Edwin van der Sar Looking For Record Tonight At Newcastle

If  the 128-times-capped Dutchman, goalkeeper Edwin van der Sar, keeps a clean sheet tonight for another 89 minutes for Manchester United against Newcastle, he will beat the overall European record of 1,390 minutes for clean sheets, set by Dany Verlinden in the Belgian First Division in 1990-91.

Edwin van der Sar – 89 minutes to get the record

So we’ll have to make sure tonight that we score before then, just to mess things up a little.

One player who could do just that for us is our back in the side striker Oba Martins, who can put the ball in the net from almost anywhere.

Oba told the Newcastle Evening Chronicle today:

“I scored against them this season. I’m not the only one who’s going to play but it would be great to do it again.”

“I want to score the goals that will help Newcastle get out of this.”

Unfortunately Oba wasn’t as sharp as he could have been on Sunday at Bolton, and may take a little time to get back to his full sharpness, but we’re sure scoring tonight will be on his mind, every time he gets the ball.

Oba continued:

“It’s going to be difficult now because we lost at Bolton, and we have Man U in the next game.”

“We’ll see what’s going to happen. It will be tough but we have to stay together.”

This has been one of the worst seasons in living memory for Newcastle United, and it would be nice if we could really upset things, and actually even get a win tonight.

Joe Kinnear of course is recovering from his open heart surgery and will not be back for another 4 weeks at least, so until then Chris Hughton is the stand-in manager.

And Martins believes it is up to the players to haul the side out of danger, for the third season running, as the Nigerian striker continued:

“We have to play as a team.” “We’ll see what’s going to happen against Manchester United.”

“I will find it difficult, and so will the team.” “They’re a great team and have a lot of great players.”

“But we just have to go out there and do our thing and play our football.”

We’ll be keeping our fingers and toes crossed during the game tonight, and  certainly an Oba gaol will ignite the crowd and give the lads that much needed confidence.

Howay The Lads!!

Go Oba! It is you who has to score the goals tonight (since it seems likely that he will be partnered up front by Ameobi) !

  • Breaking the record is good enough for me 😉 But we need the win more 🙁

I hope we have the sense to play Viduka – if he can walk – play him.

I also hope we dont go out with the same game plan as we didnt have against Everton.

I like to see a good hard fought game but the Wimbledon style hatchet jobs were embarassing.

With todays refs you have to be careful – can we afford to have anyone else sent off and subsequently banned?

Lovenkrands is a welcome change but there’s nothing special about him. There’s a reason he was out of contract. In the same way Shola should be

At least stuff Van De Saar’s record

Man, what an easy way to break a record…

Only half chance we have is if we play Viduka and Martins upfront with Smith in a three pronged attack. And play with wing backs.

    Ryan Taylor———–Geremi————–Enrique

    ——-Jonas (free role)——–

Geremi protecting back four and spreading it wide….
Taylor and Enrique to push up on attack and either wip balls in for Smith and Viduka or feed Jonas…
And Smith to drop and defend on defence leaving 9 men behind the ball…
We’d still loose but hey, at least it’d give me some hope…

My grandad had a house and shop on Fawdon Lane (in Newcastle) years back, and he lived a few doors up in a massive house. He was always coming into the shop and having banter, and I got to know his son Daniel. We used to play out together. Really nice guy, for a footballer.

    I wonder if he’s a decent coach?!

Imagine coaching staff made up of former players?!
