Newcastle Said To Bid £4M For Raul Meireles

Good news in the Daily Mail this morning that Newcastle are still pursuing 25 year-old Portugal International central midfielder Raul Meireles.

Raul Meireles £4M bid for Portuguese midfielder

We have already reported the news that the Portuguese International, Raul Meireles has emerged as a player that Joe Kinnear could be interested in bringing to Tyneside, and the news was first reported 8 days ago in the News Of The World.

The Daily Mail says today that Newcastle are ready to make a £4M bid for the player, but presumably we still have to sell some fringe players before we can buy.

The news that we may be after Nigel Quashie today was disappointing, but if we can bring in Meireless with Quashie, that would be a bad couple of players for just £4.5M. And thyewn the central midfiled would be fought out between Butt, Guthrie, Barton, Meireles and Quashie.

The 25-year-old is a regular in the FC Porto starting eleven, and is thought to be an excellent candidate to play in the heart of the Newcastle midfield.

That’s an area we are very short in with only Butt and Guthrie fit right now, although Joey Barton starts training again this week, but this is all about getting more depth into the squad after all.

The 5’10” central midfielder has played over 80 times for Porto and 15 times for Portugal, and he looks a good player who would certainly improve the Newcastle squad, and add significant competition for places.

Meireles is said to be a good all-around attacking or defensive midfielder, with good passing abilities and good long-range shooting, and has done well at Porto, since joining them from Boavista in 2004.

The previous news was that FC Porto wanted £8M for their highly-rated midfielder, but that seemed far too high at the time, and £4M would appear to be a good deal for Newcastle.

But presumably we still have to sell some of our fringe players before we can bring new players into the club, and that will not be easy — let’s face it.

What do you think?

Sorry to disappoint but there has been nothing about this in Portugal, even n the last 3/4 days since the news borke in England.

    Ed – He’d be £8mil minimum.

I dont think this rumours carries any weight, shame because he is the perfect player for us.

    I think you’ve made a typo there Ed, shouldn’t it be ‘wouldn’t’?

Meireles is the real target for Kinnear and Wise, they’ve been scouting him for a while and they’re definitely going to bid for him. £4 million is quite low though if they want to get him.

@Toon_Sydney: The reported figures for Geremi’s fee seems to be in the range of 1-1.5M Euros.

Considering the number of signings the press gossip columns got right over the summer, I think we can safely say that if we make any signings we won’t hear about them until they’re truly on board

I don’t have a problem with Quashie coming – he gives us another central midfield player to atleast have in the squad. What is disappointing is that this is not coupled with other stronger signings. I don’t want us to build like Citeh as I think what they and Chelski do is just boring and takes the fun out of football. Lets just hope for another Bassong / Collo / Guti etc. Keep the faith everyone!!!!!

Does anyone think the papers know about as much as we do? Go through every player they link us with and see which ones materialize and it’s about 1 player in every 100. That offer on Meireles would be too low but that just about sums up ashleys tenure here when it comes to transfers, put in really low insulting offers and hope for the best.

Start low and finish lower – if we bid 8 mil they’d ask for 10 mil – Lets not be soft here. they know a little about what they’re doing.

What would this player be like for us say the Porto directors were drugged and accepted our £4 million bid.

Meireles would be perfect and is just the type of player we need, can’t help thinking 4 million is to low though, agree that 8 million looks like it

So who do we sell that’ll raise that sort of cash?

I’m always going to be doubtful over Portuguese midfielders after Hugo Viana.

When we bought him I was seriously excited – European Young Player of the year, on the fringe of the full national side…

To be fair we always played Viana out of position but he never looked like he could handle the pace of the premiership.

I guess I’ll have to reserve judgement on this lad.

This player is brilliant. 4m is to low for his quality

The fat bast@rd wont put his chubby little fingers in his pocket, even the Milner money has disapeared?

Lets face it, MA is a crook, a thief, and he is bleeding this club dry and selling for a tidy profit

    I HATE MIKE ASHLEY

The old Hugo Viana argument will always come up but if we had chased the right guy a certain world player of the year then we would be portugeese mad! Plus i will always say Viana was always played as a winger. he should of been trained and studied under Gary Speed! that was his preferred position!

Viana is good, never given a chance. That was one rare mistake good old Sir Bobby made as manager!! Portuguese players are quality, their national team is better than ours, which is why they knock us out of every tournament lol!

You are a PONS if you think Hamar is worth more than 20quid
He cannot last more than 25 mins on the field.
No better than Butt although he can pass the ball sometimes

Didn’t say he was worth anything mate. Just said he was worth signing. Just my opinion.

Hamann was statistically the best passer and tackler in the premiership in his day.

I’ll be honest I would worry about his fitness level, but he’s better than some of the players we have.

From scanning the aether it seems he is a quality player of the type we need. Any haggling and we could always sling Zog in as a part of the deal? Or, to confuse matters, we could always ask Ashley for the cash?

Or we could offer Enrique as part of the deal then swap Nzogbia for Shorey plus cash . Trouble with that would be 2 in and 2 out when we need more numbers . On the plus side we would be getting rid of Nzogbia who we now need to kick out of the club
