England’s Premier League clubs have been granted a conditional extension to the transfer window deadline, the Premier League said in a statement on Monday.
Three hours before the 5:00 pm deadline today, the Premier League said that in view of the extreme weather conditions disrupting travel, the board would grant extensions to clubs sending an email confirming “that a deal has been agreed in principle.”
There is snow that is particularly heavy in London and The South East of England, and that has disrupted travel plans for players to get medicals and the like. Presumably if a deal has been agreed and the email is received by 5:00pm today the players can have their medicals once they can travel to their new clubs. If they fail their medicals then obviously the deal is off, as is usual.
Mike Foster, general secretary of the Premier League, told Sky Sports earlier today:
“It (the weather) is already having an effect in terms of making it difficult for players to get from one end of the country to the other,” .
“Even short journeys are difficult, especially in the South East. I know that because clubs have informed us of the problems they are encountering trying to get deals concluded.”
“We are currently trying to gauge the level of activity, how many transactions are in the pipeline.”
“It would be nice if would could simply extend the deadline by 24 or 48 hours, but it’s not a decision we can take alone.”
“We need to liaise with the FA, who in turn need to liaise with FIFA.”
“Those conversations have taken place and we are currently exploring the possibility.”
The winter transfer window has already been extended once, because January 31st fell on a Saturday, so it was extended to the Monday.
It has now been extended for a second time, providing that both clubs submit an email before 5:00pm agreeing to a deal in principle, with only the weather preventing them from completing the deal before the deadline.
We must say this seems a good step by the Premier League because they wouldn’t want to extend the deadline for every club, and this only affects those who do a deal today, but cannot get the medicals and the like completed, where the player has to be present.
That shouldn’t stop us knowing exactly who’ve we’ve signed by 5:00 pm either.
But expect Newcastle United to make a statement around 5:15pm saying who we’ve signed, if anybody. 😀
Comments welcome.

Apparently it was a threat seen by some Villa fans that they thought they would loose out. A possibility that Johnson and Sturridge were going to Newcastle as part of the Shay Given deal. No chance now as Man City have stated they want to hold on to their best young players. Shame!
