Newcastle Go After Celtic Captain McManus

It’s the second last Sunday of the January transfer window, so we would expect some transfer stories on Newcastle, and the Sunday Mail in Scotland is reporting that Newcastle could be after Celtic captain, Stephen McManus, in a £4M move by the Tyneside club.

stephen-mcmanus

Stephen McManus – Celtic captain pursued by Newcastle?

The 6’2″ Celtic center back, and sometimes left back, is just 26 years old and has played 131 times for Celtic with 20 goals, and 17 times for Scotland with one goal.

The Scotland international is said to be on a list of central defenders being considered by Newcastle’s Kinnear and Wise,  for a January signing, as the deadline is a short 8 days away.

The Scottish International scored in yesterday’s 3-1 Celtic win over Hibernian and has been recommended to the Newcastle manager Joe Kinnear, and the Irish manager may try to do a player exchange for McManus.

The Mail is saying the player Newcastle may exchange is Spanish left-back Jose Enrique, but we’d be very surprised if that was true, since the 22 year old has been more than decent this season, and could improve further in the Premier League, given more games.

But his name does keep surfacing, so perhaps Joe Kinnear does not rate the player too highly.

We don’t know if this story is true, but McManus seems more than a decent player, and obviously has good leadership abilities, which is the type of players Newcastle need right now.

Whether Celtic will sell of course, is a completely different matter. The Lanark born defender has been at Celtic since he was  16 years old.

All we ask of Newcastle is they sign these players early next week, and not leave things until the last day or two, when things can go wrong.

But we think this would be a good signing, if it ever goes through.

What do you think?

    Decent player but for me, no better then what we currently have. Good back up but I feel Coloccini and Bassong are better quality then McManus

    Pass. Looking good in Scotland means nothing unless your going to play in the Championship. Not the sort of left back we need.

    Nevermind the fact he went off injured yesterday.

    Oh Ed you’ll have the Celtic fans up in arms:

    The 6?2? Celtic left back or center back is just 26 years old and has played 131 times for Rangers with 20 goals, and 17 times for Scotland with one goal.

    Spot the mistake! 😉

    Viduka to the Spuds 😀 Please take him Harry!!! It would be good to free up some money from his hefty wages.

    I agree we need a LB and a back up RB first and foremost.

    I’ve not seen too much of McManus and have always thought of him as a CB , but if he can play LB then he may well be worth looking at.

    This lad is an old school defender and plays with more heat than ability. Something i find appealing after watching too many Zog like players who have the ability but no heart / desire!

    Theres something else McManus has that we clearly dont have anywhere in the team and particularly at the back : LEADERSHIP!

    I for one wouldnt be too quick to dismiss he if offered to us.

    I still personally maintain that we need a defensive midfielder and a left back first and foremost, then the back up right back and creative midfielder etc

    There would be no way, not even for cash would i let Viduka leave this window.

    When fit, he is still one of the best target men in the PL and he offers the quality of control most target men can only dream off.

    The plight we’re in now we need the quality of The Duke, he offers us something different and really helped us last season coming in during the later games.

    ‘Arry is no mug, particularly in the transfer market and if he is indeed after him on a loan, it wouldnt surprise me.

    Come the summer, he will undoubtedly move on and prehaps rightly so, his wages and overall contribution are just not worth it. But let him move on with PL survival in tact and then take on the difficult task of replacing him.

    A decent manager could make Enrique good.
    Maybe he is better as wing back rather than a left back in a back 4. Some of his passes to Owen and Martins have been amazing and have set up goals. Plus Jose is fast and at 22 has plenty of tie to develop.

    We have Colo and Bassong, Edgar and Taylor. Another CBis gong to hinder the chances of a Kadar or Tozer coming through. What is Kinnear’s problem with playing our young emerging players who surely couldn’t do any worse than the shower ”playing” in the first team.

    Off thread a little but, heard on radio that bullard who went to hull for 5mil is on a 4and a half year contract at 50grand a week, so not a case of toon being unable to compete, just sensible he may be decent this season and but is 31 years old and wont be setting the world alight at 35 but still getting his 50k, this is the kind of deal that has us in the s**t we are now. For once well done to wise and co. That hurts me to say and I will still be glad when he goes. Anywhere.

    to be honest I cant see us getting anyone in – some of the people mentioned on this blog are useless, o’hara, huddlestone, bale are 3 of the main reasons Spurs are in a worse position than us, bale and huddlestone were really sh!te yesterday
    luckily people on this blog know about as much as these so called journo’s who keep printing cr@p .

    No players coming in other than loans and they will def be players who aren’t currently playing first team football

    Another wind up by the press. Why do they bother when they know just as we do that this January window is going to be a re-run of the previous window fiasco. That cost us KK. It got us JK and proved what a little tow-rag the barrow boy goblin Wise really is. For Ashley we are not even a hobby anymore! With all this Celtic and Rangers talk why don’t we just apply to join the Scottish Premier?

    I could pull apart that article on many points but I cant be bothered.

    Why would he go for crocked over the hill 33 yr old . He admitted to going after Jones from the scum. Hope he does go before Sunday.

    In regards to NUFC and the transfer window.

    I expect nowt. Dont let the fact that we are skint have anything to do with it. The fact is we need a LB and RB and some form of crative midfielder.

    I can see me heading to SJP next Sunday and only Loven been signed.

    Sure Im optimistic (why) and cant wait for the toon pre match man citey press conference. I wonder what pearls JFK will give us or may chuck our defensive master Hughton out to avoid the questioning from the press.

    I agree too, Viduka wants back to Australia by the looks of things. There seems more truth to the Kenwyne Jones to Spurs rumours. Although, they have many strikers?! :S

    McManus is no left back though he started out in that position as a youngster at Celtic Park. He is an old fashioned CB with the heart of a lion. Not the best distribution but the best crunching tackler in the SPL. The EPL would be a big step up of course but it is possible he could do a good job for you.

    To be honest 4 mil would be a good return for us at Celtic, cant see it happening though.

    Ericles,
    Yeah, why not. You’d be most welcome. We could do with a bit of competition up here!

    Good luck for the rest of the season.

    I For one think this would be a fantastic buy! He is just what we need an old fashioned CB in the mould of a terry or vidic. Seen him play on several ocassions & he’s class. Think he & Bassong would complement each other really well. To all those who say “so what if you do well in Spl doesn’t mean can cut it in prem” look at Di cannio, Viduka, McFadden, Arteta, Gattusso etc. On the viduka front if harry was mad enough to do a deal to have him loan & give us Bent till end of season then i’d snap his hand off. We could then buy Bent in the summer for Owen’s replacement as he’d of played in front of the toon army no doubt grabbed a few goals & would love to stay. I would also offer Spurs Zogs for Bale or Offer him to Villa for Shorey thus sorting out LB prob. If team come end of Jan window is.

    ========Harper=========
    Taylor==McManus=Bassong=Bale=
    ========Colo===========
    Jonas============Lovenkrans=
    ======Barton==========
    ====Bent====Oba

    I’ll be happy with that. Sorts out all prob areas & gives a bit of depth at CB & DM with Butt Guthrie Colo.

    Its probably rubbish – that’s the first thing to say.
    But if it were true, he’s not much of a LB, as Celtic NEED a LB – hence the link with Enrique. And if you know the Celtic fans, most of them consider this fella a bit of a liability anyway. And finally, Celtic are so tight, if they’d sell him for 4 mil that PROVES he’s no good. That’d be the equivalent of anyone else paying you to take the lad away.
