Newcastle Offered Turkish International Center Half

News today that Newcastle United have been offered the chance to sign Turkish international defender Gökhan Zan on loan until the end of the season.

Gokhan Zan – Turkish International center-half – in black and white stripes

The 27 year old Besiktas center-back, who stands 6’4″ tall, has been offered to Premiership clubs by his Besitkas club, and the Greek club is ready to let the player go in January.

Besitkas wanted to sell the player in January, but they would also be willing to agree to a loan spell first, prior to a deal being done in the summer.

That has attracted Newcastle United, although Joe Kinnear is still looking at other targets who he feels could be better players for the club.

Joe had said he hoped to sign a new defender soon, so we’ll have to wait and see who that is.

Glasgow Celtic are also keen to offload their experienced center-half 33 year-old Bobo Baldé to Newcastle, and the 6’3″ French-born Guinean professional, who has played over 160 times for Celtic, is out of contract with Celtic at the end of the season.

The Scottish club have even said they may be willing to let him leave on a free transfer now, so that they can get him off the wage bill at the Scottish club. Manager Walter Smith must still reduce the wage bill at Rangers within the next 9 days.

Joe Kinnear must be confident of his other targets if he is to turn his back on Gökhan Zan, but we better make some signings soon, and not leave things to the last day or two, because then disasters can then happen – as we seem to keep proving.

Comments welcome.

    5 days til Man Citey
    9 days til Mackems
    10 days til window closes.

1 signing, financially in the poop and the natives are getting restless.

Loads of FA cup action to take my mind of us this weekend.

Super – that was my thinking and he iss 33, which falls outside the transfer remit.

Come on JFk, Wise & whoever. Do us proud this weekend and get someone in. (laughs)

Balde is 33, Zan is 27 (although your right, its still outside the transfer remit.

Right now, I would be happy if we brought in one central midfielder (preferably defensively minded to play alongside Barton) and one left back, preferably Raitala.

Have seen the Owen to Villa rumours today and can honestly believe it.

It is very much O’Niells style to wait until the end of the window to place his bids.

A 5 million bid for Owen would be tempting, but here at Newcastle we will be so under prepared for the outcome it could be disasterous……could you imagine another panic last minute buy like Xisco ?

Come on lads, no one has been as down or as mad as me over the last few weeks, I even cancelled my season ticket direct debit the day after Hull defeat. Now however I am beginning to see the light and hopeful somehow we can avoid the drop and maybe push on next year. I have been living in hope for most of my life and suppose I will continue to do so for the rest of it. i am sure we will get new owners in the summer.

The Owen situation needs watching closely. Look where Villa are in the table. The right money will tempt Wise rather than lose Owen for free at the end of the season, especially as Owen will have his sights on Europe next season.
We are being shafted from above and below.
I agree – this is a typical O’Neill ploy vis a vis our board e.g., Milner!

This article from the Journal also says we had to sit by and watch Hull sign Bullard as we wouldn’t compete with them in terms of fee and wages!

    Great!

Least we know our place in the football pyrimid!

Zan is a decent defender, bring him in as cover for Bassong and Coloccini.

Bullard is not that good anyway, Barton and Guthrie are at least at his level, so please stop sulking about not signing him.

If we get Mbia, we have a far better player than Bullard, and he’s 8 years younger as well.

I dont mean to criticise Eds writing, but he says Balde is at Celtic, then says Walter Smith needs to reduce Rangers wage bill. Balde is another Bramble anyway, sometimes solid, then wooop mistake!

Is this Turskish guy the centre back from euro 2008. If so, he is the most no nonsense defender i have ever seen, but he impressed me, if it is him. If you do a step over in front of this guy, your on your backside.

I dont believe this is the sort of signing kinnear will make. The club is in a relegation battle and doesnt need unproven defenders. I think the club missed out massively on not signing hunt, heskey and bullard. battlers that would have given there all.

What happened during the trip to France? Bodies in or not we cannot accept cast-offs who we cannot unload at a later date. Balde is to old and the Turk is unknown. We must not let these gobbets of gossip divert us from an Owen dirty being done behind the scenes.

Balde is worse than useless. Makes Titus look like Beckenbauer. If you think Taylor dives in too easily, this guy is 10 times worse!

If we sign him, we are fecked!

As a Turk my opinion on Zan is that

He’s no better than Bassong and Colo but miles better than Taylor.

My overall opinion, he would be a good signing but we need Cm’s and Lb’s If you want a Turkish CB we should definately go for the Turkish monster,

    Servet Cetin!

Owen would only be a bit part player for Villa. Agbonlahor/Carew/Heskey would easily get in ahead of him.

And clubs simply just do NOT let good players just go.

I want this Viera CM, please please just get an enforcer in the centre of midfield.

And SIGN THESE TRIALISTS!! If they’re as good as they’re hyped up to be and chased by big clubs then they must be good, plus they’ll be cheap!!

I saw Zan playing with Turkey in the european championships. He’s a very big lump (around 6’3″ / 6 ‘4″) and a decent CB. Would be very useful if something happened to Colo / Bassong.

Balde is absolutly shocking like. We’re in trouble if he comes anywhere near us, that will show the position we’re in and its a depressing one if true.

    @Turkish Magpie

ED lives in America now so maybe their geographical ignorance is contagious 😛

I’d definitely bring him in, probably low enough wages as makes no difference, very useful squad member and move Taylor to RB back-up where he is better suited.

Nobody can claim we have too many players at the minute! 🙁
