Given To Leave – Newcastle After Miguel Veloso

There is news coming through that Newcastle United have entered the race to sign 22 year-old Miguel Veloso, from Sporting Lisbon, according to the player’s agent.

Miguel Veloso – Bolton and Newcastle said to be after him

That goes with the news that Shay Given did not travel with the Newcastle squad for the game against Manchester City tonight.

It’s not often that a player gives up on Newcastle United, but Shay seems to have given up the ghost on Newcastle, and not many fans will blame him for that, given how lousy we’ve been since Bobby Robson left the club.

We had heard last night that one of our targets last summer, Miguel Veloso was being pursued by Bolton of all clubs, and it would appear that has alerted Newcastle, but we’ll believe it when we see it.

Speaking exclusively to sport.co.uk, today Paolo Barbosa, the player’s agent, revealed there would be more news on the situation regarding the talks between Bolton Wanderers and Sporting Lisbon tomorrow morning, but when asked if any other European sides had shown interest he confirmed:

“Yes, Newcastle have also made an enquiry.”

Barbosa also told sport.co.uk yesterday that Manchester City had made tentative enquiries as to the player’s availability but that their interest had died since the recruitment of Nigel de Jong.

Veloso has been touted as one of the hottest properties in European football with several clubs including Manchester United, Arsenal and Fiorentina all thought to be interested, and Newcastle United were said to be after Miguel only last summer.

The 22-year-old is known for his combative qualities in the heart of midfield and is thought to be available for a fee in the region of £12M, but probably less than that amount.

It would seem that fee is close to the fee Newcastle should get from Manchester City for Given, and it could be well spent on bringing the 5’11” Portuguese International to Newcastle.

If Shay Given goes, which seems very likely, Mike Ashley may well face another backlash from fans, because it’s his treatment of the club, the fans and the players themselves, that is the main reason behind Shay wanting to leave Tyneside , and there’s little doubt about that.

Buying a class young player in a position we need to fill, would go a long way to alleviating the anger that will be turned against him, for driving one of our best long-serving players out of the club.

Much prefer Mehmet Topal, but I’d settle for Veloso, very, very overrated though.

Veloso is overrated. Good player, yes, but not worth over £7mil.

Saying that, I’d take him with our lack of options in central midfield. But there are better options for cheaper available.

I reckon its gunna be like breaking up with the girl of his dreams for shay.

Once the excitement of being in a new team is over, he will lie awake thinking of us.

He’s going to a team who are buying success. shame shame, i know your name.

zog’s off to Villa from what I have heard. I spoke with their HR department earlier, and someone was staying at the offices late to input the overtime for the physio’s. I’m guessing le cock is having his medical this evening. Good riddance to bad rubbish I say.

Let’s just hope if Given is going to Man City then it’s sorted quickly so we at least have a few days to get 1 or 2 players in ourselves.
I won’t entertain players of Veloso’s quality coming here. Not that I don’t want them, just realise that we don’t pay that kind of money for players now, let alone his wages.
Mbia might be a better option as his wage demands won’t be as high.

I really feel that we were in danger of loosing BOTH Harper and Krul if Given didnt go. And the 10 mill we get from him would help us allot in strengthening our weaker positions… Its not that bad ppl, its an area we’re strong in.

Given aint injured, it just means he’s been sold!

If he is injured it could mean no more bids and Harper gets experience and we get to keep him till the end of the season!

I hope we get Shorey + a bit of money for Zog, if we then add a class midfielder for the Given money as well as Ebondo for the MA money we will be pretty strong indeed.

I guarantee that Newcastle are not after Veloso. There is no money available to spend on new players and that won’t change after Given’s multi million Pound move to City. Ashley is only interested in selling players not buying them. We need to face the reality that Newcastle are now merely a selling club.

The quotes from Veloso’s agent amount to just another case of an agent fabricating interest from Newcastle to force the hand of another club genuinely interested in the player.

I have said before that surely Ashley won’t let our better players be sold without actually buying new ones.

But I said that in August and he did let it happen. I really fear we could go down this year.

I don’t think any other manager would stand for this, but JFK is so desperate that he won’t say anything.

    WERE DOOMED!

Ashley has fcked himself if he sells given and zog and we dont get some decent fckin replacements.

We should have atleast 25 mill to use this window if we get rid of those two plus our 10 mill already.

These next few days could decide Nufcs future

    WHY? WHY? WHY? WHY? WHY?

    BLOODY LIE JFK ?

I’m sorry but did some some stick ‘MUG’ stickers on each and every Newcastle United supporter during the night ?

Given is injured…………no hes not, his head has been turned by our lack of ambition / mega money or both. He is not injured and i would expect him to be inbetween the post for Man Citehs game on the weekend.

I wonder if he has the same injury Defoe had before joining Spurs days later.

At least Bellamy had the decency not to delude Wham fans and told the club he wanted away and didnt want to play for them anymore. (note to Newcastle and Joe, thats called honestly)

For the little i think of Bellamy, i rate him a better person than JFK at the moment.

Damn disgrace……we deserve not to be lied to at the very least.
    Oh and honesty costs nowt!
