Danny Guthrie Not Fit For Bolton Game Sunday

Some disappointing news today in that Danny Guthrie will not be fit enough to be part of the squad to play his former club Bolton Wanderers on Sunday.

Danny Guthrie – not available for Sunday at Bolton

With Kevin Nolan being sent off on Sunday against Everton and missing the next 3 games, and Joey Barton being out for at least another 4 weeks with his foot fracture, we were hoping that Danny might be able to play on Sunday, but that’s not to be.

The 21-year-old former Liverpool player suffered the injury during training in the build-up to last month’s league game against Manchester City at Eastlands. He injured his hamstring and the initial prognosis was the usual six weeks out.

Chris Hughton told nufcTV this morning:

“Sunday will come too soon for Danny.”

“But we are hopeful of having him back within the next couple of weeks.”

Guthrie signed for around £2M for Newcastle from Liverpool during the summer, and has made 20 starts and 2 goals, in what had been a very good first season for Danny on Tyneside. The lad looks a very promising midfielder who is still learning his trade on Tyneside.

When Danny was on loan at Bolton last season, he scored just once during 35 appearances, and 28 starts for the Lancashire side.

With Geremi out of favor at Newcastle it may be that Alan Smith will get his chance in midfield for Newcastle at The Reebok.

Alan made his very first appearance for Newcastle on Sunday, and he looked enthusiastic, and should be motivated to do well at Newcastle for the remainder of the season, if he wants to stay on Tyneside.

Not a big loss to be honest, as we’ll need Smith in midfield to batter some of the Bolton players!

I think Guthrie is a big loss. He is better than Butt who will be playing now. Hope he does batter some of them Bolton players but they have their own battering ram. Kevin Davies is more likely to batter our players than Smith is theirs.

If Colo marks Davies, then we’re in trouble!!!!

@Ed – I doubt Smith will be anything other than a mad chicken running around. His distribution is very poor!

Our defence should play exactly the same as how they did against Everton. Colo chasing everyone down and allowing no time when they get close to the box, with Bassong holding his position, cleaning up any loose balls and covering for Colo when he is out of position.

Bolton will not be playing through the midfield. They will be direct upto Davies, and looking for the 2nd ball. If we defend like we did last week, and we don’t win any 2nd balls, then we’re SCREWED!

Our defence and midfield have to start winning 2nd balls!

Personally I dont think Colo has been that poor….granted he hasnt been on fire but he has been doing a decent job….

think a few of us are comparing him to Bassong….who has been outstanding….Colo has been steady

Don’t get me wrong, Colo has been class I think. But he’s not an aerial dominator. He’s good at Marking and closing down, and he’s also good at sweeping up! His can’t dominate in the air. We need a dominating CB against Bolton, otherwise they’ll be favourites for the 2nd ball and they’ll punish us for it!

Centre midfield is looking very bare at the moment. Butt & Smith seem to be the only realistic options available.

Please don’t anyone try to kid themselves that the defence will be changed – It will be Enrique, Bassong, Colo & S Taylor – unless there are injuries. They are the best available at the moment.

Nobby_Long – Agreed! Centre Midfield has looked bare for about 5 years mate haha!

We’ve lacked a skillful attacking midfielder since Keiron Dyer passed away (What’s that you say? He’s alive somewhere in London!?)

Barton could probably play a Gerrard style role when fit as long as he hasn’t lost his ability in all this time off the pitch.

Good, he is a liability on the pitch anyway, rather have Butt, old legs and all !

“I think Guthrie is a big loss. He is better than Butt who will be playing now. ”

Ever seen a mackem in Milan, they’re different kinds of midfielders. Butt is our first choice in the holding role, and Guthrie is more of an attacker, so you can’t really compare them in that way.
