It’s 54 years since Newcastle last won a home trophy when we hammered Man City 3-1 in the 1955 FA Cup Final but that’s in the days when our club could actually win something.
But it will now be at least another year before we win another home trophy as Newcastle went down tonight to a weakened Hull City side 1-0, with a goal after 80 minutes from Daniel Cousin, that sealed the win for the Tigers and sent Newcastle crashing out at the very first hurdle.
It was always going to be tough with 11 players out of the side though injury, and although Newcastle had the chances to score this was only Hull’s second win in 14 games and the second time they have beaten the Magpies at St. James’ Park this season,. After beating us in the league 2-1, in the first game after Kevin Keegan resigned from the club.
Si it wasn’t like we were playing a team in form but they were good enough and Hull City were able to record their first win since beating Middlesbrough 2-1 early last month.
The goal was scored in a game of few chances when Bernard Mendy‘s shot was deflected into the path of Richard Garcia who squared it nicely for Daniel Cousin, who turned the ball home from inside the six year area.
Andy Carroll was brought on after 76 minutes for Xisco, who had a decent game, and Carroll almost scored a late equalizer as he bundled a low Duff cross goal wards but the ball trickled wide off a Hull defender.
But the corner came to nothing, as Given had raced up to try to save the day.
This is a big psychological loss for the team because we would have had a home tie with Milwall, but now all we have to concentrate on is the league, and we have to hope we don’t have another relegation fight on our hands.
However, with Ashley still keeping his hands firmly in his pockets as far as transfer money goes, there will be due concern among the Newcastle faithful, that if we can be beaten by Hull City twice at home, that’s the mark of a team who could well be relegated this season.
Since we beat Tottenham, 2-1 at St. James’ Park, we have now lost three and drawn two, and if that doesn’t set alarm bells off at the club, then nothing will.
The good news, if we can call it that, is that this complete capitulation in the cup may scare Mike Ashley just enough for him to give some money to Joe Kinnear to buy some decent players in January.
If he doesn’t he could well own a Championship club come May, and it will be completely his fault, let’s make no mistake about that.

Any owner is better than ours. Even Bolton were given £10 million for Elmander when they needed a center forward. The thing is that it’s not in terms of wealth either. Ashley is still in the top 5 of the richest owners in the premiership but the problem is that he is greedy and a moron. Owners like Randy Lerner can see the sense in investing £9 million in Ashley Young because they know that they are going to make that money back anyway in terms of the success that sound investment in a squad will bring.

Comment #247Hey guys, I’d like to ask you something.
I always get very angry about just thinking about that and it makes me really sad.
Why every English club has to have a owner? It’s just unfair Man City splashing 100M on Kaka. UNFAIR. What do you english people think about that? My opinion is just that it is ruining football.
Clubs have to have sucess for its merit and honor. Also because money doesn’t buy tradition. And suddenly Man City will turn to a small club from a europian giant? Just because petrol money?
And what about tradiotion? History?
Ah, common. It’s unnaceptable. Don’t you think anyone could stop this, because I have also heard that this is an England problem in general, to accept everyone who have big money, no matter where it come from, if it’s dirty or not.
You know, maybe Gordon Brown, Platini or someone to stop that! It can’t go on. I got nervous just to think about it.
Damn it!

Comment #248If Ashley had answered Joe’s call by flying straight up to SJP for the meeting, instead of ‘tele-conferencing, and had put a decent chunk – say 20 million, at Kinnear’s disposal, Joe would have told the papers his boss is the best since sliced bread and Ashley could have taken his seat in the stands tonight to welcome applause, regardless of the result tonight.
That’s what he should have done and for perhaps 10 milllion more than he has apparently offered, he’d have sorted out his relations with the fans who, I’ve no doubt, would have appreciated the gewsture and olive branch.
But he didn’t, did he.

Comment #251Really disappointed, at the moment Owen couldnt score in a brothel. I felt the game was lost in the last 3rd of the field. Their midfield picked up every lose ball and their aggressive attitude upset our midfielders, only Guiterrez showed any real commitment. We didnt move off the ball enough and create space, trying to walk the ball in the net. Our back four played very well and Edgar’s challenge on 10 mins was world class, he slotted in very nicely next to Colocinni and could easily have scored twice. I wouldnt blame anyone for the goal neither. If Carroll had been on from the start his height may have made a difference. Xisco has a lot of work to do to impress the fans.
