Steven Taylor has revealed today that Colin Calderwood, the former Nottingham Forest manager, who seems to just love it at Newcastle, is already making a difference at Newcastle.
Colin Calderwood – coaching Newcastle defense
Steven has said that the way Colin has been coaching the Newcastle defense actually reflects the methods used by manager George Graham during the days of Arsenal’s legendary back four of Adams, Bould, Dixon and Winterburn in the late 1980s and early 1990s.
And Taylor is convinced Newcastle’s defending is becoming tighter as a result as Steven told the Newcastle Chronicle today:
“It’s been all about going back to basics. Colin Calderwood knows the game – he was a quality defender,” “You know what he’s saying is right. He’s been there and done that.”
“We’re playing a lot of 11-a-sides in training, with the defenders concentrating on keeping their shape.” “But, like Arsenal George Graham, the defense is also being worked separately every day.”
“It’s about sticking to your 18-yard box, learning that’s your zone as a center-half.” “It may sound boring, but it gets results – it builds a unit.”
“Adams, Bould, Dixon, Winterburn – they consistently played as a unit every day in training.” “That’s what I would love to happen here.”
“There always seem to be changes here.”
Joe Kinnear himself, has complained about never being able to field the same back four due to all the injuries, and it looks like Joe himself would love to stick to the same back four.
When Habib Beye comes back however, it may be hard for Steven to get his place, since he’s deputizing (and doing well) for Habib right now.
And one last thing – we owe Steven an apology because we blamed him for the second goal against Manchester United, while it was actually Ryan Taylor. There was some confusion initially about which Taylor it was.
Steven says he’s been taking the blame for that one, and his friend Ryan now owes him one.
But we wanted to put the record straight – better late than never – and we were wrong on that one.
Comments welcome.

Unfortunatley a lot of the damage has already been done.
Were in a position were we need to win half of our remaining 10 games.
Do you think we can do that?
We’ve not won one single game at home this year.
We’ve won only 2 games away all season.
We have to play Arsenal, Villa and Chelsea. I don’t think we can say with any confidence that we’ll get anything from these games so tht leaves us looking for 5 wins from 7 games.
I think we’ll go down.
I’m gutted but I don’t think form can change just like that!

I just can’t see Mike doing much with us in all honesty.
The game is more financial than ever now and the spending has been pretty poor considering how threadbare we have been for a long time.

Comment #43To my mind most quality teams play in pairs , 2 CBs, LB and LM, RB and RM, 2 CMs One more def one more attacking and obviously forwards,
Colo and Bassong can be quality given time, Enrique and Jonas have started to get a good rapport going, RM is a problem Beye needs someone decent to work with, could you imagine Beye with a Solano in front of him.
Our real weakness is CM even with everyone fit, Butt and Geremi are past it, Guthrie Barton and Nolan are the same player neither attacking/creative enough nor proper DMs. if we could sort out these weakness’s it wouldnt matter to a certain extent which combination of our current forwards were upfront (as long as Ameobi isnt in it).

Comment #44I felt this was the season we would go down we have flirted with relegation for a few seasons and law of averages says it would happen at some point.
The table does not tell lies and the run in of games is frightening.

Comment #45FWIW I think the club is still up for sale, weve just taken the for sale sign down, thats the main reason we are not being ambitious with either players or Management

Ashley hsn’t got the money to invest in the club to the extent needed. He never really did have but what’s happened in the last 6 months hasn’t helped his cause either!

Comment #50Ashley is gambling with the clubs future, the fan’s dreams and his own investment.
So far so bad but if we stay up this season it’ll all be better next ……. (tongue in cheek).
Bringing down the wages, strengthening the academy and a tight hold of the expenses of the club should put us in a good position for the future but we’ve been hit hard by injuries again this season and the first team’s struggled.
As for S Taylor, rightback seems to be a better position for him and I believe Colo and Bassong could form a solid cb partnership. Remember it’s their first season in the EPL for them both.

Calderwood is a long ball dinosaur who fits in well with Kinnear. Hopefully they’ll both be gone sooner rather than later.

I think a few teams around us will push on..we have had chances to push on but there is no hiding from the fact we don’t win enough games.

Comment #68think people are relying on us beating fulham ports and smoggys but them games are too late in the season the players will be bricking it by then thats why we need 4 points out the next 3 games m8

Comment #78Hey Beye, Mirandinha there’s a blast from the past. He was sort of like Martins, seriously powerful shot and would generally have a dig from anywhere, good in the air for such a small fella and scored against the top sides but was greedy as hell. Saying that he did have a decent strike rate considering the sh*te team he played in. Although he did dissapear during the winter period , a bit like Tony Yeboah used to. His wages were fairly astronomical at the time from what i remember too and we ended up going down in his last season amongst “sack the board” demonstrations, ironically not a lot has changed, high wages, board out, cr*p manager, poor squad etc. hopefully not relegation though.
