Nolan Can’t Wait To Play In Front Of 52,000 Newcastle Fans

12:52 pm, Friday, January 30th, 2009 by Dr. Ed Harrison · 85 Comments

It’s now official because it’s on the official club site, that Newcastle United United have indeed completed the signing of Bolton Wanderers midfielder Kevin Nolan, for a fee of £4M, on a contract that will keep the player at Newcastle through the summer of 2013.

Kevin Nolan – will wear the number 4 shirt at Newcastle

The Newcastle web site said today:

The 26-year-old penned a four-and-a-half year deal at St.James’ Park this morning on Friday morning and will wear the No.4 shirt for the Magpies.

A delighted Nolan told nufcTV this morning:

“It’s all happened so quickly but it was an opportunity which was impossible to turn down.”

“I can’t wait to play in front of these fans every week and I’m really looking forward to the next four-and-a-half years.”

There will be an interview with the player this afternoon on nufcTV, and we cannot wait to hear what Kevin says in a deal that took less than 24 hours to complete.

So Newcastle have now proved that when they have to, they can move at lightning speed, and this will go a little way to making Newcastle fans a little happier.

But now the club must press on to sign more players before Monday afternoon.  If we can do that we’ll have a chance of keeping our Premier league status this season.

We’d now like to see both Albin Ebondo and Ryan Taylor brought to the club as soon as possible, and more good players if we are indeed to sell Shay Given and Charles N’Zogbia, because if both players go we should be around £14M better off.

But let’s not sell N’Zogbia unless we can get a good player in to replace him.

Comments welcome.

more signings is good, lose more games and the blame can be solely put on kinnear, just brilliant. then he can’t say these are not my players i wan tmy own players. he better create a club of his own.

  • 10 clinta // Jan 30, 2009 at 1:02 PM

Shit they don’t muck about with the photo ops do they?

On an earlier thread I made a comment ‘it’s never as easy as we think to sign players, a lot wan’t want to come to us, we don’t know what happens really….’

Absolute bollocks that was then, Nolans proof you can do a deal and get him on the pitch with the shirt in his hand in about 2 days time.

hang on maybe it’s photoshopped??!!!! lol!

  • 11 sirjasontoon // Jan 30, 2009 at 1:03 PM

    He came from Bolton
    He’s Kevin Nolan
    He’s got 4 sisters
    They gave me blisters

  • 12 Norn Iron Magpie // Jan 30, 2009 at 1:03 PM

    Who’s next then? Ryan taylor?

  • 13 sahota // Jan 30, 2009 at 1:03 PM

We should not get carried away by this. Its good signing but don’t we need more. I am suspecting this signing has been done to just cover Barton’s position. We still has not moved ahead with anything else. I am hoping we should sign at least one more player before end of day today. And hopefully 1 before close of window. I would personally like insomnia 😉 to stay, but not sure if he will play well enough now or not. We should not let him go away without good deal for club and also without buying anyone else to replace him.

Those of you who were incensed when SA tried to sign him better not post about this being a good signing! You know who you are!

  • 27 Charlietoon // Jan 30, 2009 at 1:08 PM

sirjasontoon thats great really….dont know if it will motivate him though 🙂 I disagree though Ed we need to get rid of Zog regardless of replacement. He is a cancer. take the hit and let him go for five and taylor or five to a french club

  • 28 Toon_Ksk (ENOUGH IS ENOUGH!) // Jan 30, 2009 at 1:09 PM

Quite surprised by the £4M fee. I thought he is going to cost twice that considering that he is the skipper for Bolton. Well, £4M is a nice sum to pay for an established player, would rather have him for this sum than M’bia for £10M.

Ryan Taylor next? I wonder how much he will cost. And please no N’Zogbia in a straight swap. N’Zogbia is worth £7M at least.

  • 29 dannyhunt // Jan 30, 2009 at 1:09 PM

good signing in nolan! lets forget about not selling zog until we get a replacement, he is a spoilt brat who constantly spits out his dummy, such an unsettling influence should be offloaded straight away, whatever the bid! he’ll soon realise his mistake of burning his bridges. zog oot!

  • 30 Nobby_Long // Jan 30, 2009 at 1:10 PM

    Every little thing…….

  • 31 Ourman // Jan 30, 2009 at 1:10 PM

I was thinking the other day that while we needed signings who the hell, that was any good, would sign for us?

I suppose the best we could go for was a decent premiership pro, whose been through a relegation battle before, who has had no injuries worries – but who was probably down on his luck enough to consider signing for us despite our current situation.

Step forward Kevin Nolan. In the last couple of years he has had his fair share of detractors at Bolton. There’ll be quite a few happy to see him gone.

So we shouldn’t be thinking we have just signed the Kevin Nolan who was once knocking on England’s door.

But if he’s been that good – then he can be again. It’s not like his legs have gone or anything.

And he’s going to love going from playing in front of the Bolton boo boys to a full(ish) house (for now) at SJP.

I reckon Joe’s got a good a player as we can expect to sign in the circumstances.

We were always going to have to gamble on a player because anyone else won’t touch us right now. But better to gamble on a fit, healthy, honest, home grown pro – than another Carlo Kick-A-Ball or some knee-knacked has been.

Whatever his reason for falling out with the Bolton fans – he was still captain for a reason.

I reckon he’s well worth a few quid for first goal against the mackems. Instant legend status if he does.

    any other news mullet

  • 37 Kash // Jan 30, 2009 at 1:13 PM

Journal reckons that Ebondo deal is off considering they’re asking for more money. I think it is, thats why we’ve gone for Taylor instead.

Come lads, CM sorted all we need now is Taylor for RB and another LB, CM, RM and ST!!!

  • 38 Kash // Jan 30, 2009 at 1:14 PM

If Given is training, then he won’t leave until Monday most likely!!!

  • 39 clinta // Jan 30, 2009 at 1:14 PM

Charlietoon- if we could get £4 for zog with taylor our way i’d take it like.

We’d only get £6M max for zog in the summer, probably less if he hasn’t played for that time, wants to leave and the club definately want rid of…

We’d have no pulling power in a deal with anyone then, and would probably lower our price.

  • 40 tilley // Jan 30, 2009 at 1:15 PM

CM is not sorted, we still need another for cover !!!

  • 41 Darling27 // Jan 30, 2009 at 1:18 PM

  • 45 clinta // Jan 30, 2009 at 1:20 PM

tilley- agree, currently we have Nolan and geremi fit.

The one problem i think we do have is now, when all CM’s are fit (yeah like thats going happen once for us?!) we now have nolan, barton, guthrie and butt!!

there all the same type of player really aren’t they. k nolan and joey are a bit more go forward, but there hardly the creative midfielders we need are they?

  • 46 Dennis Twice // Jan 30, 2009 at 1:20 PM

    Ashley the MAN!!!

The deadline for weekend games is noon today by the way lads. Diouf just signed for blackburn but cant play this weekend. I’m sure Nolan will have been wrapped up by 12, so he should be available for the scum.

  • 49 clinta // Jan 30, 2009 at 1:23 PM

hmm.. all getting caried away at the minute aren’t we.

in reality: we have signed nolan and LOv…..something or rather, have a small squad with more injured players than fit ones and are still a good bet for relegation with our fate in the hands of a has been manager out of his depth.

sorry lads to be a bit negative, but it has to be said like!

  • 50 geordie jock // Jan 30, 2009 at 1:23 PM

Can anyone tell me how we will get £6m or £7m for insomnia, he is shite, runs around like a headless chicken , doesn’t pass and nearly always loses the ball. I would personally give him away but we are so short on numbers we cannot let him go till we have some more players in.

  • 51 Geordie_Craig // Jan 30, 2009 at 1:23 PM

The boy had become stale at Bolton….

This is a step up and a chance to possibly a chance to put himself back in the England squad shop window…..

Exactly what we need….young, english, hungry to improve and prove his doubters wrong……

Barton and Nolan centre of the park when Joey is back fit….A mouth watering combination of hard work, grit, experience and determination sprinkled with creativity….

    Extremely positive signing

clinta I agree too many people are getting carried away. I know it must be easy after what has gone on but we have had to wait 30 days for our 1st proper signing. We need at least 3 more signings just to give us a fighting chance. Nothing that has happened will make me think we can get out of this mess. I hope i am proved wrong and if i am i will hold my hands up.

  • 68 LooneyToon // Jan 30, 2009 at 1:40 PM

Proof will be in the pudding mate as to how effective they are…..

Personally I think Joey Barton is a very creative player….depends on what you class as creative however….in my view being able to not only spot a killer pass but execute it is a must….and Barton certainly has that in his locker…..

Palacios and Cattermole….was a very effective midfield partnership and you cannot say either player is that “creative”….look how that turned out…..

keep the faith squire….as I mentioned above, the proof will be defo in the pudding….and I am liking the look of the pudding 😉

  • 69 alextoon // Jan 30, 2009 at 1:41 PM

If we can just stay up this season though and get shot of Owen and his 115k pay packet in the summer, at least we are signing more players with a bit of fight in them.

The likes of Barton, Smith, Nolan, Butt and Steven Taylor will certainly add back-bone. But we still need a striker cos Duff and Carroll just doesnt look right.

  • 70 pearceet // Jan 30, 2009 at 1:41 PM

  • 71 ToonAsia // Jan 30, 2009 at 1:41 PM

hmm i think podolski is available, why don’t we try bid for him??

  • 72 Micky Toon // Jan 30, 2009 at 1:42 PM

I think the reason that so many people are getting carried away is because it’s a massive relief that we’ve finally signed someone when it looked like we were going to come away with nowt.
I’m hoping, as others have said, that Nolan is another Gary Speed. When he signed for us, I was none to happy. I thought he wasn’t good enough for us and had seen his best days at Leeds.
Nolan hasn’t shown he is player he was a couple of years ago, but he might just need a fresh start. He used to be immense, consistently boltons best player. I wonder what happened? Hopefully he was just stuck in a rut and he can become the next Gary Speed for us.

  • 73 Crofty // Jan 30, 2009 at 1:42 PM

Lets just hope its Shay Given Ryan Taylor likes scoring against and not Newcastle… If so we get 2 goals out of him next season at least lol

  • 74 Ever seen a mackem in Milan? // Jan 30, 2009 at 1:43 PM

Podolski has agreed to join his old club Cologne/Koln in the summer so i dont think we can go for him now.

  • 75 sweendog // Jan 30, 2009 at 1:44 PM

He’s what we need .. not a great player but solid in centre midfield .. we still need pace around him .. if we can get M’Bia or Veloso as well .. or what about M’Bami from Marseille for around 2 mill .. that’d be good business.

  • 76 sweendog // Jan 30, 2009 at 1:46 PM

  • 81 Tel // Jan 30, 2009 at 2:02 PM

Personally think its a good signing, about time we had someone with a bit fight in him instead of wantaway wannabes who give up after ten minutes. OK he has had his recent problems at bolton, even there blog is split some are pleased to see him go and others are devastated. Megson is furious according to the mirror. Still think we will get one or two new faces in depending on the shay saga and charlie. Whilst on the subject of shay both ashley and joking ear have stated they are doing all they can to keep him. He is our player under contract for two years, if they really want him that much just put foot down and say NOT FOR SALE. I think what they really mean is we are trying to get as much as possible, after all fatman is a gambling man and will no doubt have a decent poker face. The longer he hangs in there the higher the bids.
