Newcastle Need An In-Form Alan Smith Through May

We half expected Alan Smith to be leaving Newcastle United in January, but it’s hard to unload a player who hasn’t been fit since last August.

Alan Smith – training again after Achilles injury

But with the squad in so much difficulty these days with injuries, and Alan being very experienced, it’s good news he may be ready for the Manchester City game a week on Wednesday.

Alan’s a good lad, and always tries his best for Newcastle United, and he also seems to love it at the club and in Newcastle, and it’s important to say that up front.

But Alan has not shown anything like his best form, in  the 18 months he’s been on Tyneside, and still has to score his first senior goal at the club.

But looking on the bright side, maybe Joe Kinnear , who seems to admire the capabilities of the player, can get the very best out of Alan.

We certainly need an Alan Smith at his best in the next five months, if we are to avoid the drop.

The 28-year-old returned to training earlier this month, and he was one of the players, along with Joey Barton, who took part in the full-scale practice match against Carlisle United at Newcastle’s Benton HQ this afternoon, which ended in a 1-1 draw.

This will have given Alan and Joey some additional match practice to get them more fully fit.

Presumably we should be hearing form Kinnear on whether he has decided to take free agent Peter Lovenkrands, and what he wants to do with the two loan signings, whoever they are.

If there are no complications in the next week with Smith’s return, he could very well make the squad for the visit to Manchester City a week tomorrow.

Manager Joe Kinnear said:

“We hope to give Smithy some time on the pitch today,”

“He’s been out of action for a long time, and he’s the only player that hasn’t been available to me.”

“It’s good for him to get back out there and get some action.”

“He’s been putting in a lot of hard work behind the scenes, and been trying to get back to fitness.”

Alan will be staying at Newcastle until at least the summer, so let’s hope he can show us some of his best form – we certainly need some of our players to come through big time – if we are going to survive in the Premier League come May.

And it could be that we have an expanded squad for the game with Manchester City, since Barton and Smith could be available, plus a fit Jose Enrique.

We could also have the two loan players, the identities of which we still don’t know, plus a mysterious defender Joe is apparently hoping to sign by this Friday, and Danish International free agent Peter Lovekrands.

And the late breaking news that we have bid for Kaka of AC Milan is just not true.  😀

Well – we have to try to keep this thing light – wishing and hoping.

Comments welcome.

Not to sure that he will be after this transfer window, hes on high wages and Mike wants to get rid of the highearners. Shouldnt be to surprised if all players will be avalible last day of the transferwindow, like they were in the summer!

Alan – thanks – I updated the piece – presumably Joe will announce shortly whether we are taking Lovenkrands.

no mention of the potential loan signings in the match. Obviously they were never gonna name names, but it would have been nice if they’d told us whether the two supposed players actually featured in the game!!

The match report was very disappointing. No mention of who else played in the game (the 4-5 young trialists), no mention of how Lovenkrands did/if he lasted the 90, no mention of who else filled the XI, nothing!

Good to see Baeton played the 90 though.

There has been no confirmation as to whether Smith did or did not take part in the trial match.

Oh come on!!! Smith is a has been who has quite obviously been touted around by Wise and his Evil Empire.

We’re in trouble and I’m honestly starting to believe Ashley is willing to take a hit on his investment just to get one over on Newcastle Utd. I dunno maybe he’s had a grudge against us since the 1999 F.A Cup Semi Final when we dumped his beloved Spuds out the cup

We could also put in a bid for Fred who is available on a free transfer!

I know boys like Appiah and Fred would command significant wages, but come on, these are QUALITY players, and if they are fit (Fred definetly IS), sign them up on some sort of pay-as-you-play deal, short-term with view to long-terms, or something. I would prefer 1½-year deals with an automatic extension to 2½ and 3½ if they have played 20 games or more or something performance-related like that.

Regardless, if we are strapped for cash, get these guys in and sell Geremi, Butt, Smith, Duff, Cacapa etc. who are pulling massive wages but contributing very little..

Smith and Barton in the middle at one point wouldn’t have been ideal but we weren’t having to scrap up until 4 months ago. Lets face it can we rely on Ashley to bring anyone better in. The last 5 games we have been lacking in steel and commitment and those 2 will surely bring that onto the pitch. I am far from a fan of Alan Smith, how could anyone be but if we have to kick our way out of trouble then he ma not be bad option when fit.

Need Smith? For what? We already have a usless player picking up loads of bookings in Butt, two of that kind is one too many.

Sell him to Boro, 3m and I’ll personally drive him down there.

hope he comes good, he’s certainly got the spirit necessary for a dog fight. Zog’s could certainly learn a thing or two from him. Smudger is undoubtedly a better proposition than Butt in the centre of the park and competition for places is good for the sake of the club

Any idea who the loanee’s are?

Cant belive that people want Smith out of Toon. I can totaly agree that he hasnt played well for us and need to start play as he gets paid but with a paperthin squad already and no players comming in it would be madness to sell the players we got.

We’ll sign no one any good in January get relegated & sell our best players in the summer. Then we’ll be in the Championship for a long, long time. As Fraser from Dad’s Army would say “We’re Doomed, Doomed”

Fred for free sounds good to me but hasn’t been linked to us but who knows, has been a good player over the years!! I have never seen where Smith fits in but am prepared to give him one last chance see if he can find some form! We need all the players we can get at the minute, so unless someone offers decent money (at least £3m) for him then lets keep him for now!

There was talk about a swedish U21 player as well but maybe there was a mix up and the finnish guy showed up instead. Been reading the papers to found out if there was any swedes in toon for a trial.

The only thing I could find was that a swedish U21 player named Mikael Lustig, a defender who plays for Rosenborg in Norway who denied that he was going on a trial at West Ham. This does NOT mean that he is comming to Toon for a trial. Dont want to start a rumour on my own as I think we had enough of rumours already..

Model pro who has had a poor time since he joined us….I do however hope the lad gets back to somewhere near his best as he is a good player….

I know alot of lads and lasses on here dont like him and thats fair enough as their entitled to there opinion, however when/if he gets back into the side, please back the lad as he gives nowt but 110% for the cause…and thats exactly what we need in this situation…I have backed him since he came to the club and will continue to do so aslong as his gives 110% commitment….The way we crumbled after the 1st goal on Saturday tells me we need as many fighters as we can muster…

oh and by the way, if anyone thinks he is gonna be sold in the transfer window, think again…I bumped into him last summer on a night out and had a bit crack…Asked him if he wanted to stay and he said he loved the place and wanted to stay and fight for his place up front. He said he didnt mind playing in midfield as it was to fill in for the team but he didnt feel he was doing himself justice…He wanted to play upfront but fully expected a front 3 of Viduka, Owen and Martins…The only way he expected to get in was through injuries…

Time to step up to the plate sonna and prove your doubters wrong…Top Lad

Those calling for Nile Ranger : Lad needs bedding in….not thrown into a relegation dogfight….if we didnt have others who could play upfront then yes…
