There is news today that Tottenham Hotspur want to beat Manchester City and land Newcastle’s Ireland goalkeeper Shay Given.
Shay Given – Newcastle’s world class goalkeeper wanted by Spurs?
This is news from the Daily Mirror so take it with a huge pinch of salt, but Harry Redknapp still needs to bring an a goalkeeper to replace Brazilian Gomez, who just doesn’t look the part in the Premier league.
Apparently Man City have already bid £8M, but that’s probably above the £6M second bid from Eastlands that has been widely reported.
Man City say they will not overpay for players, but when you bid 100M for one player – give me a break – please.
So we’re hoping that Man City will make a stupid bid for Given, because then the Newcastle club would find it hard to turn down.
We don’t want to lose Given but anywhere in the range of 14M would be very hard for the club to turn down for a 32 year –old goalkeeper, especially when we have local lad Steve Harper as a ready made replacement, and we need to let one of these top goalkeepers go otherwise we’ll probably see Tim Krul leave the club in the summer. For pastures anew.
Apparently Brazilian keeper Heurelho Gomes now wants to return to the Dutch Eredivisie, with his old club PSV Eindhoven ready to pay £5M to Spurs for his services. That would be an honorable way out for Gomes, who makes too many mistakes to be a top level goalkeeper.
The news is that Daniel Levy and his representatives are preparing a bid for the Irishman.
The Arab billionaires of City have been a little silly in their bids for world-class Given, when you consider they paid a whopping £14M for West Ham’s Craig Bellamy, who is lucky to be fit for half a season every year, and the same amount for Chelsea’s reserve team left-back Wayne Bridge.
Neither player is worth that amount, and they’d be lucky to be worth even half the amount, which would nevertheless be closer to their real value.
The news that midfielder Jamie O’Hara could be included as part of the package from Tottenham is especially interesting, since this lad looks like a winner, and even scored against Newcastle when they won 2-1 in the Carling Cup earlier in the season.
Whether he would want to come to Tyneside is of course another matter, since we’re hardly the club we once were when Bobby Robson was managing things on Tyneside. That’s before Freddy Shepherd and Douglas Hall sacked Bobby, for finishing in 5th place in the Premier League – after previous seasons of being 3rd and 4th respectively – just not good enough. 🙁
We are so unbalanced right now as far as players go, that we need defenders and central midfield players, but on the other hand we are very well off in the goalkeeper spot.
And it’s because of that reasoning that we think a big bid for Given, could be accepted by Newcastle, although we’d still be sorry to see Given, the best goalkeeper Newcastle have ever had, leave the club.
What do you think?
