Now that we’ve witnessed the transfer window in January, it seems fairly obvious who Joe Kinnear will be moving out in the summer at Newcastle.

Michael Owen - will have cost the club around £1.3M for every goal
And it seems there are a lot of players, who are either out of contract, or who on the fringes of the team, but are receiving really high wages, or both, will be moved out.
The players we think will leave the club, along with their estimated weekly wages are as follows:
Player Weekly Wage £
Viduka 60,000
Cacapa 35,000
Smith 55,000
Owen 105,000
Enrique 40,000
Geremi 60,000
Xisco 20,000
Total 375,000
So there’s a couple of things we see from this. Quite a few players who are the fringe of the first team, and quite a few who are always injured are still getting huge wages at the club, and they just don’t deserve them.
We don’t think Newcastle will make much of an attempt to keep Michael Owen at the club, and they will bring in another striker in the summer to partner Martins, Carroll and Ameobi up front. And of course Peter Lovekrands can also play in a striker role.
But when you look at the above players and realize that Ashley is paying out £375K each and every week for these players, Newcastle are just not getting their moneys worth, and that must be put right in the summer.
Michael Owen, as we all know has been injured for most of his time at the club, and it doesn’t seem to be getting any better since he’s out injured again.
As one commentator said recently Michael scores once in every two games on average, but he only plays around 20 games a season. And since Michael has shown little interest in staying around on Tyneside, even though he hasn’t earned the top money we’ve paid him, he will be allowed to move elsewhere as a free agent.
His deal at Newcastle will go down as one of the worst ever for a Premier League club.
Some of the players in the above list have their contracts running out, including Viduka, Cacapa, in addition to Owen.
And most will want to stay, like Viduka, Smith and Geremi, but only because they are on such high wages.
We have to agree with Mike that the wage bill needs to be lowered and the club can do that big time in the summer, and replace the above players with younger players just as good, who hopefully are not in the injury room all the time.
Comments welcome.

I must admit, not one of the players in the list warrant a wage they’re on.

Keep Smith and Enrique, but get rid of the rest.
How about bringing in Valeri Bojinov from Man City as part of the Given deal. I know he is injured and has been for a long while, but he is a great player and i am sure he would add alot if we could get him fit because him and Oba upfront would complement each other very well.

I think that Duff may be added to that list. I like him personally and his effort is better than most but he’s just not the player he was before we bought him.
I just hope that Martins doesn’t get added to that list.
6 toonarmyuk // Jan 31, 2009 at 11:31 AM
Definitely get shot of Owen, Cacapa, Geremi, Duff, Smith and Viduka. Will be a huge relief to get rid of hangers on who dont really want to play for NUFC, but just want a nice wage!
I think Enrique has something left to prove yet, but it looks like Kinnear hasnt got the time for him. Xisco must be on some sort of additional fee agreement if he plays a certain amount of games…..unless Kinnear REALLY doesnt like him (why though!?).
It all depends on who’s manager in the summer though. I suspect that Kinnear might keep Duff, Butt and Owen if he possibly can, but I think any other manager would get shot of the list I gave above.
7 carlio // Jan 31, 2009 at 11:32 AM
In Owen’s defence, Alan Smith has cost more per goal. If you actually count his single goal in a friendly, then he has cost us nearly £11m per goal (£6m transfer fee, nearly £5m in wages so far).

It would be great if Smith turned it all around he does put everything in to the game, imagine if it was Smith and Carroll the saviours!! None of us would have put money on that. Stranger things have happened.
10 cjcox88 // Jan 31, 2009 at 11:32 AM
i think that enrique is probably he only player with the potential to be earning that money. He clearly can defend, its just lapses of concentration and i expect him to improve now calderwood is a the club. he can go forward, we have seen him almost score a couple in the last few weeks and he has loads of pace, he might not seem to, but he outpaced wright phillips against citeh so i think we should def keep him

19 toonarmyuk // Jan 31, 2009 at 11:36 AM
ian – it must SURELY be time for Smith to get a run together and stump up the goods!? I think while we NUFC fans always seem to pessimistic about the club in general, we always seem to cling to the hope that a cack player will come good one day.
Smith fits that bill. Fair enough, he might give everything he has each match, but he hasnt scored a goal for us, which is quite simply not good enough. If he can get a run together with either Carroll/Ameobi until the end of the season and get some important goals, he might be given a lifeline, but I still suspect he is 1. too injury prone, and 2. not a good enough striker to warrant another season here.
20 sirjasontoon // Jan 31, 2009 at 11:36 AM

Xisco and Enrique is the only one I want to see remain at the club.

Keep Barton and to a degree if Smith can prove himself a valuble asset between now and the summer.
All the rest can do one. Must be nice to be paid to sit on a sick note – especially at that amount.
I like duff but at that money – he aint really done nowt.
25 Dragonera // Jan 31, 2009 at 11:40 AM
I doubt Enrique is earning 40k, that was just nonsense from a tabloid paper to fuel the negativity already surrounding him. He is more likely on around 25k. Keep Enrique, get rid of Duff instead.
26 toonarmyuk // Jan 31, 2009 at 11:40 AM
Doocey, I would probably say that the Boumsong deal was out worst ever, followed closely by Luque. I’m not even going to try and think about Marcelino.
Owen’s does come pretty close though – not entirely his or the clubs fault (injuries the main cause), and he undoubtedly has helped in drawing other players to the club, but overall it has been a disastrous signing in terms of value for money. The only upside is that we for £6m (or £7m?) compo from the FA for his injury.
27 Doocey // Jan 31, 2009 at 11:40 AM

29 toonarmyuk // Jan 31, 2009 at 11:42 AM
Toon Graeme – as you mention Barton (who isn’t in Ed’s list), when you say “the rest can all do one” I presume you mean the rest of the squad?
If that’s the case, are you therefore saying that you dont want to keep Harper, Bassong, Martins, Beye, and a handful of the younger lot?

Enrique is not that bad.
Xisco is probably not good at all if he is not playing so even the 20K is too much.
The rest, yeah. I am over Owen, he can go.
Lets just get a good replacement for him so Oba will have a good partner.
34 cjcox88 // Jan 31, 2009 at 11:45 AM
bojinov is not the answer, quality player, but cant stay fit. has basically been out his whole time at man city, personally id rather have jo, another player that just hasnt been given a chance, someone doesnt turn from good to awful in a day! in an ideal world tho, we bring in onoaha and 6 mill, meaning
——————Harper————————

————martins———carroll————
i kno this assuemd veloso wil sign but take the 6 mill from zog and 6 from given and snap veloso up straight away maybe it will take an extra 2 million from ashley, i believe that team would have the quality to move up the table significantly
35 RyanToon // Jan 31, 2009 at 11:45 AM

owens quality but he doesnt wanna stay
36 MarkO // Jan 31, 2009 at 11:46 AM
How can you get rid of Oba. It isn’t a coincidence that we won most of our games when he was in the team. Since he has left the team we have not been creating anything and we haven’t been scoring anything either. If Oba plays tommorrow we will win if he doesn’t we will lose simple. He terrorises defences as they never know what he is going to do next and that is a huge advantage.
37 Toon Graeme // Jan 31, 2009 at 11:47 AM
Sorry toonarmyuk, at work so speed typing.

42 toonarmyuk // Jan 31, 2009 at 11:49 AM
MarkO – agreed. Martins frustrates sometimes when he seems to run into players, or takes wildcard strikes at goal, but I’ve seen enough of those runs/strikes come off to agree that defences dont like playing against him.
I think he needs to learn a bit about passing when he’s got the ball, but he’s most certainly an asset when he plays.
43 RyanToon // Jan 31, 2009 at 11:50 AM

44 MarkO // Jan 31, 2009 at 11:51 AM
Team
Harper
Onuoh—Colo—Bassong—Enrique
Jonas—Veloso—Nolan—Taylor
Oba–Bojinov
This team would easily keep us up and there is decent backup for most positions.
I feel that if Bojinov can keep fit then he could surprise a lot of people. Yes he isn’t the greatest player in the world, but he would give us valuable goals which is what we need.

Too Graeme – it looks like Barton has turned a very important corner for most NUFC fans. I vividly remember most of the commentors on here (me included) baying for his blood when he was in the nick and rejected a pay cut, but all praise for the lad – he seems to have just pulled his socks up and got on with it since he got out.
He’s definitely one that will give it their all when playing (looking forward to him and Nolan playing together…A LOT!), and it’s a shame he’s going to out for most of our run in.
48 RyanToon // Jan 31, 2009 at 11:53 AM

I just remembered a week or so ago i was debating with bloggers about Owen and they had the audacity to mention Nistelrooy in the same sentence as him, lol.
50 toonarmyuk // Jan 31, 2009 at 11:56 AM
MarkO – I think a seemingly injury prone player (Bojinov) is the last thing we should be taking risks on right now. Regardless of his ability, our training ground/regime seems to be picking off injury prone players – and those who aren’t – one by one.
No doubt, this should be investigated by the club as a matter of utmost importance during the close season. It seems to be season after season after season that our players are out en-masse with hamstring injuries, and it can’t just be co-incidence…

54 LooneyToon // Jan 31, 2009 at 11:59 AM
Once the high wage earners are off the wage bill we can start recruiting, up and coming, hungry footballers who have something to prove and their best years ahead of them….
6 weeks ago I stated on hear that I hoped Owen would stay….I will now hold my hands up and admit I was wrong…now I think we and him would be best served if he moved on….Unfortunatley he has lost that 2 yards of pace that made him special 5-6 years ago…
We need someone to play upfront with Oba….Carroll has potential but is a little raw…would love the lad to do well…..My choice would be Ranger…..watched this lad a few times and he has everything…pace, power, strength, good in the hear and he can finish….he also has a little bit of arrogance (a good arrogance) that all top players have…
Build a side around Harper, Beye, Colo, Bassong, Barton, Nolan, Jonas and Martins……
I will also mention Alan Smith…..lot of doubters on here and the terraces which I can understand to a point as he hasnt done the business for us…..I do however believe, given a run in the team, up front, he will deliver the goods and prove his doubters wrong….
Bring on the scum….I have butterflies….
55 MarkO // Jan 31, 2009 at 11:59 AM
How about signing him on loan with the option to send him back if he gets injured this would secure no long term commitment to an injury prone player and we could asses his real value.
56 toonarmyuk // Jan 31, 2009 at 11:59 AM
Dragonera – what are you inferring? That Owen isn’t as good as VN, or the other way round?
You have to acknowledge that both VN and Owen in their day were truly World Class and would easily have broken world records if their clubs sold them at their peaks.
57 toonarmyuk // Jan 31, 2009 at 12:02 PM
Ryan Toon – with you there, but one exception. I am hearing from a few people close to the club that Lovenkrands is flying at the minute and that he’s gonna be the surprise performer of the second half of this season. If this is the case, I would say replace Duff with him. Of course, it may not turn out like that, but we’ll see.

Its irrelevant who are best strikers are., without a world class defensive midfielder we will always be struggling, forget the flair players they are nothing without a a good DM. Ask your self why are Arsenal inconsistent this year? Because they have lost their good DM’s. Manure struggled until Carrick was fit! Villa have Barry, Liverpool have Mascherano, that’s why they are up there. Look at any top team in Europe and you will find a good DM. Its very easy to blame you strikers when you are not scoring and blame your defenders when you concede but it is all about the team effort and the DM is the heart. We need a Velso, Mbia , Cana desperately and everyone else will suddenly be ten times better

Barton has changed a corner……since he “issue” in Liverpool over a year ago now, he has kept his nose well and truly clean….
He is a quality player who has had his demons in the past…..he has the charachter to admit he had a problem, sort them out and move on with his life…..
He wants to be here…he wants to repay the club for standing by him…..for me he would be my captain in the summer…..he would carry the armband with passion and drive the side on….

I know that Bojinov is injury prone but if we can get him fit he would be a great player for us. My only worry is that he’ll turn out like Emre, great when he’s playing, but that wont be very often.
Possible Team (for rest of season)
Harper
Beye, Coloccini, Bassong, Enrique
R. Taylor, Guthrie, Nolan, Jonas
Bojinov, Martins
Subs: Krul, S. Taylor, Kadar, Barton, Lovenkrands, Owen, Carroll

david craig dont enter here anymore otherwise i’m going to kick ur ass
96 kash@home // Jan 31, 2009 at 12:48 PM
We’re blatantly not gonna be able to offload any of these players before the summer!
However, in this current pridicament, with Nolan and Taylor on board and Given and Zogs leaving, we still need:
LB, CM, RM and possibly a striker. However, with Smith due back, and OWen only 4 weeks away, then we maybe alright for strikers.
I am hoping we try and entice City to include Elano and Sturridge in the deal for Given.
Fox has been touted as a potential LB, so then if we can find a quality RM we’ll be in a good position.

Oh what a shock, footballers being paid a lot, I never knew that.
Just Let them all go and see who they bring in, if it is anything like the last three windows our team will be GREAT I cant wait for next season. We will definately we challenging for Europe.
Pffffffffff

GeordieJayne – What drugs has your doctor been giving you??
99 Doocey // Jan 31, 2009 at 12:51 PM
Davy Craig isn’t David Craig.

Methinks GeordieJayne may be using a wee bit of sarcasm there! Am I right GJ?
104 Turkish Magpie // Jan 31, 2009 at 1:00 PM
It says Taylor has a long throw!
That’ll be good for Ameobi and Carroll
105 keeganjr // Jan 31, 2009 at 1:01 PM
bring in harewood on loan or try too lure him 2-3mill. power and pace
106 Turkish Magpie // Jan 31, 2009 at 1:02 PM
for Ameobi to get his 50th against Makems would be magical!
107 Stuart79 // Jan 31, 2009 at 1:05 PM
Kinnear has said he hopes for at least one more signing before the deadline.
That I presume means we’ll bring in one more.
What position would everyone want that one signing to be?
Considering we should have more than 15m left after Given and Nzogbia have went
108 MarkO // Jan 31, 2009 at 1:09 PM
Ameobi isn’t playing tommorrow, but Oba is and hopefully Veloso will be aswell.
109 Californication // Jan 31, 2009 at 1:11 PM
MarkO- Even if we did sign Veloso he would not be able to play.
110 GeordieJayne // Jan 31, 2009 at 1:11 PM
Davy Craig you are spot there I was lol
111 Swedgen // Jan 31, 2009 at 1:11 PM
Alreet lads, funny time to join up seeing the situation we’re in, what a merry mess!
All of them can go. Owen may be a great player who has been getting rubbish service recently but you can tell now his heart’s not in it for us any more. So much for loyalty and professionalism, not many other clubs would have had enough faith in the crock to keep dishing out upwards of 100 grand weekly to someone who spent nigh on two years on the treatment table. What a joke.
I love Viduka, I think he’s world class, but he’s badly injury prone and his general levels of fitness speak volumes (and not good ones) about his commitment to his football. Bye-bye.
Enrique should never have been allowed to sign on 40k anyway, that is bloody ridiculous a youngster coming from Spain who hasn’t exactly set the world alight on that much, madness.
Geremi looks the same age as the number in thousands he earns every week, Smith has shown none of this fabled ‘work ethic’ and ‘fighting spirit’ that he’s so famous for the entire time he’s been here, he can’t be bothered simple as that. Cacapa, see ya, Duff, au revoir.
Whoever said get rid of Barton is crazy, he has improved no end since he’s gotten over his personal problems.

113 Stuart79 // Jan 31, 2009 at 1:14 PM
Marko – What drugs are you on too?
Veloso? Do you really think we’ll sign him?
114 Davy Craig // Jan 31, 2009 at 1:14 PM
Thought so
115 keeganjr // Jan 31, 2009 at 1:16 PM
wigan is more ambitious then newcastle.. yeah, by selling palcios, valencia and taylor. and buying zoggy.. what a dumb ass
116 Sav // Jan 31, 2009 at 1:16 PM
Veloso can play LB, CM and CD? But unfortunately, not all at the same time.
117 Doocey // Jan 31, 2009 at 1:16 PM
Lads, new post on my site.
I think it you will be all keen to see it, especially the little treat at the bottom of the post.
You know the story, click my name and enjoy my latest post because I know you will
118 Doocey // Jan 31, 2009 at 1:20 PM
Taylor won’t play tomorrow unfortunately.
Medical was done today but personal terms are only entering it final stages.
Pity really.
119 batty // Jan 31, 2009 at 1:27 PM
We don’t think Newcastle will make much of an attempt to keep Michael Owen at the club, and they will bring in another striker in the summer to partner Martins EDdo you honestly beleive martins will still be here next season
120 ObaFan2 // Jan 31, 2009 at 1:37 PM
Bulid the defence around Bassong,
Midfield around Barton
and Forwards……Oba.
Owen’s proved too injury prone, Colo n Bassong have been our best CB pairing in a long while and we have numerous young talent coming through.
Maybe Nolan and Barton can becoming a great midfield pairing for the future.
121 OutClassed // Jan 31, 2009 at 2:08 PM
Viduka 60,000
Cacapa 35,000
Smith 55,000
Owen 105,000
Enrique 40,000
Geremi 60,000
Xisco 20,000
That’s four strikers out, leaving Carroll, Martins and Lovenkrands. but if we could bring Saviola on loan for this season (and next) it shouldn’t be too hard to find someone else.
If Enrique goes we’ll need a left back and we could surely flog Enrique for around 3m or more? As that’s the price quoted to get Dan Fox.
Cacapa is the centre back that could easily be replaced, especially if Onouha or Dunne comes in with the Given transfer.
Lastly there’s Geremi who can play RB or RW, and now we’ve got Taylor to cover there?
375k x 52 = 19.5m saved a year on wages, although the replacements will cost a bit but nowhere near the wage those still here are on!
122 Sav // Jan 31, 2009 at 2:22 PM
Owen should lose the captaincy for starters. Hope Nolan might take that on.
123 OutClassed // Jan 31, 2009 at 2:23 PM
Sav, Nolans barely through the door and your on about him being captain?
My choice for tomorrows game would be Duff or Butt (:
124 Swedgen // Jan 31, 2009 at 2:25 PM
Saviola will want massive wages, near the amount of Owen’s. Maybe Ashley would be prepared to shell out for a loan period but I can’t see us investing in him long term. Shame because he was, is, and always will be world class. You don’t just lose that.
125 stevt_0_3 // Jan 31, 2009 at 3:05 PM
Wasn’t Ashley already in charge when we signed all the players mentioned (except for Owen)!!!
126 supermac // Jan 31, 2009 at 4:50 PM
i hope owen does go in the summer im sure he will he will never be the same player again and is past his best if he’d stayed injury free he could of been a ledgend for us but its never gonna happen now with us then not paying his wages it would lift a huge burden of our shoulders and free up more money in my eyes this can only be a good thing
127 chuck // Jan 31, 2009 at 5:37 PM
Some people posting team selections that include M. Veloso.
It`s not gonna happen, just throwing you a bone to distract you from the fact only bargain basement stuff coming through the door, like the great Ryan Taylor for what was it, oh yeah 1.5m.
C`mon folks wise up we went through this before, what are you slow learners or something.
128 Macas // Jan 31, 2009 at 7:01 PM
All these people saying Ashley has to cut the wage bill becasue of the previous regime’s stupidity, its interesting to note that the likes of Barton, Geremi, Smith and Viduka were all signed by Ashley. Its a shame Shepherd gets all the stick for this.
129 SAMTHECAT // Jan 31, 2009 at 8:27 PM
All of us would have said Smith 60000 a week no way apart from Mike i know nothing about running a football club Ashley. No point moaning about the wage bill if you were part of the problem.
I wouldnt pay anyone over 40000 apart from Martins.
130 Tom_Toon // Jan 31, 2009 at 9:16 PM
..
131 Nick D // Jan 31, 2009 at 9:26 PM
Why aren’t Butt and Duff on that list.
2 washed up has beens on huge wages. They’d be my first to go along with Viduka, owen and smith.
132 Nick D // Jan 31, 2009 at 9:29 PM
