Steve Harper To Sign Up For Three Years On Tyneside

Good news today in that local lad Steve Harper is ready to sign a new three-year contract with Newcastle United.

Steve Harper – ready to sign 3 year deal at Newcastle

The Evening Chronicle say that the Newcastle club stepped up talks on a new deal for Harper, once Given announced he would have to reconsider his options on Tyneside, as Harper is obviously a ready-made replacement for Shay, should Given leave the club iun the next week.

Certainly last year at this time Harper came into the side, because of Shay’s difficulties with his groin, and was one of our best players through the run-in to the season, and was very safe and looked a class goalkeeper.

The Chronicle is today saying that Shay Given’s career on Tyneside looks all but over, as Manchester City get ready to up their bid this week. Maybe it will be like the James Milner case, that once a player says he wants to leave Newcastle, then the powers that be will make sure he leaves.

Of course Shay Given isn’t just another player at Newcastle, and has to be one of the best players to ever play for the club. and certainly the best goalkeeper ever.

Newcastle have also stopped Carlisle United’s extended loan move request for Tim Krul, since Tim would become number two behind Steve Harper should Given move on.

Of course we also have Hexham-born goalkeeper Fraser Forster who is no slouch eityer, and has progressed with amazing strides these last couple of years.

If Harper is between the posts on Wednesday night, then we can kiss goodbye to Shay Given, and we know that most fans will feel sad about that – we certainly will.    🙁

And make no mistake it will be as difficult for Shay to leave Newcastle United, as it is for the fans to see the great one leave for pastures anew.

I dont think even the reception Nobby Solano got from Toon fans when taking corners will get anywhere close to the reception Given will get from the toon fans when at City.

In my opinion, Harper was going if Given was staying. Although we can not sign a better keeper than Harper, has the ability to be the second best keeper in the prem. After Givens injury i wanted Harper to keep his place. Although Shay once again showed his class.

I think its the right time now, if he wants to go then good luck to him (against anyone but us) and we can take the money and invest it in more important areas of our team.
Hopefully we get some incoming players soon though.

I’d hate to see him at any club other than us..
Imagine him pulling off save of the season at another club

I will be more than happy with Harper being our number 1 keeper for a couple of seasons! This is a guy who, if he had been playing regularly for any club, could have had a shot at getting into the England squad.

Huge understatement there. He would walk into the England starting 11 if players were selected on ability. Reliable, great shot stopper and doenst stop screeaming all game.

Oi Oi!! Given will be a massive man!! Its not aboot the money, its aboot how big an influence he is in the dressing room. Once you lose that then the team has lost its direction.
I equate it to me and my mates who have built a camp in Hodgy Park in Benwell. My mate, Big Dan is like Given like. He used to mek sure we stood and fought the Scotchy mongs and if one of wu ran away, he would kick us aal owa the shop. Big Dan, met a lass the other week and just left wu. Whey, all the Scotchy mongs came and aal me mates ran for their lives. I had to stand and chin 20 of them wi me bare hands!! Thats wot Given brings to the camp like!! Sheer hardness and Geordieness!!

If Harper gets into the NUFC first team and plays regularly, I predict that he WILL get an ENGLAND Cap before this years is out…….

Lets face it, he hasnt got much competition out there!!

The Journal: ‘When they were initially approached by Newcastle earlier this month, Celtic enquired about the possibility of a swap deal involving Magpies full-back José Enríque, but the current SPL leaders ended their interest in the former Spain Under-21 international when they discovered that he earns more than £40,000 a week on Tyneside.’

Are we still doing this sort of crazy deal? – paying huge money for lads we don’t know if they are going to cut the mustard or not. Statistically, most of them obviously don’t as we’ve had hundreds of players from all over in the last ten years and yet we still end up with a small squad. Lets face it, most of our foreigners turn out to be pants.
And what happens next? – we can’t get shot because they are all bloody millionaires.
If a player needs that much money to come to Tyneside before he even proves how good he is
then frankly, he doesn’t deserve to be here. Let the big money kick in after a year, or 20 matches. Wages for being a plank means we are stuck with unwanted players we have to give away time after time. No wonder the club is losing money and matches.

If the defence leaks and there’s lots of goals get past him, then that’ll not do his England chances any good at all.. or will it?

The £10m that Joe has suggested he has had for new players is surely the £10m he thinks we will get for the sale of Given. (Funny how we haven’t spend anything yet despite saying he had £10m two weeks ago).

I just hope we get 2 or 3 Man City players in addition to the cash.

Craig Gordon = £9m I rest my case!

Not too convinced this is so good news, really. Harper is a decent keeper, but he’s a poor mans Given.

I remember last year when Given was out through injury, we were missing him badly. Harper is a decent shotstopper, but apart from that he’s an average keeper.

Keep Shaymus, bring Krul back from Carlisle and let Harper move to Spurs for 3m.

yeah cuducini signed for spurs this morning on a free.

steve harper is a top top keeper but he wont win us 10-15 points per season IMO where as shay does, shay given is without a doubt the best shot stopper in the world imo, but he is being sold and that is that we have a ready made replacement who is apart from given as good as anyone else in the premiership and we can invest the money somewhere else on the pitch which is needed terribly

Off topic but transfers related…. interesting… £7m for Charlie boy?

Newcastle will sign Toulouse’s 24-year-old defender Albin Abondo within the next 24 hours. ( 1332 GMT)

Arsenal have been told they will have to pay £8m for Charles N’Zogbia with the Newcastle midfielder keen for a “dream” move. ( 1320 GMT)
