News this morning that when Nicky Butt was about to leave Newcastle, back in the summer of 2006, his Dad had a talk to him, and told him something worldly-wise.

Nicky Butt – inherited his guts from his Dad
Nicky Butt has revealed that it was his Dad who convinced him to stick with Newcastle United, after a loan spell at Birmingham City.
Nicky said today:
“He’s my hardest critic,” “But when it looked like I might be leaving Newcastle, he said to me: ‘You know you’re better than what you’re showing, better than the players taking your place.”
“You have to be a man and show them.”
“He said: ‘It’s easy to walk away when people are slagging you off – but there’s a choice. You can show them how good you are and stick two fingers up to your critics.”
There’s not much to add to that other then to say to Nick’s Dad – good for you!
Maybe we can get Nick’s Dad to come in and talk to the Newcastle players before the Chelsea game.
We may even have a chance of winning if that happens, because we certainly need some of out players to stand up and be men.
Comments welcome.

good words, apart from the “You know you’re better than what you’re showing, better than the players taking your place.”
because quite simply, he wasnt then, and isnt now.
then he was dropped in favour of i think scott parker, and now in favour of barton when the first team is selected, i know who id prefer.

Nicky Butt was not good enough 4 years ago when Souness let him go out on loan. So why the F!!! is he still here?!!!
I truely hope some club pick him up in the summer, I’m sick and tired of watching our midfield be overrun because of the slow legs of Butt.
His dad was clever yes, he probably knew that Newcastle was the only club willing to pay crazy money for such a poor player.
5 neeraj // Mar 29, 2009 at 4:07 PM
may not be the best player, or any good…..
but he is the only leader in the team, and gives his 100 perc on the pitch, unlike others who only like to talk big, but disappeaar as soon as the match start…..

Jan, he was a crucial player for us last season, arguably our best. He has also been important this season too, so what is your problem with him? Do you actually understand what holding midfielders do?
9 workyticket // Mar 29, 2009 at 4:29 PM
You too ‘always geordie’. Perhaps you could tell us which of our youngsters could take his place as a defensive midfielder? And why?

i live next door to the pub that nicky butts father drinks in day in and day out, absoute piss head, wise words from the bottle, its a job.
Nicky butt is to old, to slow and has nothing to bring to newcastle. its a fact, he hasnt really done anything for us and since he joined weve litrally gone from worst to worst.
this makes me laugh…..

“A Very Wise Man” indeed!
….for persuading his son to earn money hand-over-fist at probably the only club in England willing (stupid enough) to pay him for “taking it a bit easy today”.
Sorry Worky, but when you say he’s “arguably our best player” I think the key word is “arguably”. Even if he was he’d probably be “worst player” at a club less sh1te.
Man. Things really are heating up now. I can only imagine what this forum is gona be like in a month
…and yeah, we don’t have too many options for holding mid, but I’d argue that a centre of Guthrie and Nolan (or Barton) would be more effective than Butt and a playmaker.
Anyway, NB is still an NUFC player and if he can help kick some half-ass in the changing room then it has to be a plus.
ONWARDS AND UPWARDS!

Though I may respecfully differ with you about some of his performances this season Beye, I am just sick to death of the dismissive and negative revisionism of boo boys like Jan. They are dragging this club down and making us hated.

18 Rodzilla // Mar 29, 2009 at 5:43 PM
…worky, granted, you said last season, sorry, I’ll admit he was pivotal then, I would argue however that Given was our best player by far last season. I firmly believe he is the sole reason we are still in the Premiership.
Back to the subject of Butt, it’s a real shame that one of our best players can’t hit a cow’s arse with a banjo though (and I know that’s not what he’s there for).
We seem to have gone from goal turnaround specialists to draw specialists to can’t even score specialists in the last 3 years.
I whole-heartedly agree with your “dismissive and negative revisionism of boo boys” comment though. NUFC seem to have gone from everyone’s 2nd favourite club to ‘a club full of unrealistically over ambitious fans taht deserves to go down’. I find it quite upsetting how we’ve turned from being loved and respected to ridiculed and in some cases hated.
Bottom line is we’re straight up, passionate Geordies, and we can’t keep our gobs shut. By our very nature we highlight everything to all – good or bad. How the tabloids would miss NUFC….
…anyway, I’m waffling now.

It doesn’t matter whether it’s about someone I agree, or disagree with; it’s wrong. People should be fair and evenhanded whoever they are dealing with.

Sure I know, I even used to play that role myself. Do you seriously think Nicky Butt was the best player Toon had last season?! Better than Beye, Given, Martins, Owen etc?
Any player picked week in and week out is important for a team, Butt is important because he’s picked, not because he’s a good player.
He’s far too slow, his distribution is poor and he is giving away way too many freekicks (and pens). If you are happy with players like Butt in the Newcastle XI, you are also happy with CCC next season, Workyticket.

Jan Stavik-
Argueably Butt wasn’t the best player last season
but what he gives to the team is amazing sometimes
He brings leadership, guts, passion, skill always gives 110% and much more to the team, however receives no credit from anyone for it.
Why is Butt constantly picked with all managers; even with Barton Guthrie and Nolan fit? Why do the coaching staff never once doubt him and say he was dissapointing ?
Players like Nicky Butt, Kevin Nolan, Steve Harper Will keep this team up.
You saw what nearly happened in 2006 after people were constantly saying how bad he was and even our own fans!
I for one think Butt is still a great player and cant imagine what we’d of missed out on.
I played football today for my local Turkish team, we’re top of the league yet we drew against bottom of the league. We were also 3-0 up at half time, our players thought it’s in the bag and gave up, I noticed on the opposing team there was 1, just 1 player trying at all, he was giving all he had for this team and went on a wonder run to score. Others saw that if HE CAN DO IT THEY CAN TO! I think Butt gives that sometimes and has shown it numerous times over his career.
Butt gives minor things to the team, but this team would of crumbled without him. (they wont now thanks to Nolan I hope)

If we stay up and the smoggies go down, why dont we go for Downing or Tuncay would fit perfectly into our team, and because they would be relegated we could get both for about
Downing- 10mil
Tuncay- 7mil

turish magpie and worky totally agree with you……
the point is thta def mid role is a bit dicey, either you would blow your opponents away or you would end up giving stupid free kicks…….
unfortunately for butt the latter one has happened too often this season……
he is not a player for week in and week out….. he should be thrown when we are defending a lead in 2nd half…..
and jan why he is picked regularly….
refer to stoke game we lost a 2 goal lead in second half after dominating the first, the only problem was there was no one shouting, talking to players which is important…….

A back 4 of: Hughes-Bramble–O’brien–Bernard
A midfield of: Solano–Dyer–Speen–Robert
A forward line of: Shearer–Bellamy
I would say Beye better than Hughes, Colo better than Bramble, Bass better than O’Brien and Martins/Owen better than Bellamy and thats probably it, if i actually think about it the midfield along with shearer were far better, Solano and Robert got about 15assists a season and about 10 goals between them from midfield along with Speed knocking a few in, and also Shearer, Solano and Robert scored about 10 free kicks between them, and our team now hasnt really got any creative and goalscoring midfielders and we also havnt got a good free kick taker, sorry about the comment before, just the first thing that came into my mind

“You could say that, but imo if you havnt got good manager the players play worse, the differene between our team now and the one 6 years ago is BOBBY ROBSON
<<< are you haveing a laugh this team we gat now wasent a patch on that team”
You’re both half right there. Bobby Robson was a great manager, and a great figurehead for the club, but he did have a better squad too. Alot of this was due to Allardyce though. His purchases were pretty awful from both a playing, and a financial point of view.

bobbys over all team was a lot better than this team and obbiously bobby is one one our best managers ever and ive been saying we have no attcking midfielders for ages m8 oh and we had a better keeper then think his name was shay

“oh and we had a better keeper then think his name was shay”
Is it me but in matches doesnt he seem to save shot after shot after shot, but when Harpers in goal not nearly half the amount of shots come at him, i guess Harper organises the defence better
101 workyticket // Mar 29, 2009 at 10:03 PM
Solano and Shearer are the ones we miss the most IMO batty. The only time I ever lost my way with good old Sir Bobby was when he fell out with wor Nobby over Peru, and his trumpet!

They may not be Shearer and Solano batty, but at least they’re not all ‘ringers’ who are constantly languishing on the treatment table for £40/50/60,000 a week.

“TF worky i dont know aboot you but i cant see where the crosses are gona come from for us to score goals to win the games can you”
Players like Solano, Rob Lee and others really spoiled us with their passing, but I think the current players are very nervous and snatching at their passing, and their finishing too. On the pitch this is quite obvious, but the causes of it are more contentious, and the cause of many of our arguments on here!

Stating Butt was one of our best players last season is deluded following if anything… He is ok, sure… He has tactical awareness and he can break up play, but on the other hand he has no legs and at times he makes mistakes that schoolboys would be ashamed off… Supporting your team is one thing, and i agree that when we’re in the stands thats what they need from us. But refusing to accept the level of their performances isnt good enough and blindly sticking up for them on debate blogs like this has nothing to do with support… thats delusion

worky… I simply dont agree, but then again, we cant agree on everything. As i say he is ok, but not as great as you state, if we talk playing ability only (Leadership and profetionalism are top notch)… If he played like he did against spurs away last season all the time it would be a different story.
131 valle // Mar 29, 2009 at 11:51 PM
On another note i dont think relegation would be the doom that some fans makes it out to be (i would have trouble following the team from Denmark so i would cry salty tears for months tho).
The parachute payments are said to be 30 million.
The clubs high earners would be farmed out leaving us with a bit of money and a much more healthy wage bill that could see us plan for the future and manage our income much more wisely.
The players going out would leave room for some of our excelent youngsters like Carroll, Lua Lua, Vuckic, Kadar and others who might not cut in in the EPL yet but would be great in 1st division. Giving us a stronger team and funds for rebuilding when we hopefully shoot straight back into the EPL.
Im not saying relegation is cut in stone yet, and ofcourse staying in the EPL would be better. Im just stating the positives we could take out of it.
132 bobby_ollox // Mar 30, 2009 at 8:23 AM
Relegation is far from certain yet. We have good opportunity for 9 more points this season which would be enough.
It took an exceptional manager to “win something with kids ” ( and an exceptional crop of players). No-one should think we could emulate Fergie and Man U under our current regime. By all means blood one or two youngsters into the team, but sweeping out the current team en masse in place of kids would be suicide.
The first team, including Nicky Butt is , very capable of avoiding relegation – but the management team are woefully inadequate. The team need leadership and motivation, pick their heads up and go and get these points.
Since a managerial change is now unlkely, our only hope is that the experienced professionals pick up a couple of results in the next couple of games which get them going and give them enough impetus to see out the season. I would rather have NB in that team than counting cash on the sidelines.

Butt is aveteran in a very poor team right now. We should be wary of calling for his head like we did Gary Speed’s with all those knowing ‘his legs are gone’ rubbish comments. He goes on to star for Bolton for another 3 years and he’s still playing!
We need Butt – he should be captain instead of the non-committal Owen – and he’s been one of our better performers and NEVER hides.
