Steve Harper Massive Player For Newcastle – Hughton

8:07 pm, Monday, March 30th, 2009 by Dr. Ed Harrison · 14 Comments

There were reports yesterday that Newcastle are interested in Celtic and Poland goalkeeper Artur Boruc, and the fee was quoted at £4m.

Steve Harper – very safe and reliable goalkeeper

But why Newcastle would be interested in signing Boruc, when we have a good goalkeeper in local lad Steve Harper, is beyond us.

But it seems the gossip press are determined that Newcastle should get another goalkeeper to replace the departed Shay Given, and no doubt we will linked with most goalkeepers under the sun during the summer. But we don’t need anybody else at the club with Steve and young guns Tim Krul and Fraser Forster.

And only today Newcastle caretaker manager Chris Hughton has underlined the importance of Steve Harper in Newcastle United’s survival run-in to the Premier League.

Hughton told the Newcastle Evening Chronicle today:

“Steve is massive, not only because of the position he plays.” “But he is also the longest-serving player here.”

“For the Manchester United game, he was captain, so that shows how he is looked upon at this club.” “And he is vitally important because of his position and the person he is.”

“In this period of time, he is quite a calm individual and is a soothing influence.” “Vocally, you want him to be on top of players.”

“But he has also got to be one who can calm situations and alleviate a little bit of pressure on the back four and the team.”

We’ve noticed how Steve does have a tendency to calm things down when he gets the ball and that’s good, because there’s nothing like having confidence in your goalkeeper.

Harper pulled off a series of fine saves after Arsenal had scored their 3rd goal, in our 3-1 defeat against Arsenal, and if truth be told that defeat could have lo0oked a lot worse but for Steve Harper in the last 20 minutes.

With Steve being  a local lad, born in Easington in 1975, he knows all about what it means for Newcastle to stay in the Premier League.  And just like he was outstanding last year at this time, we expect Steve to again come through big time for Newcastle, in the final eight games of the season.

All we need is for the other 10 players to have the same dedication, and we’ll be fine – hopefully. 😀

Comments welcome.

we dont need another keeper, the one we is good enough and has been under study to one of the greats for a long time, now its his time to shine, patience has stood him in good stead and surely soon he may be looked at by capello for the national side. i really think he is good enough, really cant understand why the press have to contrive stories like this , is it to try to undermine our keeper and our players???

Smiley-I would look out for a Dire 1st Team,Toothless relegation bound Foot/Goofball and a massive defeat…look at it as a comedy puppet show assembled by Mike Ashley…Humm the Steptoe theme.
