Newcastle After German Mario Gomez – Not Bafe Gomis

11:23 am, Friday, January 16th, 2009 by Ed Harrison · 122 Comments

It may be that Newcastle are pursuing German striker Mario Gómez, who they were reportedly interested in during the summer, and not St Etienne striker Bafe Gomis, who they were also interested in, as Newcastle manager dropped a massive hint today.

mario-gomez.jpg

Mario Gomez – 23 year-old 6’3″ German striker

There has been a lot of speculation that we are after St Etienne Bafe Gomis, but Joe gave a big hint this morning when he denied any interest in Bafe saying:

“Right name, wrong club.”

So that could well mean we are after VfB Stuttgart striker Mario Gómez, who is yet  is another player previously watched by the Dennis Wise team, although he was disappointing the European Championships for Germany last summer, but is certainly a big strong lad who should do well in the Premier League, but we wonder how much he’d cost?

Mario Gómez García was born in July 1985 in Riedlingen, Germany and is of German-Spanish descent – his father is a Spaniard from Granada and his mother is German.

Mario Gómez was raised in Unlingen, an Upper Swabian village and elected to play for Germany rather than Spain and played 6 times for the German Under-21 side before being promoted to the full Germany squad.

He made his debut for the full national side last year, and Gomez has now played 20 times for Germany with 6 goals.

Since 2003 he has played 105 times for Stuttgart with an impressive 46 goals, and in 2007 he was named German Footballer of the Year.

What do you think?

Comments welcome.

  • 5 Tom_Toon // Jan 16, 2009 at 11:31 AM

ED – Gomis not Gomez, sounds a lot different!

Gomis is pronounced Go-me and Gomez is pronounced Go-mez, the Brazilian and Portuguese Gomes is pronounced Go-mesh.

i said this in another topic , were not gonna get gomez (german) or the french

f**k me .. kinnears on drugs .. I think Kinnear was asked to go by the fans and he said ..

“go me??” and somebody translated this as a bid of £20 for gomez .. total tripe

  • 11 aus_toon_todd // Jan 16, 2009 at 11:41 AM

we should try and bring in some realistic targets, if spuds sign palacios there must be some dead wood for us to scrap on.. huddlestone, jenas? dont laugh… at least i’am realistic.

  • 12 Fostino // Jan 16, 2009 at 11:41 AM

joe is a joke………………………what he’s been saying in the last few days has been embarressing ‘contacted lucas neill, its serious’ ‘loan sigings should be AOK in 48 hours’ ‘hopefully have some for blackburn’ when explaining m’bia ’6.2 cameroon’, wait till you sign him joe to compare him to viera!! and now the latest this week ‘right name, wrong club’ …….it’s ridiculous!!

  • 13 pdidy // Jan 16, 2009 at 11:42 AM

  • 15 HalftimeBovril // Jan 16, 2009 at 11:46 AM

I would save your fingers if I were you Ed. There’s not much point in writing all these articles as we have absolutely zero chance of signing any of these players, which is even if we have actually made any bids, which I very much doubt it.

From KK saying absolutely zip about our transfer targets last summer to JFK spouting off every 5 mins about the next tom dick or harry’dez we are supposedly after.

What’s happened to all the news that we are after B Ferguson, can’t believe anything that comes out of this guys mouth any more.

  • 27 TheToonKing // Jan 16, 2009 at 11:54 AM

    ahaahhahahahahhahah funny

We are looking (dreaming) of the right players but until Ashley understands that 4-5 Mil will only get us Huddlestone’s and Bullards, these players are worth double that.

We won’t get anywhere like this .

Ashley : hey Alex how much is C.Ronaldo worth
    Ferguson : Well, 100Mil.
Ashley : Okay Alex then i will bid 50M , shake hands on it Alex mate ??
Ferguson : F**k off you fat greedy w*nker.

I reckon this is our negotiation policy .

Can’t wait to sign Quashie !!!!

  • 28 aus_toon_todd // Jan 16, 2009 at 11:54 AM

we shouldn’t have pushed alladyce, although i dont think he would ever have been the answer, he probably deserved more than he got.

  • 40 aus_toon_todd // Jan 16, 2009 at 12:09 PM

santa cruz and dunn, the two players they struggle without. bollucks! maybe the better news is kaka might play his first game v us!? no??

  • 41 Timmers // Jan 16, 2009 at 12:12 PM

Where are all these links coming from. We are linked with more players than any other club, which i believe is done on purpose by some sources. It raises fans expectations or rather starts spurious gossip. Fact is we are in a relegation fight so thats the standard of players unfortunatley we will be looking at.

We all deep down knew we’d prob get 3 players in prob all in on loan, poss one permenant. Along with a couple of youth players. My worry is the other clubs in the relegation zone are spending Tottenham, Man City,Stoke, West Brom. If we are not financially stronger than 2 of those then we are in dire straights.

As for Man City well if they do pay the reported 17 squllion for Kaka i am glad they did not buy us. As it is the same problem-the manager is not buying the players. How can you go from Wayne Bridge (over priced) to Kaka. Mental.

Funds need to be released to kinnear but Ashley is holding out as he know Kinnear is not the future-but he must save the present!
As for Kinnear naming and hint dropping again as i’ve said before i disagree with this. Its the Same as Harry Redknapp it unsettles ppl and leads to accusations and bidding wars we cant win.
    Moan over!

(2 more youth players, and 3 permenant 1st teamers please! this is realistic) loan signings argentinian-Messi
itallian-Totti thats what i heard lol

  • 42 aus_toon_todd // Jan 16, 2009 at 12:13 PM

i’m going to bed, maybe i’ll wake up to the news we have signed gomis, gomez, m’bia, chiellini and ramos?

steven finnan, whoop whoop ha ha

  • 83 Californication // Jan 16, 2009 at 12:35 PM

It is not exactly what we are looking for, but if the Finnan rumour is indeed true, it will certainly be a decent addition to the squad. Let’s face it, with Beye out we need a player proven in that area, not throwing Taylor in there as a makeshift.

  • 84 Kevin Nichol // Jan 16, 2009 at 12:35 PM

DJG…M8 he’s better than playing a young centre back out of position for the next 10 weeks! Right now we cant be choosy and need players with experience who will keep us in the premier league! It’s not ideal but needs must; lets get throught to the end of the season and hopefully rebuild from there!

    Keep the faith….

  • 85 Tom_Toon // Jan 16, 2009 at 12:36 PM

He was released from his contract at liverpool why?

They still have Hyppia who is 36/37 or something.

The answer is in the last few year he have been very injury prone and lost virtually all his pace.

You guys are thinking of when he played for liverpool 5/6 seasons ago.

He is nothing like that now. But look where Liverpool are in the league. Another piece of good business. We should try and learn from them. Not go opposite to them.

  • 113 RyanToon // Jan 16, 2009 at 12:56 PM

ramon calderon has left real madrid, perhaps hell come to us ha ha

  • 114 Stuart79 // Jan 16, 2009 at 12:59 PM

I’m sorry and I know I’m being slightly premature saying this but every other club are signing players left, right and centre but we are just making ridiculous statements thataren’t even true!

This winsow will be a disaster for the club and for the fans!

To say I’m underwhelmed is a understatement!

Tom_Toon… You give JFK to much credit there. He could surely mean Gomez, its not like he is the most educated of managers.

  • 116 pubcat // Jan 16, 2009 at 1:34 PM

It could be that we’re after Swansea’s Bafetimbi Jones?

  • 117 Doocey // Jan 16, 2009 at 4:02 PM

Or maybe its Morgaro Gomis for Dundee lol!

Still liked to be linked with these though :D

Yeah, y`all complain about Joe and who he wants to sign etc. etc.
Fact is y`all love this time of year and the summer window too.
I`m beggining to think the speculation and all it implies is of more interest to those who post here than actually watching games.
Doubt if there`s one among you who does`nt think he could do a better job as a recruiter or manager than any of our late managers except perhaps Sir Bobby.
    But it`s allways entertaining !

Sorry – but its becoming obvious that Joe’s been employed to carry on the good work of blowing smoke rings up our backsides on the prospect of new signings……….we ain’t getting anybody….lets be honest…..and the way he’s conducting himself in the press is embarrassing!!…..naming “signings” and bigging the up in the press (nearest thing to Vieira!!!) …….what happened to conducting business in private then revealing the new signings when they are actually in the bag?
No…I’m afraid we are being fed the usual BS and no doubt if we can survive for a few years with what we have or what we can pick up for free then some of these young players might come good …..who knows? Just don’t know how we’ll survive if the crowds keep dropping
