Newcastle Race Against Time To Sign Miguel Veloso

There is significant and persistent news this morning that Joe Kinnear, manager of Newcastle United is racing against time to sign 22 year-old Miguel Veloso from Sporting Lisbon, for a fee close to £11M.

Miguel Veloso – Newcastle target today?

That’s the good news, the bad news is the main report comes from The Sun.

But Joe Kinnear has already said he want s to bring in new faces to the club and worked until midnight last night in an attempt top line up players for today.

And Joe has even been quoted as saying Veloso is a target, which will certainly please Newcastle fans this morning, since we’ve been linked with this player for over a year now.

Speaking to reporters after the game against Sunderland, Kinnear said:

“He is definitely a realistic target.”

We know Bolton were in for the player but the fees banded about range from £8M on the low side to around £18M on the high side, but often these fees are lower than reported – we hope so anyway, because Newcastle have cash to spend given that Given has gone for an estimated £8M and The Zog should go today for around £6M.

But both clubs must agree a fee, and if that is possible, which we think is unlikely, Newcastle will try to get the deal done just as soon as possible today.

The Sun also estimates that a central defender is on the way for the Magpies, although no names were mentioned, but that seems like it could be true.

Joe last night said he wants more experience in defense, and his move for Sami Hyypia was blocked by Liverpool, although Sami was keen to come to Tyneside.

It remains to be seen if Joe goes after another experienced center-back now, or waits to get Sami on a free transfer in the summer, which he could get wrapped up right now. He’d be a great short-term signing for a couple of years for Newcastle.

Veloso can also play in central defense of course, but we would have thought that  Joe wanted Miguel in a more forward role at Newcastle.

Stay tuned.

Comments very welcome.

Get him. IF (and its a big one) we can get the lad then I think that will be the kind of signing to signal we are serious about being a Premiership team next season.

    …long shot?

    HEY ED!

Did you see the news on Sky Sports News?

David Craig said about us bidding 1.3m for Daniel Fox the Coventry LB

Also he had an email he said was from Mike Ashley, saying how he thought the coverage from sky was good, and he hoped to get the yellow ticker at bottom of page going later on.

Maybe do an article about it.

I doubt we will sign him. Bolton tried twice and they gave up after Sporting kept increasing their asking price. Something tells me they will only sell him for ridiculous amount of money.

But he would be a great signing, direct replacement for Butt!

Woohoo, Disaster recovery in London for me today!!!

But I was thinking, with the adverse weather conditions, how will this affect transfers today?

1.3 to get our LB issue resolved is a sound piece of business! How would you feel about a straight swap Enrique for Luis Garcia, guys? I don’t find much ground in this rumour, but it sounds interesting.

cant see any major signings being pulled of by the necastle managment team – deals take more than 24 hours to set up – unless of course its the newcastle fire sale – all players at incredible prices (i.e. Given 7.5 million)

My F5 key is already knackered. God I hope this day isn’t as frustrating for transfers as it has been so far for me.

I’m on a train outside Darlo, trying to get back to Toon from York. I was on the way to London for work, getting a 6.30am train – which I was unhappy about to start with. Then they said all the Londoners had given up moving because of a small spot of snow, and I shouldn’t bother trying to get there. So I got off the train, and got on another one coming back. That train has now been stopped for what seems like a year, with no explanation.

At this rate I’ll be home after 5 myself…

…at least I can check the web for news while I’m sitting here.

Kash@home – it’ll definitely bugger up last minute deals. Which is probably most of ours!
Is there a conditional rule that you can agree deals based on medicals taking place after the deadline? Or have I made that up?

Mcgeady and Saviola I’m hoping for, I know we’ll get niether, but if this guy is as god as they, bare in mind he plays in portugal, and did anyone see the freekick he scored, we need someone to be able to do that and grab goals from nowhere.

I’m not too sure about Veloso, Kinnear told the Journal that he was after a defnder and a striker plus taylor. He doesn’t mention a CM.

I think he would have been more of a target if we hadn’t signed Nolan
