There’s little doubt that Sebastien Bassong, signed for just £500K from Metz in the summer, has been the find of the season for Newcastle United.
Seb Bassong – find of the season for Newcastle
And there was news recently that Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger was interested in the player.
Not let’s think why would Arsene be interested? Well he’s French, he’s young and he’s good – reason enough no doubt for Arsenal interest.
And if we can get a few more signings like that in the summer, the squad will become even stronger and the good news is that maybe we will not be fighting relegation next season, and that would be a nice change from the last few years.
The French defender told The Sun today:
“No one knew my name when I first signed — all the fans were shouting ‘who is No 46?’”
“It was funny. The physio, everyone were laughing at me. But I guess people know me now and I am delighted.”
“It has been going well and it was nice to hear the manager say nice things about me.”
The French central defender was relegated with Metz last season, and then switched to Newcastle after a one week trial and an excellent first game at Doncaster Rovers on 26th July, where he looked Newcastle’s best player, and nobody knew who he was.
An in-form Everton side are visiting Newcastle tomorrow, and the Magpies are on 27 points, just four points off the drop zone — and 7 points out of 7th place – whichever way you would like to look at it.
“This is a different situation to Metz. Now I am at a bigger club and this is a new challenge. We got promotion and then got relegated. I was there for seven years.”
“I wanted to go grow up and coming to Newcastle has given that chance. It was a beautiful occasion when I signed.”
Bassong has been terrific for Newcastle this season, and for one so young he has handled the step-up in class wonderfully well. He has already appeared 23 times for Newcastle this season so far, and has been Newcastle’s best defender.
He already looks an accomplished defender, who is quick and good in the air, and the question with Sebastien is just how good can this youngster become?
If he keeps playing at the same level, he has to be knocking on the door of the full French side shortly, especially when a certain Jean-Alain Boumsong still seems to get into the French squad.
