Geremi And Martins Both Play Saturday – And No Injuries

The Internationals will be in full motion this week, and there was some that took place last Saturday, so let’s hope we don’t have any more Newcastle players return injured to St. James’ Park, like Damien Duff did late last week.

Jonas Gutiierrez – played 90 minutes in Argentina 4-0 win over Venezuela

And it seems like it was a rather a mixed weekend of results for Newcastle players representing their countries.

Jonas Gutierrez again played the full match for Argentina in their good 4-0 win over Venezuela in Buenos Aries, and that victory took Argentina to second in the South American World Cup qualifying section. Next up is a trip to Bolivia on Tuesday. Fabricio Colocinni failed to make the squad this time around.

Geremi was in action for Cameroon, but they were beaten 1-0 by Togo and Oba Martins was again back in the Nigeria team, and played the full 90 minutes, but they were held to a 0-0 draw in Mozambique. That’s it for both Martins and Geremi, so they will both come back safe and well to Newcastle and prepare for the vital game at home to Chelsea this Saturday.

16 year-old midfielder Haris Vuckic played for the Slovenia Under-17 team, but they were eliminated from the European Championship finals, following successive 2-0 defeats to Poland and Greece in the Elite Qualifying Round. Slovenia are due to meet  Switzerland this Tuesday.

Here’s a round-up of how the Newcastle players have fared during the international break – taken off the Newcastle United official web-site.

Jonas Guttierez – another 90 minutes for Argentina, but considered not good enough for NUFC starting XI v Arsenal by Hughton & Calderwood !!!!!!!!!

Maradona obviously does not have a clue what he’s doing !!!!

I agree with both of you…I think this is also important for those saying Jonas isn’t good enough to play for us!

He’s by no means perfect, but if he’s playing 90 minutes for one of the best international teams around he can’t be too shabby – no-one (possibly excluding Bassong) has looked really good this season and NO-ONE has had a faultless season! I still maintain Gutierrez is one of the best buys we’ve made in years and easily one of my favourite players in the current squad!

Ed, Jonas should start regardless. Just need to find a way to get the forwards to play off him – Argentina obviously can do it……..& ours are infinitely more superior to theirs…

Jonas has been about the only player to get me off my seat this season – final ball has been a problem, but its as much about the forwards movement & working with him as it is poor delivery.

Working with him is the key. He can beat people….not many others can.

Nobby Long, I’ve been saying that for a while, he can let himself down at times but we can’t really blame him for lack of striking targets to aim for – let’s not forget he’s spent half the season trying to find Bambi!

well documented how can hughton and calderwood not think that he should start for us. jonas must have been scratching his head at that one.
pity geremi didn’t pick up an injury would have helped me get to sleep

its realy sad when you know deep down that the toon will be playing championship football next season and it makes me fèel like pulling my hair out knowing that theres a chance if a decent manager in charge that we could beat the drop so ashley will never be able to run this club imo if he cant see the problem with hughton when every fan can see hes going to take us down

Chuck totally agree with you about the team. At the moment best replacements for S.Taylor and Barton are Colo and Guthrie.

Isn’t Guthrie back? Our best line-up at the moment then:
    Beye — Colo–Bassong–Enrique
