Joe Kinnear has admitted today that he is resigned to the heartbreak of losing Shay Given.
Shay Given – out of Joe’s hands now
And of course as fate would have it we play the club where Shay may well end up tonight – Manchester City.
But we just hope that if Newcastle let Given go they do it for the price he is worth – and that has to be at least £10M. If Man City will not pay that then keep Shay until the summer, when somebody will pay that amount.
But Kinnear has said that he is still to make a decision on which goalkeeper will start tonight, which sounds strange to us becasue why would he now play Given?
That decision will be made just before the game, and of course the players will be informed about team selection first.
Kinnear told the Chronicle today:
“I’ve bent over backwards to keep Shay, and I have told the powers that be that he has got to stay.”
“But I understand it from Shay’s point of view.” “He wants to leave, but I have tried my hardest to make him stay.”
“He’s done 11 years here at Newcastle and I think he wants a new challenge.”
“I left Shay with Mike Ashley, Derek Llambias and Michael Kennedy, and the talks went on for a few hours.”
“It’s out of my hands and I am still waiting for the final outcome, but I think he wants a new challenge and that he wants to speak to Manchester City.”
“I would be heartbroken to see him go because he is one of the best keepers in the world. But Man City keep banging on the door to talk to him.”
That’s the first we have heard for a while that Given still wants to leave the club, so if that’s the case we should work out the best deal we can for the Irishman.
It will very sad to see Shay leave, but we shouldn’t keep players at the club, who don’t want to stay, and that’s true even in Shay’s case.
But if he does leave he’ll still be one of the greatest players ever to play for Newcastle.
But life goes on, and the Newcastle United club is bigger than any player, and Newcastle will go on too, and hopefully to the success that Shay has craved for – for for 11 years but didn’t get.
But that hardly looks like happening any time soon either. So sad.
