After the news in the last day or two that Manchester City had made a derisory bid of £3M for goalkeeper Shay Given, Chris Hughton has said that as far as he knows there has been no progress made on the potential transfer of Given to moneybags Manchester City.
Shay Given – no progress on Given transfer move
After the game yesterday where Newcastle struggled but came back to get a point against an enterprising West Ham side, in which our former players Scott Parker and Craig Bellamy were on form, Chris again filled in for manager Joe Kinnear at the press conference.
Chris commented on the current situation with Shay Given and said:
“All we’ve seen of Shay is him coming in and training and conducting himself like he always has.”
“As far as I know there has been no progress there.”
And of course since 11 days have gone in the transfer market, and we are a third of the way through the window with nobody bought or sold, Chris was asked about the transfer situation.
Hughton reiterated the club’s desire to strengthen our injury-hit squad before the end of the transfer window, with hopefully a number of top players coming in to help get the team out of the relegation fight.
“We’re working hard behind the scenes and we do realize we need to bring in two or three new players.”
“We’re hopeful that by the end of the transfer window we’ll be able to bring them in.”
Fans are willing to wait a bit, since we still have 22 days left (window closes 3 weeks tomorrow), but things should not be left too late because that’s what happened in the summer and we ended up with the window closing and not having a big enough squad, which we have proved over the last 4 months.
We cannot let that happen again this time around – no way!
