There is news coming through that Newcastle United have entered the race to sign 22 year-old Miguel Veloso, from Sporting Lisbon, according to the player’s agent.
Miguel Veloso – Bolton and Newcastle said to be after him
That goes with the news that Shay Given did not travel with the Newcastle squad for the game against Manchester City tonight.
It’s not often that a player gives up on Newcastle United, but Shay seems to have given up the ghost on Newcastle, and not many fans will blame him for that, given how lousy we’ve been since Bobby Robson left the club.
We had heard last night that one of our targets last summer, Miguel Veloso was being pursued by Bolton of all clubs, and it would appear that has alerted Newcastle, but we’ll believe it when we see it.
Speaking exclusively to sport.co.uk, today Paolo Barbosa, the player’s agent, revealed there would be more news on the situation regarding the talks between Bolton Wanderers and Sporting Lisbon tomorrow morning, but when asked if any other European sides had shown interest he confirmed:
“Yes, Newcastle have also made an enquiry.”
Barbosa also told sport.co.uk yesterday that Manchester City had made tentative enquiries as to the player’s availability but that their interest had died since the recruitment of Nigel de Jong.
Veloso has been touted as one of the hottest properties in European football with several clubs including Manchester United, Arsenal and Fiorentina all thought to be interested, and Newcastle United were said to be after Miguel only last summer.
The 22-year-old is known for his combative qualities in the heart of midfield and is thought to be available for a fee in the region of £12M, but probably less than that amount.
It would seem that fee is close to the fee Newcastle should get from Manchester City for Given, and it could be well spent on bringing the 5’11” Portuguese International to Newcastle.
If Shay Given goes, which seems very likely, Mike Ashley may well face another backlash from fans, because it’s his treatment of the club, the fans and the players themselves, that is the main reason behind Shay wanting to leave Tyneside , and there’s little doubt about that.
Buying a class young player in a position we need to fill, would go a long way to alleviating the anger that will be turned against him, for driving one of our best long-serving players out of the club.
Comments welcome.

Comment #45We’ll sell Given and Zog for 15 mil on Friday and claim we have no time to sign anybody. Nice little earner Mike. The club is treating the fans like muppets. And we muppets are putting up with it. We DESERVE relegation.

Comment #47Lets all just wait to see who’s here come 3 Feb before you all start having mild heart attacks eh?!
If we still only have Lovenkrands, and have sold Given and Zog, then I’ll join your calls for heads, but until then….

Comment #51I love this club! But I never thought I would see the day that Shay left. I don’t think anyone blames him for doing so. I’m expecting an announcement after the match, along with most of you. As for N’Zogbia….pfft. I don’t care if he leaves. Really would love to see someone of quality brought in. Never seen this guy play but what i’ve heard he is a quality player. MA has some spending to do! Mbia possibly the better option.

That is ridiculously short sighted. He had us signing players, but financially we were failing horribly.

Of all the times we could have used Zog it would be today (on the left with Duff on the RW), but no. He must be leaving for be left out today!? Does anyone know the bench?

Comment #61The reason for the fight between Carroll and Zog_ Carroll called him smelly! Apparently the lad has an odour problem, apart from the shi- that comes out of his mouth. Good riddance to the horri ble little gobshi-e.

Comment #77A few things, no mention at all as to why Jonas is missing on the nufc official page.
Hopefully Lovenkrands will come on at half time and Geremi will go off.
Will be interesting to see Taylor and Bassong together, and Colo in mid!!
Would expect to see Xisco on at some point too.
Who is this Brad Inman who has got on the bench above all the other high performers in the reserves – I’ve never even heard his name before!?
Given and Zog injured! haha. As though they expect us to believe it!
