There are reports today that Newcastle United are expected to put in a bid for 27 year-old Atalanta striker Sergio Floccari for £15M, within the next 24 hours.
Sergio Floccari – why would Newcastle pay £15M for this player?
Sportmediaset says Atalanta are expecting an offer of around £15M for their Italian international to arrive from Newcastle either today or Thursday.
But although the report seems genuine, we cannot imagine that Newcastle have £15M to spend for one thing, and would hardly blow that amount on a striker, when other positions, like in central midfield and defense need filling with a lot more priority.
That kind of deal would be one Freddy Shepherd would have made – a trophy signing we just don’t need.
Atalanta president Alessandro Ruggeri is prepared to sell Floccari for the right price, but had planned to wait until June.
However, the report says that with Newcastle’s imminent offer being far far better than any other rival bid, Ruggeri knows now may be the time to cash in on the player.
Flocarri has played 50 times for Atalanta since 2007 and scored 16 goals, since moving there from Messina.
We have no idea how he thinks Newcastle are willing to spend that type of money on a forward, but wherever he is getting this news from, we suggest he check out the source, because it’s 99% certain that no deal will be arriving from Newcastle United, we can assure him of that.
