It may take Oba Martins a little time to regain his sharpness in front of goal, that was missing in the first half yesterday, when he had a couple of chances but couldn’t put either of them away.
Oba Martins – vows to get some goals – soon
Oba Martins had made just one substitute appearance before being thrust back into the team – and with Michael Owen still missing through injury, the team needed some proven goalscorers in their ranks.
But Oba will take a little time to get back to his full sharpness, as he told the Shields Gazette today:
“I tried as hard as I possibly could to score, but it’s a little bit difficult when you come back,”
“I had a chance, but I missed it. I just have to continue to play my football.”
“The ball was a little bit slow for the second header, so I tried to jump and head it, but unfortunately I missed it.”
“For me, we didn’t play well at all. It’s not good at all, because we have to put maximum effort into our football.”
But Martins still seems confident he will add to his six goals over the coming weeks, as he recovers his fitness and sharpness and he went on:
“It’s been a long, long time, but I think I’m over my injury now.
“I’m happy I’m back with the team, and I hope to score a lot of goals before the end of the season.”
Unfortunately the truth is we need Oba in his top goalscoring form now, and when Michael Owen returns after the Manchester United game, we’ll need him in top form too.
The defeat yesterday was a rather sobering reminder to Newcastle fans, that we could well be relegated this season, as unlikely as that may seem.
