Newcastle got off to a bright start in their replay against Hull City tonight but couldn’t make any breakthroughs and the score was still 0-0 at half time.
Newcastle got off nicely and in the first 10 minutes Xisco was involved in a lot of the play and after just 7 minutes he and Michael Owen combined well but the move came to nothing.
After 16 minutes Xisco had the first decent shot when Gutierrez sent in a low cross to the near post and Xisco’s shot went over the crossbar.
Then after 20 minutes it looked like Newcastle had scored. Newcastle got a free kick just out side the area, and Guthrie put in a good free kick right on the head of Nicky Butt. And with goalkeeper Duke beaten, the ball cannoned against the crossbar, and Hull escaped, when it looked like Butt must score.
Doyle and United have a free-kick in a dangerous position. Guthrie whips in to the near post where Butt connects with his head, the keeper is beaten all ends up and everyone is waiting for the net to ripple but instead the ball crash
The game was being played at a fast pace and after about 30 minutes it settled down a little, but it was clear Newcastle were going to fight all the way to somehow get through this tie.
After 34 minutes captain Owen had a half chance when poor communication between McShane and Zayate freed Owen, but his first time volley from the edge of the area flew over the cross-bar.
Phil Dowd played 2 minutes of added time and the half time whistle blew with few clear chances for either side in the first half.
We have to hope that Newcastle can raise their game in the second half and one goal could well do it, as Hull have had problems scoring goals in the last couple of months.
On the plus side, one key for Newcastle is to keep a clean sheet tonight and so far so good as the defense has looked steady under little pressure with Shay Given having a quiet first half.
The last thing we need is extra time becasue the lads could be knackered for the game at Blackburn oin Saturday.
