that City have made an initial offer, and will no doubt follow it up with one or two improved bids, so we could still see Shay leave the club in January.
But Newcastle manager Joe Kinnear is hardly willing to sell his star goalkeeper and said last night:
“I’ve remained consistent on this matter all the way through. I do not want to lose any of my best players and Shay is one of those.”
“I’m far more interested in who we are trying to bring in to strengthen the squad.”
“It’s unhelpful to say the least at the moment to have agents trying to unsettle my players. “
This will not be the last of the Given affair but we think it will take a double figure bid to tempt Newcastle to part with their top goalkeeper, but we’d like him to stay on Tyneside.
Good news today in the Journal is that Newcastle will make their first signing early next week when the club will sign Peter Lovenkrands, a speedy winger from Denmark, who you may remember was signing for Newcastle back in 2000, before he suddenly ended up at Glasgow Rangers.
