It’s 54 years since Newcastle last won a home trophy when we hammered Man City 3-1 in the 1955 FA Cup Final but that’s in the days when our club could actually win something.
But it will now be at least another year before we win another home trophy as Newcastle went down tonight to a weakened Hull City side 1-0, with a goal after 80 minutes from Daniel Cousin, that sealed the win for the Tigers and sent Newcastle crashing out at the very first hurdle.
It was always going to be tough with 11 players out of the side though injury, and although Newcastle had the chances to score this was only Hull’s second win in 14 games and the second time they have beaten the Magpies at St. James’ Park this season,. After beating us in the league 2-1, in the first game after Kevin Keegan resigned from the club.
Si it wasn’t like we were playing a team in form but they were good enough and Hull City were able to record their first win since beating Middlesbrough 2-1 early last month.
The goal was scored in a game of few chances when Bernard Mendy‘s shot was deflected into the path of Richard Garcia who squared it nicely for Daniel Cousin, who turned the ball home from inside the six year area.
Andy Carroll was brought on after 76 minutes for Xisco, who had a decent game, and Carroll almost scored a late equalizer as he bundled a low Duff cross goal wards but the ball trickled wide off a Hull defender.
But the corner came to nothing, as Given had raced up to try to save the day.
This is a big psychological loss for the team because we would have had a home tie with Milwall, but now all we have to concentrate on is the league, and we have to hope we don’t have another relegation fight on our hands.
However, with Ashley still keeping his hands firmly in his pockets as far as transfer money goes, there will be due concern among the Newcastle faithful, that if we can be beaten by Hull City twice at home, that’s the mark of a team who could well be relegated this season.
Since we beat Tottenham, 2-1 at St. James’ Park, we have now lost three and drawn two, and if that doesn’t set alarm bells off at the club, then nothing will.
The good news, if we can call it that, is that this complete capitulation in the cup may scare Mike Ashley just enough for him to give some money to Joe Kinnear to buy some decent players in January.
If he doesn’t he could well own a Championship club come May, and it will be completely his fault, let’s make no mistake about that.
Comments welcome.

Comment #81@ Scotty: Calm down mate all is not lost where were we at this stage last season? Certainly not 11th. We are currently 11th in a highly competitive league and fighting hard. We have Blackburn this weekend, a winnable game. Things this season are better than last.

Comment #82Well Mbia is the only midfielder in the Cameroon squad who is near 6 foot 2….
4 million seems cheap though…This doers show that the guardian was right yesterday when they said we were after him…The other player should be Ebondo then!
We need another right back, We still have enrique at left back for the time being…

Comment #84I reckon Joe is giving these details away because its a piss take.
Generally if you use common sense…..if we release that we’re signing a decent player for 4 million…..surely every other club would then rush in with a bid of 5 mill for same player.
And joe does make it a bit overly obvious with his comments.

Comment #86Flan-fair play to you, that made me laugh, haha.
I really cant see M’bia turning up for 4 mil like. He’s exactly the type of player we need though.
However, if we’re bidding for these players, is this kinnear subtly saying those two loan deals have fallen through? unless we’re trying to bring in four or five midfielders this window..which seems a little unrealistic. (lovenkrands, the 2 loans, and the 2 bids)?

Comment #92Why are people slating Xisco i was involved in several good moves and wanted the ball.
Owen on the other hand needs to be dropped, ran away from ball all the time, wandered around centre circle doin nothing most of games and missed several good chances. He doesnt want to be there, thats obvious.
Butt is another waste of space shadow of the player he was last season gave ball away often.

FFS, I just cannot believe that happened. I don’t know, I woke up today with a good feeling that we could win whatsoever, just hoping for a positive turning in this season.
But it seems just impossible! Why, why to disrespect Keegan giving a fuckin’ man called Dennis Wise that has no identification, no love, no care, anything for the Newcastle clubs and it’s fans. Why? They just disrespected one of our greatest idols to change their mind when a new interim manager was appointed. It didn’t make sense.
Reappoint Keegan next summer, please. We just can’t continue in such an embaressing situation with a club’s idol. Or at least pay him millions whatsoever a go to the press (both Ashley and KK) to say everything is OK between them.
This night was really desapointing.

Comment #95i think were gonna sign FOUR players, because these to 4m players will be 8m then he said it could be nearer 10m (with the two loan deals mooted, do you think?)

Comment #97Out of interest, this sky sports article right, Kinnear is saying we’ve made two serious (why they’d be anything other than serious bids i dont know. “can we have him for four mil? haha, only joking!”) 4 million bids, for two players, obviously amounting to 8 million. He then goes on to say that we could however, end up spending 10 million.
What does that mean? if they reject the four million bids, we’ll go back with two five million bids and just hope they accept second time round? :/

Comment #99@michael 12 – i like your optimism.
if you look at all the lesser teams in the prem league over the last few seasons i.e wigan, fulham, west ham and bolton – these have all strengthened succesfully. Why have we not? Xisco? Gonzalez?
The gap between the bottom 10 clubs doesn’t exist this season. So if we lose given, owen and zog, and replace with dodgy loan signings like lovenkrands, quashie etc…. It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to work it out!
Hope i’m wrong mate.

Comment #102To bring in M’Bia on the cheap really would be quite signing coup for the club, providing of course that his club agree with the fee, which is of course the only real issue here. Do people honestly think Rennes will take the 4 million?

Comment #105Duff was terrible yet again tonight. Neither Butt or Guthrie boss midfield, nor do they offer a great deal of creativity, or even that much relief for the defence. Owen was pretty non existent, decent game for Xisco. Why didn’t we give Ranger a run out? That kid is being neglected at this club and will leave.

Comment #106Jonny-that was the feeling i had to be honest. Who knows, maybe he’s keeping the fans accuratly updated with what is going on in the window, maybe he’s being filled with nonsense from the board.
Maybe he’s mentioning this right after the match due to the poor result in an attempt to put a dampener on it, maybe the loan deals are falling through and he’s trying to keep the positive transfer thoughts going before the storm tomorrow.
Maybe, everything is suddenly perfect. The two loan deals will come through tomorrow, we will spend the ten million and bring in another two players. B*ll*cks, i’ve just fallen out of bed.

Comment #110By the way can I just remind people Edgar is a young centre back being played out of position. Fair enough he obviously isn’t very good technically but I just see this determination about him, like he wants to play and do well. I like the kid, but he’s not a full back.

Comment #113The Season was over when we played Hull in the League at home. Now the FA Cup is over against the same team, same place. Only at NUFC. It’s a shame that our precious club crest is being dragged through the mud these days because of one joke of a billionare. Complete and utter disrespect for something that should NOT be his. The fact that he bought OUR CLUB for a bath tub toy is sickening. You’ll get yours one day fat Mike……….Karma!

Comment #117They got lucky with the goal, it was weak but the deflection could have went anywhere. It’s typical. The owen header however was terrible, he was unmarked and he hardly connected, it looked like it hit him on the back of the head, or his shoulder. Xisco’s miss was also poor like.
Once again Kazenga looked decent from what i saw of him, full of pace and wanting to get forward.
To be fair right, the radio made that coloccini tackle seem alot weaker than it was. he’s commited but he goes through the back of cousin whether we like it or not.
