It’s now been confirmed that Joe Kinnear will indeed need heart bypass surgery.
Joe Kinnear – will undergo heart bypass surgery this week
It’s now being reported by Sky Sports and the two local Newcastle papers, the Journal and the Evening Chronicle.
Sky Sports News understands the Irishman is set to undergo surgery this week, after he was taken ill on Saturday before the game at WBA, which Newcastle won 3-2.
Kinnear had hoped to make a return against Everton on 22nd February for Newcastle’s next league match, and had talked confidently of that on Monday and Tuesday, but that is not to be.
Kinnear will have to delay his return to the sidelines, and the Newcastle United club have said they will not be making any official statement in the near future, following reports earlier today, in the national media, about Joe’s condition.
It is expected that following his surgery this week, Joe Kinnear will be sidelined for about a month before making a possible return.
Here are the games Newcastle have coming up:
Sunday 22nd February Everton H
Sunday 1st March Bolton A
Wednesday 4th March Manchester United H
Saturday 14th March Hull City A
Saturday 21st March Arsenal H
Saturday 4th April Chelsea H
So it looks like Joe could miss at least the next 3 games and possibly be in charge of the Hull game on 14th March – that’s 4 weeks this Saturday – but that could also be very optimistic. Joe will immediately feel better after the operation, but of course he will be very sore for a week or two.
It’s surprising that the Newcastle club will not make an official statement on this, but perhaps they are delaying that until after the surgery has been completed.
We wish Joe the very best, and if Newcastle fans want to wish Joe well – he’s at Good Hope Hospital NHS Trust, Rectory Rd, Sutton Coldfield, B75 7RR.

Comment #84For those of you agitating for the club to make a statement about the situation, I’m sure Joe is still in shock hearing he needs to undergo life threatening surgery. I was a cardiac surgery nurse for a number of years and when a person find out suddenly that they need heart surgery it’s one of the most frightening experiences going, especially if it’s needed very quickly. The fact he hasn’t been let out of hospital yet is quite an indicator that it’s pretty serious so the last thing he needs to hear is that he hasn’t got a job. That can all wait a few days until after his surgery when hopefully he is on the road to recovery. Please have some patience. I’m sure there is stuff going on behind the scenes at SJP to deal with the situation. The last thing Joe needs is to pick up a newspaper tomorrow morning with everyone saying he’s about to be replaced after all the effort he’s put in. The fact it will probably happen is one thing but lets hope the next few days are as stress free as possible for him. He had 10 years pottering along quite happily – a few months at SJP and he needs heart surgery enough said!! Workyticket – sorry to hear about your mum

Comment #85Yes i thought JK got us back on the right track, he strikes me as an old school manager who knows how to build a team, whereas some of our other managers like Souness & Roeder (even though they were decent chaps) didnt know how to do this. Bobby Robson used to say he had 3 great teams whilst he was at Ipswich, and Alex Ferguson “Builds” teams, same with Wenger & O’Neill, I believe given time Joe would get us quite high in the league, maybe not to the heights we want to be at though, as in my opinion KK would have.

“worthyticket- i am sorry to hear that. My father also had one about 5 years ago and due to a nurses lack of care he to could have died. I would have thought the operation was much more routine nowdays.”
It depends on how many bypasses and who’s having the operation. Success rates are about 85 / 95 % but if you’ve been referred because of a myocardial infarction (heart attack), postinfarction angina or something like that, then the rates can be lower. Aspirin is very helpful.

Comment #87Cheers Joe, maybe we could send him a nice biro or sommin?
Once again we find ourselves in a mid-season manager hunt. Hopefully we go care-taker style with the view to a more permanent solution in the summer (Martinez, Bruce, Temuri, Terim).
If we stay up JK will be largely adored by the Toon faithful and this little health issue of his might be the best situ for all parties involved. We stay up, he lives (we don’t get eternal stick for killing a manager) and we get a great long term successor.
Ah…I can just feel the optimism returning.
@Grassy Knoll…could be a good shout, just I know little of the guy and less of his managerial/playing style.

Comment #94Well I for one wish JFK all the best and hope that his operation is a success, but I don’t want him back. He’s been good for us, but nobody should risk their health, or even their life for any job, especially if they have a family to consider.
My dad had a bypass op when he was 64 and it was fine (he’s 78 now) but he retired straight away.
I don’t know who should be next. Opinions are divided, understandably. Montagu mentioned Dechamps, but I’m fairly sure he wasn’t interested when we approached him before.
By the way, Sirjasontoon, there’s no point in telling people to rise above Bennytoon’s behaviour (comment 54, in which you say you will also be doing the same) and then rising to it yourself on at least five occasions (58, 62, 70, 73, 82). Tasteless jokes are part and parcel of our everyday life and none of those on Bennytoon’s link don’t refer to JFK’s current problem. I’m sure, unless you are bereft of any sense of humour, you have laughed at equally tasteless jokes on subjects that don’t affect you. Let it go mate. Life’s too short.
Westoon, you can’t expect people not to address a topic you dislike because you use the phrase “END OF” at the end of your post. That defeats that object of any debate. That’s what we’re all here for, irrespective of how different your understanding of debate is. Relax a bit. You’ll make yourself ill.
Bennytoon, you seem an intelligent and quite funny lad, and I appreciate that you don’t always start these arguments, but you must understand that to many of us, NUFC is something very important, and something to be passionate about. I don’t find you offensive or idiotic, but perhaps you could learn to draw the line a bit earlier, otherwise you go from making amusing observation (or sometimes just valid observation) to simple antagonism. I’m sure that’s not what you’re here for. By the way, Spurs suck as much as we do at the moment, and it’s only 40 years, not 50 since we last won a major trophy.

Depending the extent of the bypass I can see him being out for 2 months minimum! We need to move quickly if this is the case Hughton cant hack it as we saw post KK!

Comment #101Understand there`s a rift between the Chelsea owner and Peter Kenyon, an opportunity for Ashley to hire one of the country`s top football
brains and now that JK looks like he could be out of the game, an opportunity to go after a top class manager.
Success begins with good management, we shall see which way MA wants to go.
Personally I think he wants to do it on the cheap
lets see.

Thanks It Could Be Worse. It’s not about mee mutha though, that’s all done with. This club was completely paralysed when Joe came along, and no one apart from him had the balls to take it on. For his troubles, all he has got is insults, belittlement, and a ludicrous underestimation and mischaracterisation of his tactical skills. He has done a great job under the most trying circumstances imaginable, and he deserves the greatest respect.

On another note am I the only one not wanting Steve Bruce as manager? Isn’t he the one who…
resigned from Sheff Utd after one season in charge, was then sacked by Huddersfield, left wigan after 2 months, Palace after 3 months went to Bham where got promoted, relegated, promoted before joining Wigan?? Hardly a steadfast reputation – last thing we want is drama queen exiting when times are tough. So he’s a geordie – the above hardly qualifies him for this job except he’s used to a releagtion struggle with mediocre teams

people say kk is a quitter , all bruce seems to do is quit,,, as soon as another club offers him a chance hes away,
JK has not gone yet, but i dont think he will be back either, so the board should use this time wisley(sorry) and get the message out that we are looking for a quality young manager with a bit of experience or hiddink.
stay away from shearer9(cos i think he should he should start in the champioship first) def not vegtable

I said the last thing we want is a drama queen…. by the way, wasn’t it Steve Bruce who tried to take his team off the pitch during an FA cup match against Arsenal siting unsporting behaviour and caused the tie to be replayed? Slightly OTT??

Comment #109I’d like to wish Joe a speedy recovery from his op and hope he makes a full recovery
the chances of him back in toon are slim as i said on an earlier thread no job is worth a man’s life not even the toon job.
i do think we need to look at a new manager and i hope to god it’s not bruce
Ottmar Hitzfeld would be my prefered choice and he was intrested in the job before Souness

Comment #111Joe, get well soon bonny lad.
Take care of your health and rest-up for as long as it takes, as the Newcastle manager’s position is stressful and not for the faint hearted.
Not sure I like the idea of Houghton and Calderwood taking over and much prefer a Venables type person at the helm until we know what is happening with JFK long term.
