There were lots of reports yesterday indicating that Newcastle United were interested in Spurs 22 year-old midfielder Tom Huddlestone, who is an England Under-21 International, and is also more than useful in central defense.
Tom Huddlestone – Newcastle seem interested
Former Spurs coach and Newcastle assistant manager Chris Hughton has already recommended Tom to Joe Kinnear, and it looks like Newcastle tried to sign the former Derby star in January on loan, though the end of the season.
Tottenham manager Harry Redknapp rejected Newcastle’s approach, probably becasue he still has his own relegation worries, but Newcastle may well be back again in the summer for Huddlestone, as long as the club can stay in the Premier League.
The news is that Kevin Nolan was signed after Spurs rejected Newcastle’s approach, so that probably all happened following our 2-1 defeat at Man City, when we lost Joey Barton to injury again.
Huddlestone is a good player, but doesn’t seem to have much pace, but he combats that with his considerable skill on the ball. And of course he is more than decent in central defense too, and that is another plus for the youngster, from Newcastle’s viewpoint.
Tom is not happy that he spends so much time on the bench at Spurs, and he will likely want to move on in the summer, but there will be a number of clubs interested in the talented youngster.
Hughton of course worked with Huddlestone at Tottenham during Martin Jol’s management reign there from 2004 until 2007, and Chris believes Tom is an excellent player and could do a job at Newcastle.
But we wouldn’t mind one little bit if Newcastle end up signing Huddlestone, since he’s without doubt a good young player and could do very well on Tyneside.
Tom played 88 times for Derby County before signing for Spurs for £3M in 2005, and has so far played about 70 times for the London side with 4 goals.
He has played 30 times with 4 goals for the England Under-21 side, and will likely partner captain Steven Taylor in the upcoming Under-21 European Championships this summer in Sweden.
Comments very welcome.

Comment #83Benny you will buy big names…but non of these big names ever live upto the fee you pay…that is my point.
The list of expensive crap that has failed to live upto expectations grows every window.

Comment #84sirjasontoon- I thought they came because outside the top 4 we are the most successful but maybe they just come to ride the london eye. who knows. As long as you are pleased with your clubs signings and realise it will take years before you even challenge for a place in the inter toto.

Comment #87Benny we have alot of work to do at Newcastle,I admit that we are in a struggle at the club.
Spurs on the other hand have spent fortunes in recent years and have very little to show for it..yes it may sell shirts with names on but are these big stars really that bothered about your club?
Judging by the way they are applying themselves this season you would maybe beginning to question the commitment of players like Bentley Etc they don’t give two hoots about your club or it’s history in my Humble opinion.

Comment #92…banter aside, WTF do we want with another defensive central midfielder (Huddlestone)? Haven’t we already got 137 of them? Playmaker my @rse.
…btw, I see the word ‘Spurs’ in the headline has attracted our friend. Like flies ’round shit.

Comment #97TT, I just think Butt, Guthrie, Nolan, Barton, Smith, (Huddlestone) are all very similar – as in none of them are too likely to get goals or play a major part in creating any. I generally seem there to bolster the midfield.
…just didn’t think he was the type of player we should be looking at. Mind you, we probably weren’t anyway.

Comment #107Because of this convo my hatrid for spurs has grown so i have decided to make a joke up off the top of my head 😉
my teacher told me to go away and ask my family 5 words to describe SPURS and then look at the first letter of each word
i went to ask my family they said
Dad- Sh*t
Mum- Poop
Sister- Ugly
Bro- Ret*rds
Gran- SuperDuper
I went back and told her the answers and she immediately said well done Turkish Mag, 4 right
i said which 1’s wrong?
she said the last 1
i said oh why?
because thats the complete opposite to what spurs are
i said, oh i know maybe my Gran didnt hear the question i’ll ask her tomorrow
so i went back and asked her again she said “oh that was what i said but you left before i finished i was going to say SuperDuper…….Scumbags
5 out of 5 😉

He is only one of the best midfielders in the game , with his hard tackling, playmaking style.
Guaranteed to move to the PL this summer, but wont come cheap.
Exactly the type of player we lack.
Either he, Mbia, Sissoko, Moutinho, even Appiah would improve this team enormously, but it aint gonna happen only a repeat of the bargain basement buys and there aint too many Bassongs left out there.
Hate to say it but think Ashleys ignorance and poor choice of people to run the club has resulted in a gamble that has failed and relegation is around the corner.
Stupid! Stupid! Stupid !

Comment #110I am a Portugal fan (would say I was Portuguese but it would be a lie, I am only half Portuguese).
Veloso is not a hard tackler at all, he a marking dm with decent long passing, he really isn’t that good. Raul Meireles over him anyday.
