Are Newcastle Really After Juan Roman Riquelme?

There is news that Newcastle United are prepared to move in the summer to bring Argentine play-maker Juan Roman Riquelme to Newcastle United.

Juan Roman Riquelme – on loan next season?

There were rumors last summer that Newcastle were interested in Riquelme, so we don’t know if there is any truth in this story or it’s simply a regurgitation of a stale old story.

But Riquelme impressed during last summer’s Olympic Games, where he was one of Argentina’s three allowed over-age players, and he captained the side to victory.

Riquelme currently plays for Argentine Primera División side Boca Juniors, and in the Olympics he scored one goal against Brazil in the semi-final.

Riquelme was praised by journalists and players alike throughout last year’s Olympics, not only for his outstanding performances for his country, but also how professional he was, and he proved to be an excellent role model for the younger players.

That’s good to hear because we doubted whether Riquelme still had the passion to play top class football, after he left Villarreal two years ago.

The fact we have Argentine Internationals Gutierrez and Coloccini at the club should also help and the news is that Newcastle would like to get Riquelme on a one year loan deal next season.

The fee Boca Juniors want for the player is around £7M, but Newcastle are unlikely to want to pay that amount for a player who turns 31 in June.

Certainly one of the things missing form Newcastle is a creative midfield player, and 6′ tall Riquelme would be a big draw in England, but we hope the club is trying to make the deal now, before other clubs become interested.

Since we were supposed to be after an Italian and Argentine player on loan last month, and then nothing happened, we wonder if the Argentine was Riquelme.

Riquelme has played 54 times for Argentina with 18 goals.

So far he has scored six goals in 27 appearances for Boca Juniors this season, and he may be ready to try his hand in England.

Hopefully with Newcastle United.

What do you think about this?

    Hope not.

He’d be rubbish in the prem as he has 0 work rate and is one of the slowest midfielders going and I mean Geremi slowness.

    I doubt it.

Really is a great player but as it says in the article he’s 31 in June and doesn’t fall into line with the thinking in the boardroom.

Personally, I’d take him in a second especially when you consider how well our other 2 Argentinians have settled this year and he adds that extra bit of creativity in the middle of the park.

I know a couple of Wigan fans who appear certain that Bruce is on his way sooner rather than later!

Be nice to see him in black & white coz he’s still world class. The wigan press & forums are all a buzz of bruce comin here. Their saying if NUFC come calling they wont be able to keep him. I for one would be over the moon with this. Sadly your not likely to read it on this blog because i’ve come to the conclusion that Ed is anti-Bruce. All the little stories doing the rounds on web & in papers & Ed puts on a story about harper again? Sorry Ed love your blog but you need to take your kinnear & El Tel blinkers off!

But I’d take him on a 1 year loan deal, just to say that Riquelme played for us, just wouldn’t buy him for the reported £10mil.

No doubt that Wor Riqy has still got bags of quality! who know’s if he comes on loan Owen might sign his new deal? playing with a player who can slip him in for chance after chance could be very appealing.

We should be taking him because he is still a world class player even though he’s approaching 31. Did we question KK when he brought Beardsley back to us at 33/34.

The great thing about great players, especially creative players like Riquelme are that their speed of thought is never lost, nor is their ability to pick the perfect pass.

HAHAHA, I would like to but I am pretty sure that it is not possible..

But he would be a great player for us because we have enough hard working players.. such playmaker would be great.. His ball behind defense would be right for Martins…

The 8 Players I would go after this summer:

Tranquillo Barnetta – Him and Jonas on the wing would be perfect together both hard working skilful players. Barnetta also has the advantage that he is quick and he scores a few which we need.

Dean Whitehead – Perfect player who would complement our midfield perfectly. Never stopping workhorse a bit like Nicky Butt, but with the legs.

Giles Barnes – Very skilful versatile youngster who has only been kept back by injuries. And at a premier league club he could come on leaps and bounds.

Daniel Sturridge – Contract is up in the summer and he doesn’t want to stay at City. Powerful striker with loads of potential and him and Oba would complement each other well.

Miguel Veloso – Quality player which every team needs. Just a great midfielder.

Lisandro Lopez – 24 goals in 27 appearances for Porto last season speaks for itself and him and Oba as our top duo with Sturridge, Xisco and Ameobi as backup would be nice. He has tremendous pace, work rate and he is a cool finisher.

Nedum Onuhoa – Very versatile defender who can play anywhere across the back line and would challenge our current defence because atm they have a guaranteed spot in the team every week.

Maza Rodriguez – Experience CB who is just a very solid defender and him, Colo and Bassong who make our CB’s one of the best outside the top 4.

    beyethegreat makes my next point.

Shearer lost his pace with all the injuries but did we sell him on and put him out to pasture? NO.

You bring in pace around that player like Robson did. We actually already have it in certain areas of the team, Jonas, Martins, Owen (not like he used to be but he’s still got the speed of thought), even Duff.

Riquelme is maybe slow but he dont need it.. he can cover and hold the ball like anybody else.. and also his corner kicks and free kicks are so amazing..

No doubt he would be a great addition to the squard, but I dont think that he is going to be our player..

Everything said about Riquelme here is true. He’s a terrific player, and unbelievably slow. I still think he might succeed in the Premiership but for one thing.

He I suspect he wouldn’t succeed with the Toon because he’d lack the supporting cast that would render his lack of pace and work rate irrelevant. Where is the DM whose work rate would make up for his deficits? With Argentina, he’s got Mascherano. Who’ve we got, Butt? Or would we elevate the slowish Coloccini?

The Premiership is played at too high a pace to afford Riquelme, which is why he isn’t already here….

Wake up Tom Toon, little pace, but nobody can took him a ball.. so it is like that..

If Riquelme will be in NUFC, we could do something like Villarreal.. I think we can attack 4th position in the PL with him..

A few years back barcelona came to st. james park and beat us 2-0 in the champions league!

I watched riquelme play that night and went away knowing that i had winessed one of the finest footballer’s i was ever likely to see appear at st. james park! The lad never broke sweat, yet he was head and shoulders above everyone else on the field! He always had space, which is the sign of a great player!

Tom-toon & anyone else who might suggest that he is to slow to play in the prem really need to wake up! This fellow is a genius, he doesnt need to be quick or pacey to dominate games with his ability to find space, pass, create and score goals (i.e paul scholes)!

To suggest that we wouldnt want to take a player of this calibre is sheer ignorance! Because he wouldnt get in our team???????

C’mon lads…get a grip….We would welcome aplayer of this quality with open arms if there was even a hint of truth in it!
