News this morning that when Nicky Butt was about to leave Newcastle, back in the summer of 2006, his Dad had a talk to him, and told him something worldly-wise.
Nicky Butt – inherited his guts from his Dad
Nicky Butt has revealed that it was his Dad who convinced him to stick with Newcastle United, after a loan spell at Birmingham City.
Nicky said today:
“He’s my hardest critic,” “But when it looked like I might be leaving Newcastle, he said to me: ‘You know you’re better than what you’re showing, better than the players taking your place.”
“You have to be a man and show them.”
“He said: ‘It’s easy to walk away when people are slagging you off – but there’s a choice. You can show them how good you are and stick two fingers up to your critics.”
There’s not much to add to that other then to say to Nick’s Dad – good for you!
Maybe we can get Nick’s Dad to come in and talk to the Newcastle players before the Chelsea game.
We may even have a chance of winning if that happens, because we certainly need some of out players to stand up and be men.
Comments welcome.

Comment #1good words, apart from the “You know you’re better than what you’re showing, better than the players taking your place.”
because quite simply, he wasnt then, and isnt now.
then he was dropped in favour of i think scott parker, and now in favour of barton when the first team is selected, i know who id prefer.

Comment #4Nicky Butt was not good enough 4 years ago when Souness let him go out on loan. So why the F!!! is he still here?!!!
I truely hope some club pick him up in the summer, I’m sick and tired of watching our midfield be overrun because of the slow legs of Butt.
His dad was clever yes, he probably knew that Newcastle was the only club willing to pay crazy money for such a poor player.

Comment #5may not be the best player, or any good…..
but he is the only leader in the team, and gives his 100 perc on the pitch, unlike others who only like to talk big, but disappeaar as soon as the match start…..

Jan, he was a crucial player for us last season, arguably our best. He has also been important this season too, so what is your problem with him? Do you actually understand what holding midfielders do?

Nicky butt is to old, to slow and has nothing to bring to newcastle. its a fact, he hasnt really done anything for us and since he joined weve litrally gone from worst to worst.

Comment #12“A Very Wise Man” indeed!
….for persuading his son to earn money hand-over-fist at probably the only club in England willing (stupid enough) to pay him for “taking it a bit easy today”.
Sorry Worky, but when you say he’s “arguably our best player” I think the key word is “arguably”. Even if he was he’d probably be “worst player” at a club less sh1te.
Man. Things really are heating up now. I can only imagine what this forum is gona be like in a month 😀
…and yeah, we don’t have too many options for holding mid, but I’d argue that a centre of Guthrie and Nolan (or Barton) would be more effective than Butt and a playmaker.
Anyway, NB is still an NUFC player and if he can help kick some half-ass in the changing room then it has to be a plus.
ONWARDS AND UPWARDS!

Though I may respecfully differ with you about some of his performances this season Beye, I am just sick to death of the dismissive and negative revisionism of boo boys like Jan. They are dragging this club down and making us hated.

Comment #18…worky, granted, you said last season, sorry, I’ll admit he was pivotal then, I would argue however that Given was our best player by far last season. I firmly believe he is the sole reason we are still in the Premiership.
Back to the subject of Butt, it’s a real shame that one of our best players can’t hit a cow’s arse with a banjo though (and I know that’s not what he’s there for).
We seem to have gone from goal turnaround specialists to draw specialists to can’t even score specialists in the last 3 years.
I whole-heartedly agree with your “dismissive and negative revisionism of boo boys” comment though. NUFC seem to have gone from everyone’s 2nd favourite club to ‘a club full of unrealistically over ambitious fans taht deserves to go down’. I find it quite upsetting how we’ve turned from being loved and respected to ridiculed and in some cases hated.
Bottom line is we’re straight up, passionate Geordies, and we can’t keep our gobs shut. By our very nature we highlight everything to all – good or bad. How the tabloids would miss NUFC….
…anyway, I’m waffling now.

As I’ve wrote before (to hitman I think?). I’m not on any ‘side’ apart from the club’s. I just don’t like lies, hypocrisy and blatant unfairness on either side. It doesn’t matter whether it’s about someone I agree, or disagree with; it’s wrong. People should be fair and evenhanded whoever they are dealing with.

Sure I know, I even used to play that role myself. Do you seriously think Nicky Butt was the best player Toon had last season?! Better than Beye, Given, Martins, Owen etc?
Any player picked week in and week out is important for a team, Butt is important because he’s picked, not because he’s a good player.
He’s far too slow, his distribution is poor and he is giving away way too many freekicks (and pens). If you are happy with players like Butt in the Newcastle XI, you are also happy with CCC next season, Workyticket.

Argueably Butt wasn’t the best player last season
but what he gives to the team is amazing sometimes
He brings leadership, guts, passion, skill always gives 110% and much more to the team, however receives no credit from anyone for it.
Why is Butt constantly picked with all managers; even with Barton Guthrie and Nolan fit? Why do the coaching staff never once doubt him and say he was dissapointing ?
Players like Nicky Butt, Kevin Nolan, Steve Harper Will keep this team up.
You saw what nearly happened in 2006 after people were constantly saying how bad he was and even our own fans!
I for one think Butt is still a great player and cant imagine what we’d of missed out on.
I played football today for my local Turkish team, we’re top of the league yet we drew against bottom of the league. We were also 3-0 up at half time, our players thought it’s in the bag and gave up, I noticed on the opposing team there was 1, just 1 player trying at all, he was giving all he had for this team and went on a wonder run to score. Others saw that if HE CAN DO IT THEY CAN TO! I think Butt gives that sometimes and has shown it numerous times over his career.
Butt gives minor things to the team, but this team would of crumbled without him. (they wont now thanks to Nolan I hope)

How can you put Given in that list, even though he only played 13 games are something last season , all of his proformances were terrible, and a lot of people on here thought that he had lost his touch. But of course throughout this season we were wrong because he was fantastic.

Comment #35turish magpie and worky totally agree with you……
the point is thta def mid role is a bit dicey, either you would blow your opponents away or you would end up giving stupid free kicks…….
unfortunately for butt the latter one has happened too often this season……
he is not a player for week in and week out….. he should be thrown when we are defending a lead in 2nd half…..
and jan why he is picked regularly….
refer to stoke game we lost a 2 goal lead in second half after dominating the first, the only problem was there was no one shouting, talking to players which is important…….
