Given Likely To Move To Eastlands Next Week

There seems to be a number of news sources today that are suggesting it’s almost a done deal that Shay Given will move to Manchester City next week.

Shay Given – preponderance of news saying it’s a done at Man City

So it does seem, according to several news reports today, that Newcastle United goalkeeper Shay Given is ready to join Manchester City.

A source close to Given, 32, told the Daily Star on Sunday:

‘‘Shay wants to go to City and as far as he is concerned, his deal is effectively agreed in terms of the wages he’d be paid and even his image rights.”

‘‘He could double his pay to £100,000-a-week and sign a contract for three-and-a-half or four-and-a-half years.”

And if Given does go, it will depend on what kind of deal Newcastle will get for their most loyal player, as to whether it’s looked on positively by the Newcastle faithful.

If we can get around £10M for him in cash or players, most Newcastle fans would probably think that was an OK deal, given the position we are in, since Steve Harper would be more than ready to take over the goalkeeping role through the end of the season.

And it would mean that Tim Krul would see a future for himself at the Newcastle club and would not want to leave in the summer.

If we can get Michael Johnson or Nedum Onuoha in part exchange that would be good too, but the last thing we want to happen is to get say £10M for Shay, and then not being to spend that money on new players in January.

That would be similar to what we did when we sold James Milner to Aston Villa with just 5 days of the summer transfer window left.

Let’s hope we have learned from our mistakes.

Comments welcome.

10-12 million for Given, in players preferably plus cash, would be very good business for us, and for him.

Sell him as long as we get some players in exchange, i don’t know why the club are being linked with keepers to replace him! Harper, Krul and Forster are brilliant keepers!

I would be gutted to see Given go but if we can get ten million for him OR Johnson and Nedum Onuoha i wouldn’t be to concerned. Why can NUFC not say 5 million for Given plus the two players ,that would seem a little more of a deal for both clubs.

I’ve said it before and will say it again,
Given has been a loyal servant for us, and I wouldn’t begrudge him a move; he desrves his bit of success.
I just hope Man City turn out to be the biggest flops and continue to fail as a team.
Anyways…. I just hope we get a few inspired signings and show some passion on the field; especially against Sunderland.
    Bye for now lads.

Nah, Jo has been an utter flop. Given for Johnson and Onouha, or Johnson/onouha plus 6 million.

People presume Harps will stay if Given goes because it’ll mean he’ll get game time, he’ll be no.1. But has anyone considered that maybe Harper wants to go for the same reason Given wants to leave..because he’s sick shit of the place.

straight swap Onuoha , Johnson and sturridge for Given . That would not be too bad a deal , Whatever deal is going to be , it will be announced after the game on wednesday . The club would not want Given playing against us in his first game after leaving us .

Any swap has to involve players who can strengthen our weakest areas, i.e. defensive/central midfield and the full backs.

Tom….I guarantee you that Jo is not a flop, give him a good run and you’ll see what he’s capable off.

MH is an idiot for not playing him, trust me….if Sven was still the manager at City.he would have been one of the top scorers in the league by now.

So, if we sell Given to City for 10 million that would give JK 20 million pounds to spend in a few days what with already having the money from Ashley and the money from the Given sale????

Jo was outstanding in Russia, I will give you that, but he has yet to prove he can do it over here. Admittedly he hasnt had the time to adapt yet, but from what I have seen, I haven’t been that impressed really.

I DONT like the idea of getting Cash only on this.

Look what happened with milner, SAME thing will happen.

It HAS to be a player part ex.

AT LEAST 1 if not 2 players

As has already been said: Johnson, Onouha, or Sturidge. All young, Low Wages and Lots of Potential.

    COME ON!!!

Now that the deal seems imminent, I’m absolutley gutted. We may have Harper who is a great keeper and two talented young keepers in Forester and Krul, but I feel I’ll never get over losing Shay to City… If we were the club we all want us to be, Shay would grow old at Toon and play in his testimonial match in 5-6 years time…

And now it seems we are going to flog him so we could bring a couple of mercenaries in. And if we get relegated, they’d be all out the door…

What a shitty situation to be in.

If any of you lads are going to Manchester next week, please do me a favour and sing your hearts out…

Watch Roberto Mancini or the Special One next season…….you’ll see a different player in him.

MH can’t handle Man City and thats a fact,he’s competely lost overthere.

Seems very strange that the Given move is so close to the end of the window therefore very little time to bring players in so the money ends up in Mr Ashleys pocket again.

It makes no sense to let Given go so close to the transfer deadline unless there’s a few players coming the other direction. Wise and his useless helpers will never be able to bring in new players for the funds raised from Given’s departure, so it has to be a swap-deal.

    Out -> Given
In -> Johnson, Onouha and Ball.

I’d prefer Elano or Jo instead of Ball, but that’s unrealistic. Anyway, Ball is experienced and will be a good competitor to the wobbly spaniard. I’m worried about playing Harper as he’s a poor mans Given, I’d actually give young Tim Krul a go. He’s extremely talented.

If Given has any love for the club, he will do the right thing at all points, for the club.
If hes off, go quickly, to allow us to use the cash, stay & stop whining.
Sad, but this has got to stop dragging out.

I get the impression that City offered a player plus cash deal last week but that NUFC are holding out for cash only. As others have already pointed out the fee for Given will go the same way as the Milner money, straight into Ashley’s back pocket with precisely nothing left for new players. We’ve completed the distinctly underwhelming signing Lovenkrands and that’s out lot. The only transfer activity involving NUFC before 2nd Feb will be outgoing, with Barton, N’Zogbia and possibly even Owen to follow Given.

Harper is in no way a ‘poor mans Given’.
He has a much better command of his area & defense, comes out to collect on crosses, marshalls the defense better.
And he can shot-stop, maybe he’s not so ‘hollywood on shot-stopping, so 1 to Given there then.

He has been a great player for us and is a model pro. dont think he is leaving for money at all, although he will be able to name his price with man city, i think he is leaving because there will be more chance of winning something there than there will be here for many years to come. he is our only real saleable asset as we have very good cover in goal and if we get 10-12m or a good cash plus player deal and we can use that cash then it will be a good deal for all involved. and i wish him look!

I think Newcastle were wanting more cash in the p/ex deal, as opposed to cash only. At least, thats what I think. Would have no qualms playing Harper, and I would be utterly crestfallen if Michael Ball ended up in black and white stripes!

I think Given is worth a lot more than £10M. The mackems paid £12M for Gordon & Buffon went for £30M+. Given is in his prime and should command a txfer fee of around £18M.
