Tottenham Hotspur In For Shay Given

There is news today that Tottenham Hotspur want to beat Manchester City and land Newcastle’s Ireland goalkeeper Shay Given.

Shay Given – Newcastle’s world class goalkeeper wanted by Spurs?

This is news from the Daily Mirror so take it with a huge pinch of salt, but Harry Redknapp still needs to bring an a goalkeeper to replace Brazilian Gomez, who just doesn’t look the part in the Premier league.

Apparently Man City have already bid £8M, but that’s probably above the £6M second bid from Eastlands that has been widely reported.

Man City say they will not overpay for players, but when you bid 100M for one player – give me a break – please.

So we’re hoping that Man City will make a stupid bid for Given, because then the Newcastle club would find it hard to turn down.

We don’t want to lose Given but anywhere in the range of 14M would be very hard for the club to turn down for a 32 year –old goalkeeper, especially when we have local lad Steve Harper as a ready made replacement, and we need to let one of these top goalkeepers go otherwise we’ll probably see Tim Krul leave the club in the summer. For pastures anew.

Apparently Brazilian keeper Heurelho Gomes now wants to return to the Dutch Eredivisie, with his old club PSV Eindhoven ready to pay £5M to Spurs for his services. That would be an honorable way out for Gomes, who makes too many mistakes to be a top level goalkeeper.

The news is that Daniel Levy and his representatives are preparing a bid for the Irishman.

The Arab billionaires of City have been a little silly in their bids for world-class Given, when you consider they paid a whopping £14M for West Ham’s Craig Bellamy, who is lucky to be fit for half a season every year, and the same amount for Chelsea’s reserve team left-back Wayne Bridge.

Neither player is worth that amount, and they’d be lucky to be worth even half the amount, which would nevertheless be closer to their real value.

The news that midfielder Jamie O’Hara could be included as part of the package from Tottenham is especially interesting, since this lad looks like a winner, and even scored against Newcastle when they won 2-1 in the Carling Cup earlier in the season.

Whether he would want to come to Tyneside is of course another matter, since we’re hardly the club we once were when Bobby Robson was managing things on Tyneside.  That’s before Freddy Shepherd and Douglas Hall sacked Bobby, for finishing in 5th place in the Premier  League – after previous seasons of being 3rd and 4th respectively – just not good enough.   🙁

We are so unbalanced right now as far as players go, that we need defenders and central midfield players, but on the other hand we are very well off in the goalkeeper spot.

And it’s because of that reasoning that we think a big bid for Given, could be accepted by Newcastle, although we’d still be sorry to see Given, the best goalkeeper Newcastle have ever had, leave the club.

What do you think?

I rate Bale very highly, just not hitting it off at Spurs.

O’Hara is a central midfielder who can play LB and LM.

I’d understand if he went to City, but I’d be a little bemused if he went to Tottenham. City could be on the way up, with the money they have. Tottenham are like us though, seem to underperform a great deal, albeit with a better squad than us.

I’ve said earlier i dont know much about O’Hara, but i do like the look of Huddlestone.

Hes a presence and a real handful in the middle, not to mention young and English.

Would be happy with him too, then buy Barnes and reunite the pair.

    Huddlestone a handfull!?!?

The boy is 6f 3 or w/e and scared of player 5ft 4! He is scared of tackling and is probably the laziest centre mid in the prem, shame because he has a world class passing range.

Oh, it even could make sense once Redknapp told there were no bids regarding Chelsea’s Cudicini.

And also Juventus’ Buffon seems to be open to offers, and ManCity has already shown huge interest in the goalie.

By the way, I’d rather O’Hara than the troubling Michael Johnson.

    Let’s wait and see…

By the way, as I posted in other thread, brazilian paper ‘O Lance’ published Fabio, Cruzeiro’s goalkeeper, is on his way to Newcastle.

But that could be just made up.

Given loves Newcastle as a club and as a city, and has never directly come out and said he wnats to leave, apart from a few murmers from his lawyer.

If Given leaves it will only be to either Arsenal, Man Utd, Chelsea or Liverpool, and maybe Villa.
Arsenal don’t seem to want him, and none of the rest need him.

Shay will only leave if he gets an offer that will seriously boost his career and chances of winning silverware. Neither Spurs or Man City can offer him that, and thats why i believe he wont leave, and will finish his career here.

The whole idea of Given leaving was to get to a club with bigger ambitions than we can match in these days, so him leaving for Spurs wouldnt make much sense… I think Citeh will get him.

£45m from City would whet the appetite alright. City won’t over pay for players?!
Wayne Bridge is the highest fuck*ng paid defender in the world ffs!

I indeed believe Fabio could be looking for european football whatsoever, also because his last season in Cruzeiro was his best in the club, when he established himself in the game here.

But it’s another matter whether if the Newcastle board is interested in him or not.

A good goalie is hard to find especiall one as good as Shea.
Yeah, Johnson @ Man. C. is decent, O`Hara is more to our need, a hard nosed CM who is not afraid to put his foot in , can pass and get the occasional goal but ……..
Rather have Sissoko, the two Portuguese, Veloso and Moutinho, Mbia or Appiah in that role.
Sure it sounds like we could get a nice piece of change for Shea, but why do you think people are willing to pay that kind of money, a great goalie is hard to find whereas midfielders are a dime a dozen, think about it.
    Personally I hope he stays.

Good goalies are easy to find, Shay isn’t a good goalkepeer, he is a brilliant shot-stopper but poor goalkeeper IMO.
