No Progress On Shay Given Move – Good

After the news in the last day or two that Manchester City had made a derisory bid of £3M for goalkeeper Shay Given, Chris Hughton has said that as far as he knows there has been no progress made on the potential transfer of Given to moneybags Manchester City.

Shay Given – no progress on Given transfer move

After the game yesterday where Newcastle struggled but came back to get a point against an enterprising West Ham side, in which our former players Scott Parker and Craig Bellamy were on form, Chris again filled in for manager Joe Kinnear at the press conference.

Chris commented on the current situation with Shay Given and said:

“All we’ve seen of Shay is him coming in and training and conducting himself like he always has.”

“As far as I know there has been no progress there.”

And of course since 11 days have gone in the transfer market, and we are a third of the way through the window with nobody bought or sold, Chris was asked about the transfer situation.

Hughton reiterated the club’s desire to strengthen our injury-hit squad before the end of the transfer window, with hopefully a number of top players coming in to help get the team out of the relegation fight.

Hughton added:

“We’re working hard behind the scenes and we do realize we need to bring in two or three new players.”

“We’re hopeful that by the end of the transfer window we’ll be able to bring them in.”

Fans are willing to wait a bit, since we still have 22 days left (window closes 3 weeks tomorrow), but things should not be left too late because that’s what happened in the summer and we ended up with the window closing and not having a big enough squad, which we have proved over the last 4 months.

We cannot let that happen again this time around – no way!

Comments welcome.

I’m going to guess “posts” are articles on the blog. Aside of that and “comments” I have not one clue

Dennis – we can hope, although I’d have Enrique over Riise at the moment.

In all honesty, would anybody be that devastated if Given left (but only for a fee over £10m)? It would free up funds for other areas where we definitely need strengthening, and we have ample reliable cover for the GK position.

I think Shay is amazing, but it might be too good an opportunity to turn down. I know it would indicate that we are a “selling club”, but if needs must, then yes, we are. It is only the position we are strong enough to sell in, and if we dont get money for new signings, then we will be selling more than just Given in the summer when we are in the Championship!

I wouldn’t sell Duff ATM, if we do sell him we won’t get a lot anyways and he did look good in the past few games.

I think after the window our team will resemble something similar to:

    Harper

    Taylor Colo Bass Riise

    Jonas Guthrie Barton Lovenkrands

    Owen Martins

I think we will sell N’Zogbia and Given, and that Enrique will drop to the bench. I think we will get another defender, but that they will be a squad player. I would love to see a solid AM but I dont think we will get one. Perhaps a young striker as well, but nothing special.
I would try to put names together, but it’s a useless affair, and no doubt the club will trump us with someone who’s name hasn’t been linked before (see Guthrie, Bassong, Gutierrez, etc).

I think we should push City for 15 million plus.

But, we need a guarantee from MA that the money will be invested in the team.

Does anyone consider that the Milner money went on Col, Bassong et al?

We should sell Zog and Taylor and with that money bring in Pandev. Moreno and Pereira won’t be to expensive so that should be easy to manufacture, and then hopefully we can find the funds to bring in Barnetta.
