Good news in the Daily Mail this morning that Newcastle are still pursuing 25 year-old Portugal International central midfielder Raul Meireles.
Raul Meireles – £4M bid for Portuguese midfielder
We have already reported the news that the Portuguese International, Raul Meireles has emerged as a player that Joe Kinnear could be interested in bringing to Tyneside, and the news was first reported 8 days ago in the News Of The World.
The Daily Mail says today that Newcastle are ready to make a £4M bid for the player, but presumably we still have to sell some fringe players before we can buy.
The news that we may be after Nigel Quashie today was disappointing, but if we can bring in Meireless with Quashie, that would be a bad couple of players for just £4.5M. And thyewn the central midfiled would be fought out between Butt, Guthrie, Barton, Meireles and Quashie.
The 25-year-old is a regular in the FC Porto starting eleven, and is thought to be an excellent candidate to play in the heart of the Newcastle midfield.
That’s an area we are very short in with only Butt and Guthrie fit right now, although Joey Barton starts training again this week, but this is all about getting more depth into the squad after all.
The 5’10” central midfielder has played over 80 times for Porto and 15 times for Portugal, and he looks a good player who would certainly improve the Newcastle squad, and add significant competition for places.
Meireles is said to be a good all-around attacking or defensive midfielder, with good passing abilities and good long-range shooting, and has done well at Porto, since joining them from Boavista in 2004.
The previous news was that FC Porto wanted £8M for their highly-rated midfielder, but that seemed far too high at the time, and £4M would appear to be a good deal for Newcastle.
But presumably we still have to sell some of our fringe players before we can bring new players into the club, and that will not be easy — let’s face it.
What do you think?
