Newcastle Pursue Portuguese Central Midfielder

It’s Sunday again so we are linked with even more players, so take most of these with a pinch of salt, but it’s always at least entertaining should we say, to see who we are linked with.

Raul Meireles – good Portuguese central box to box midfielder

And one of the latest new players today we are linked with is Portuguese International Raul Meireles, who has emerged as the latest candidate to occupy the central midfield berth at Newcastle United.

This is reported by the The News of the World, so make that a rather large pinch of salt.

However, the 25-year-old is a regular in the FC Porto starting eleven, and is thought to be an excellent candidate to play in the heart of the Newcastle midfield. That’s an area we are very short in with only Butt and Guthrie fit right now, although Joey Barton starts training again next week, but this is about getting more depth into the squad.

The 5’10” central midfielder has played over 80 times for Porto and 25 times for Portugal, so he looks a decent enough player.  Meireles is said to be a good all-around attacking or defensive midfielder, with excellent passing abilities and good long-range shooting.

Raul Meireles has won the following honors at Porto but joined them after Jose Mourinho left Porto or Chelsea, in the summer of 2004.

Portuguese League: 2005-06, 2006-07, 2007-08
Portuguese Cup: 2005-06
Portuguese SuperCup: 2006

The news is that FC Porto want £8M for their highly-rated midfielder, and negotiations are currently said to be on-going with the Tyneside club, but we’re not at all sure where we will get £8M from.

We presumably have no money to spend until we can sell some of our fringe players.

What do you think?

Comments welcome.

He is a good player and would bring that attacking flair in the middle of the park which we have been lacking since the departure of Dyer, Jenas etc

Probably not true. Would be nice though. A bit of class in midfield. Just what we need.

YES PLEASE!!!!! LOL, I don’t think anyone has come out and said we have no money to spend as yet it has all just been blown out of proportion by the media. If i am wrong someone please tell me if Ashley has come out and said there is no money. All i have heard from the papers is that we must sell before we buy but anyone in their right mind can see that is impossible for NUFC to do with the size of the squad but apart from that JK has has said he only wants to get rid of fringe players and he will receive very little for them player. There must be funds available from Ashley if he wants to keep his club in the EPL and signing someone like this will be a step in the right direction.

Partizan – if you’re that desperate, try putting your link into a web proxy program on the internet and then keep clicking “refresh”.

As for transfers, I hope the management have something up their sleeve otherwise it’s going to be a depressing summer for us all.

I doubt this is true, but if it is and he comes in to Newcastle, then probably Barton will be heading to Portsmouth.

Was watching Sky Sports news the other day and that agent, Willie (the fraud)McKay was being interviewed…He said that we are in the process of negiotiating a big money move for a central midfielder..this could be the lad…v good player…havnt seen much of him apart from in Euro 2008 where he looked the part…
Seen a few comments on here this morning wondering why there is money available when we havnt sold yet…If we had said there was, for example, 20 million to spend, the price of every player would shoot up and we would be back paying daft fees for average players…Beye, Bassong, Guthrie and Jonas….combined total around 8.5 million….= Boumsong signing in Jan…point made

Would be a stellar signing. Him or de Jong for the defensive midfield spot. Both would cost around 8m but both would be good value for money.

He is probably the only good player we have been linked with this window.

I would sell any one of our midfielders excep Barton or Jonas to get him. Sell Zog and buy Meireles.

If we can get him, sign him! For the love of god sign him! He would be an ideal replacement for Nicky Butt!

Meireles and Barton central midfield pairing! Wow.
