In a first half of few real chances, Bolton and Newcastle were still deadlocked at 0-0 at half time, inom their crucial game at The Reebok this afternoon.
This was a fairly even first half, with Newcastle having the better of the few chances the two sides had carved out.
The game started with Bolton immediately going on the offensive in this vital 6 pointer between two relegation candidates.
After 19 mins Bolton got through Newcastle’s strong back four but Swede Johan Elmander was unable to finish a good move. Johan hit the ball way over the cross bar from close range, with a decent chance, after Matt Taylor had delivered a good ball in from the right hand side.
Ryan Taylor was taking all the corners for Newcastle, and was doing another good job like last week, and after 33min another Ryan Taylor corner had Nigerian Oba Martins connecting well. But Oba was denied the opening goal by the fist of Finnish International Jaaskelainen right on the goal-line.
That was a good good chance and Newcastle almost opened the scoring.
Then on 41 minutes Newcastle broke quickly out of defense with Ameobi on the ball and the Magpies had a three-on-two situation. The ball eventually spun free to Argentine Jonas Gutierrez, who got the ball quickly to Oba Martins, who headed the ball wide, when it seemed so much easier to score.
That was a good chance for Newcastle and Martins should have done better.
But as the half came to an end the Newcastle defense, again looking strong, and with Ryan Taylor doing a more than decent job in the middle of the park.
The lads now need to push on for the all important win, in this crucial game.
On the evidence of the first half that’s now very possible.
Howay The Lads!!

Comment #50Every part of our play is poor. And even me, as a bedroom fan whos never going to be a manager, can see exactly what they are all doing wrong. So why cant the management.
We can do long balls. We need to pass pass pass and move, along the ground.
We cant cross today either and even then the strikers arent in the right place.
Defence is good, but dont just hoof it, play it out to feet.
Midfeild please learn to do some through balls. Have we had any today??? Always goes to the wing or over the top.
It is so so frustrating.

Comment #53Unbelievable, people still defending Ameobi. What a useless, ridiculous, piece of shite he is. I hope next time we play Wigan, he starts and Cattermole breaks his Effin leg. What a disgracefull player he is. Jonas pretty much the only good point of the day.

Comment #56We need a REAL manager now. If only Llambias and Ashley could see how serious the situation is right now.
We will be playing a full-strength Man Utd on Wed as they will probably be resting some key players for the League Cup. We need someone to lift the spirits of the players. We need to have a chance to win the game.

Comment #68i always try to stay positive but we are really in trouble now.
ameobi should not play again this season. play lovenkrads and martins up front with viduka. midfield of taylor, smith and jonas.
should have pushed on in that second half but they came out of the changing room looking completely clueless

Comment #76You can judge a team by the way they react and we just didnt.
All that guff about positive training ground and we gonna get 3 points and look to the future.
How many corners and not a single goal out of them?
Im fuming lads. We needed those 3 – especially with the smogs and blackburn winning.

Comment #79Thank you Mike Ashley. Thank you Keegan. Thank you Shepherd. Thank you Shola. Thank you Bramble, Boumsong and Luque.
You, among so many more have taken my beloved club from the brink of national and international fame and glory, slowly and irreversibly draining its spirit, pride, prestige and reputation with your ineptitude, greed or mismanagement, leaving us – the punters and worshippers at the great church of St. James Park – with nothing, dooming us to cult obscurity and pub quiz answers like Nottingham Forest or Leeds before us.
