It’s the second last Sunday of the January transfer window, so we would expect some transfer stories on Newcastle, and the Sunday Mail in Scotland is reporting that Newcastle could be after Celtic captain, Stephen McManus, in a £4M move by the Tyneside club.
Stephen McManus – Celtic captain pursued by Newcastle?
The 6’2″ Celtic center back, and sometimes left back, is just 26 years old and has played 131 times for Celtic with 20 goals, and 17 times for Scotland with one goal.
The Scotland international is said to be on a list of central defenders being considered by Newcastle’s Kinnear and Wise, for a January signing, as the deadline is a short 8 days away.
The Scottish International scored in yesterday’s 3-1 Celtic win over Hibernian and has been recommended to the Newcastle manager Joe Kinnear, and the Irish manager may try to do a player exchange for McManus.
The Mail is saying the player Newcastle may exchange is Spanish left-back Jose Enrique, but we’d be very surprised if that was true, since the 22 year old has been more than decent this season, and could improve further in the Premier League, given more games.
But his name does keep surfacing, so perhaps Joe Kinnear does not rate the player too highly.
We don’t know if this story is true, but McManus seems more than a decent player, and obviously has good leadership abilities, which is the type of players Newcastle need right now.
Whether Celtic will sell of course, is a completely different matter. The Lanark born defender has been at Celtic since he was 16 years old.
All we ask of Newcastle is they sign these players early next week, and not leave things until the last day or two, when things can go wrong.
But we think this would be a good signing, if it ever goes through.
What do you think?
