There is news in the Daily Mail this morning that Manchester City may now increase their £9M offer they made for Shay Given over the weekend.
Michael Johnson – this player plus £9M may be too good to turn down
The new news today, and we have no idea if there is any truth to this, is that they may add Michael Johnson into the proposed deal for the Newcastle goalkeeper.
But Joe Kinnear is said to be keen on capturing Michael Johnson, the 20 year-old midfield player, who has been hampered by injury this season, and if they throw Johnson in the deal, that could raise the price they are offering for Given to around £15M. with Johnson worth around £6M in the transfer market.
And as that price continues to rise, expect Newcastle at some point to agree to the deal, since every player has their price, and Manchester City are probably positioned better than any club on the planet right now, to offer silly money for Given, and we should probably take it, once the price offered gets silly enough.
Steve Harper is more than capable of filling in for Given through the end of the season and we also have two excellent 20 year-old goalkeepers in Fraser Forster and Tim Krul, who can fill the substitutes bench.
So if indeed this offer is true, we’d be surprised if Joe Kinnear didn’t reassess the situation because he will then get £9M to spend, plus a very good youngster in Michael Johnson, when the lad is fully fit.
And of course not only would we get Michael, but Joe could go out and get both Stephane Mbia and Adil Rami, who would probably cost us around £16M for the pair, after some decent negotiating down – of the price their clubs want for them.
And add another £1.8M to the transfer cash for Geremi to Besitkas, to the £10M Joe gets from Ashley, and Joe will still have £5.8M to spend on additional players, and would be in a good position.
Of course this all assumes the report is true about Given.
