Sebastien Bassong – Newcastle’s Find Of The Season

There’s little doubt that Sebastien Bassong, signed for just £500K from Metz in the summer, has been the find of the season for Newcastle United.

Seb Bassong – find of the season for Newcastle

And there was news recently that Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger was interested in the player.

Not let’s think why would Arsene be interested?  Well he’s French, he’s young and he’s good – reason enough no doubt for Arsenal interest.

And if we can get a few more signings like that in the summer, the squad will become even stronger and the good news is that maybe we will not be fighting relegation next season, and that would be a nice change from the last few years.

The French defender told The Sun today:

“No one knew my name when I first signed — all the fans were shouting ‘who is No 46?’”

“It was funny. The physio, everyone were laughing at me. But I guess people know me now and I am delighted.”

“It has been going well and it was nice to hear the manager say nice things about me.”

The French central defender was relegated with Metz last season, and then switched to Newcastle after a one week trial and an excellent first game at Doncaster Rovers on 26th July, where he looked Newcastle’s best player, and nobody knew who he was.

An in-form Everton side are visiting Newcastle tomorrow, and the Magpies are on 27 points, just four points off the drop zone — and 7 points out of 7th place – whichever way you would like to look at it.

Bassong added:

“This is a different situation to Metz. Now I am at a bigger club and this is a new challenge. We got promotion and then got relegated. I was there for seven years.”

“I wanted to go grow up and coming to Newcastle has given that chance. It was a beautiful occasion when I signed.”

Bassong has been terrific for Newcastle this season, and for one so young he has handled the step-up in class wonderfully well. He has already appeared 23 times for Newcastle this season so far, and has been Newcastle’s best defender.

He already looks an accomplished defender, who is quick  and good in the air, and the question with Sebastien is just how good can this youngster become?

If he keeps playing at the same level, he has to be knocking on the door of the full French side shortly, especially when a certain Jean-Alain Boumsong still seems to get into the French squad.

Comments welcome.

I like this fella, and we have not gotten such a good defender for ages. He is in fact better than Colo, but I have no confidence in him staying for long. He will soon leave this club like N’Zogbia and Bernard.

TBH he’s already earned his spot in Geordie folklore for taking out Sunderland’s entire front line at SJP like a one man defensive wrecking crew.

Did we seriously only pay 500K for him? I thought it was 2.2mil but if that is the case he has been the best buy of the 2008-09 premier league season for all clubs. but sadly it also shows how over priced Coloccini was.

Class act, if we can bring in one or two more like Bassong in the summer plus a crop of talented youngsters we should be in business next season.

Lad has done it consistantly over the full season….

to say this lad is the find of the season is a massive understatement….

The lad has come to a new country, with new challenges and looks like he has played here for the last 10 years….We can build a defence around this lad….he is that good…

Against S*nderland, he showed he has every quality required to be a top, top defender….

He had the pace to combat Cisse and the power to out do Jones….(that tackle wa, s immense when he put Jones on his arse 2nd half and really got the crowd going)

He reads the game like a dream, very very rarely gets caught out of position (if he does, he has the pace, like all top defenders, to recover) and his distribution has improved dramitically over the season…..

If we had paid 20 times what we paid for him in the summer, he would still be a bargain….

If we are to progress as a club, he will be integral…cannot praise the lad highly enough..

Loved the way he showed his authourity v WBA with Enrique…..

all the top defender, shout, cajole etc etc in order to get the very best out of the players around them….

Keane did it at Manure not Ferdinand does exactly the same….like it…..

Just to add a little meat to the bones re people being negative and saying he will leave…..

If we want to progress as a club then we wont let players like Bassong go…….

I am positive that we will progress over the next couple of seasons to make players realise that this is a great place to play their football….

If we all start thinking that just because he is a top talent, he will bugger off, then we may aswell pack up and support one of the so called big 4…..

Lets have a little faith eh

    totally agree punk skunk…..

I know we cannot sit here and say that every young un brought to the club is gonna work out but, along with Seb, we have brought some exciting young talent to the club in the last 18 month….

In 2/3 years time this could be our very exciting young side
    Krul (21/22)
    R.Taylor(26)Kadar(21)Bassong(23)Enrique(25)

    LuaLua(21)Barton(28)Nolan(28)Jonas(26/27)

    Ranger (19) Martins(25)

That, on paper is a young, hungry and pacey side…..I have left out
Harper,Beye, S Taylor, Tozer, Tavernier, Vuknic, Guthrie, Adjei, Xisco, Spear

and assumed Cacapa, Butt, Owen, Duff, Shola, Viduka, Smith, Owen and Geremi have all gone

Looking pretty decent….lots of ifs and buts though….

Not so much a “find” as a gift as Metz practically threw him into our lap. They must have been barking mad!

Bassong is the find of the season, without doubt. we have to hope that we don’t infect him with second-season syndrome though, as Milner and N’Zogbia and Jenas and so many other young players looked like class acts in their first season only to go off the rails thereafter.

when he was signed my co-worker said that he will come good because of one thing; Clairefontaine

with graduates like henry, saha, gallas, anelka and ben arfa, the pedigree is undeniable.

Apart from the time he got sent off and the 2nd goal against West Brom he has been a class act. Can you imagine our defense with out him now? We really would be in the relegation zone. This lad should be the first on the teamsheet for the next ten years.

Arsehole Wengerboys can admire from afar but thats all! It’s time we had some ambition and blocked the transfers of our best players. Anyway why would he want to leave for Arsenal, their not even a top 4 team any more IMO.
