There is news coming out of Spain right now that Hull target Steve Finnan is set to become Joe Kinnear’s first signing, after his club Espanyol accepted a bid of £1.3M from Newcastle United today.
Steve Finnan – on way to Newcastle?
Reports in the English press have been saying that 32 year-old Steve would sign for Hull City, but apparently Espanyol have not accepted the terms offered by The Tigers, and have today accepted an improved offer from Joe Kinnear and Newcastle. and we think this a good short term deal for Newcastle for a very experienced full back.
Joe Kinnear has been scouting the league looking for an experienced right-back to step-in in place of the injured Habib Beye, and Steve Finnan seems to fit the bill perfectly. But of course Steve had tremendous experience in the Premier League with Liverpool, and can play in either full back position, and we think, even though he’s 32 years old now, that he will be a good acquisition to the squad for that money.
Espanyol’s decision came after being dissatisfied with Hull`s proposal to pay the transfer fee in installments, over a full three years, which is the major reason they seemed to have pulled the plug.
Steve is still a good player and of course played for Kevin Keegan at Fulham FC where he played 173 times with 6 goals, and he was a Newcastle target under Bobby Robson before moving to Liverpool in 2003, and we had hoped at the time that Bobby would have brought him to Newcastle at that time.
Steve, who was born in Limerick, Ireland, played 145 times for Liverpool before moving to Espanyol in the summer, and he will no doubt be delighted if he moves to Tyneside.
We think this is accurate news, and don’t be surprised if Steve is thrust into the team at left-back tomorrow at Blackburn. Steve Finnan reminds us of the way Joe Kinnear used to play full back for Spurs – a good compact and safe full-back, who doesn’t give much away – and of course Steve is Irish too.
In short – we think this is a decent short term move for the club, as he can play at left or right full back, and we’re rather impressed Joe and Dennis have moved so quickly to tie the deal up.
Comments welcome.

Comment #41That’s why we are not spending any money.
Ashley isn’t wealthy enough anymore to own a football club.
Although spending doesn’t guarentee anything Mark Hughes has spent £85m this season and look where they are?

Comment #46I reckon Joe said he’d walk if he wasn’t backed as he’s sick of the spin and feet dragging.
He’s being open to force the club to deliver on its promises such as a statement after the window closes, and that Ash is backing him.
Ash being a compulsive gambler probably means that he’ll gamble by spending nowt and hoping to still survive.
He should realise that he can’t take the money with him and with his drinking and weight you would not expect a long life span, so do some good for a change instead of gladly spending on gambling(what a donkey on that alleged bank bet that an amateur would be ashamed of),casinos, drink etc. His kid looks as though he’s on the wrong weight path as well.
I’m sure Ash reads this blog so the bell has rung and we await deeds to follow words.

He is still one of the richest owners in the premiership. Randy Lerner is worth £750 million and look how much he has backed O’Neill. It’s not that he isn’t rich enough but that he likes put all his spare does in the tin labelled beer money.

To buy the club, players wages and fees, new management etc. will probably cost them £1billion !!!!!! if they are going to spend big to try to entice the Harlem Globetrotters of football.
Total madness.

Comment #77Questions for the Mr Ashley
cc Dennis [un]Wise and Derek Llambias:
How is it that Man U can announce two big money signings, out of the blue on day 1 of the window?
Why is it that having made a near bollocks of transfers last year (KK, squad need strengthened, remember?) the club’s on course to repeat the farce and be potentially relegated?
What’s the Director of ffffff Football for?
Is he doing his job well?
If not, why do you persist with him?

Comment #78Ashley at least give the club 25m what the fcuk do u expect joe to with 10m. I haven’t got it but for someone to talk about they ” love this club” and say “They want the best for this club” and “I know I’ve made mistakes” you don’t learn from them. You are one tight S.O.B. Me and every NU supporters are sick of Joe saying “We put in a bid for this or that person but”. In the world of football what the hell do you expect him to do with 10m.You say when you brought the club you didnt read the books, at the time you was a billionaire and your trying to tell everyone you had no lawyers advising you during the whole process. Your worth 800m what 25m hopefully it will benfit you. We all know you are going to use the credit crunch as a excuse but you have been tight since Sam brought his crap when he was manger (Your plan to get us to like you). But you show as the real you.
