Mirandinha cost Newcastle £575K when he signed for the club back in 1987, and stayed a couple of years during which time he appeared 54 times for the Magpies and scored 20 goals, many of them spectacular efforts.
Mirandinha – while at Newcastle United
Recently, in a South American issue of FourFourTwo magazine, Brazilian Mirandinha talked about his time at Newcastle United, and how he would love to return one day to coach at the club.
“When I look back at my career, Newcastle was my best experience,”
“The fans even created a song for me: ‘We’ve got Mirandinha, he’s not from Argentina, he’s from Brazil, he’s f*cking brill’!”
But new manager Jim Smith wasn’t quite so impressed with the Brazilian, when he took over at Newcastle in 1988, and sent him back home – but a change in management saw Kevin Keegan try to bring him back to Newcastle.
Mirandinha continued:
“When Sir John Hall took over and brought in Kevin Keegan, I had the opportunity to return,”
“And then I made the biggest mistake of my life: I chose to stay in Brazil. How I regret that decision.”
Since then, Mirandinha has coached all over the world – and it seems, like many former players who get the passion at Newcastle, he would just love to come back to Tyneside to coach at the club:
He added:
“I have coached teams in Saudi Arabia and Malaysia, but my dream is to return to Newcastle.”
“When Bobby Robson was there, we almost closed a deal – I was going to be one of the youth team coaches.”
“I have a good relationship with Dennis Wise, so I’m working as a scout for Newcastle.”
“I’m confident that in the future we’ll work something out.”
The Newcastle club announced recently that Brazil would be a country where they would increase their scoring activities, and it’s great that Mirandinha is at least in the employment of Newcastle.
The 49 year-old may yet realize his dream and return to Newcastle, and it’s always good to have our former players, and local lads, come back to put something back into the club.
Mirandinha moved around a lot during his playing career, and played for 14 different clubs during his playing time from 1978 through 1995.
It would be just great to have Mirandinha back at Newcastle.

Comment #1Why not. I liked the way he played for NUFC even though he was not everybody’s cup of coffee (Brazilian). So what. We know we can trust KK’s ability to pick out good players and he wanted Mirandihna back. I think he could contribute something special to the coaching side of things. Do not see it happening as longs as Ashley is here.

Comment #4If we can get people involved with the club that have past links and a love for the place that is half the battle.
True passion.

Comment #5True. We need people who have connections with the club. We need passion injected at all levels and all directions. One day we could have the likes of Beardsley, Clark, Beresford, Rob Lee, Barton, Shearer etc involved in various capacities from scouting, the Academy, the reserves, coaching and managing the first team. Not a miracle. Not an Ashley plan either unfortunately. Why not Mirandihna too. And lets be honest Roeder did his best work with the juniors.

Comment #6My memory might be playing games, but wasn’t he another “Big Hair” player. Also a big fee for the time. He was a hit with the fans but obviously not with the management!

I remember all of the lads at school fighting each other as to who was going to play as Mirandinha – I always ended up playing as Kenny f**kin’ Wharton!
