There are continuing reports that Newcastle United want to get 20 year old midfielder Michael Johnson in from Manchester City.
Michael Johnson – are Newcastle really interested?
First of all this could be yet another made up story, let’s face it but we still hope it’s true. 😀
Michael is an excellent player and the type of lad Newcastle are trying to sign, but we’re not sure City would let him go, and if he is available we think there could be some bigger and more successful clubs after him.
The fee stated is £6M, and for the player he could become that’s a fairly reasonable price, not that Man City need the money, but the The England Under-21 international has had a troubled season at Manchester City, with injuries getting in the way of the significant progress he has made since he made his debut back in 2006.
It is believed Joe Kinnear is keen to add the 20-year-old midfielder to his squad at St James Park, and we think that could be true, but whether Newcastle have any chance of getting him is debatable. although if we could get him Ashley could well cough up the money for such a top youngster.
The news yesterday that City were willing to pay £100M for one player, AC Milan’s Kaka is just astounding, and we’re not sure at all this is good for the game.
After all they just wasted £50M on two players, Jo and Robinho in the summer, when they need to get more good players into the team first, with the vast amounts of money they have available.
Is Kaka a good player, of course he is, one of the best, but hell do nothing to stop the goals City keep leaking.
If you look at the City side right now, they’re not too better off than Newcastle, so why wouldn’t Mark Hughes, who is very good manager and usually down to earth, want to get 5-6 good players in for around £10M each, if they are available, that would vastly improve the side first, before signing world class players, like Kaka?
You need a player like Kaka when you are at the heights of football, like a Man United or Chelsea, when the only way you can really improve the team is by adding world class players.
This is not meant to be a criticism of City, and certainly not their fans, who will obviously be excited at the resources made available by the owners. but why wouldn’t they spend that money first, to tighten up obvious weaknesses the team has shown this season.
We think the new owners are trying to make world-wide headlines by buying these top players, but that’s not the same as building a good solid team first.
Eventually there will need to be some salary cap or something in football, to limit the amount of money that can be paid out by billionaires to make their teams great, if only to level out the playing field a bit, as is done in the US.
Back to Johnson, and if he’s available for £6M, then sign him, but we’d be very surprised if
a) he’s even available and
b) his transfer fee is just £6M.
