The transfer news is starting to roll in again, and hints this morning have been confirmed that Joe Kinnear has failed in his bid to sign Finnish international Sami Hyypia from Liverpool – because Liverpool will not let him go.
Sami Hyypia – out of contract this summer
Hyypia is out of contract at Liverpool in the summer, but the Anfield club were unwilling to let him join the St James’ Park club this month.
And that’s even after Sami had again been left out of the Champion’s League squad again this season, which we understand the Fin is not too happy about.
We don’t know if that means Newcastle can get him on a pre-contract agreement now, but it would be worth a try, and then he’ll arrive on a free transfer in the summer.
A good stop gap for a couple opf years, and he could assist Steven Taylor, Seb Bassong and others in their development. And he’s been playing surprisingly well for Liverpool this season too. Get him tied up Joe.
And Sami is still the best header of a ball in the Premier league, as he proved again at Newcastle in December.
Joe Kinnear told Sky Sports tonight:
“I have spent most of the last two days trying to get finance and players,”
“I will start working on finances and players right up until midnight and then tomorrow.”
“Fingers crossed we can get all four deals done. I tried for one centre-half, but got knocked back.”
“Liverpool weren’t prepared to let Hyypia out.”
“I want to get somebody with experience because of the position we are in.”
“We have a very young back four and I just want somebody who is a good organiser.”
Good thinking by Joe, and Hyypia would be more than good for Newcastle.
Four new signings sounds good, if that’s what he means, and that’s why he looked like he hadn’t slept in a week – he hasn’t. 😀
Good on you, Joe.
Four new signings? Maybe he means two in and two out, but we hope he means all four in.
Watch this space – it looks like it will be an exciting next 20 hours.
